Abstract

A method of verifying of a mobile subscriber station that is in an idle-mode includes requesting to a base station by the mobile subscriber station to enter an idle-mode, wherein the base station is associated with a paging group comprising a plurality of base stations, and receiving from the base station an idle-mode response command to enter the idle-mode. The method also includes receiving from the base station a paging command comprising an action code associated with performing ranging while the mobile subscriber station is in the idle-mode to verify availability of the mobile subscriber station with respect to the base station, wherein if the ranging is not successfully preformed with the base station during a predetermined period, the base station continues to transmit the paging command until a paging retrial count reaches a predetermined threshold.

Claims

1. A method of verifying availability of a mobile subscriber station that is in an idle-mode, the method comprising:

requesting to a base station by the mobile subscriber station to enter an idle-mode, wherein the base station is associated with a paging group comprising a plurality of base stations;

receiving from the base station an idle-mode response command to enter the idle-mode, the idle-mode response command comprising at least one of the paging identifier, a paging cycle and a paging cycle offset; and

receiving from the base station a paging command comprising an action code associated with performing ranging while the mobile subscriber station is in the idle-mode to verify availability of the mobile subscriber station with respect to the base station, wherein if the ranging is not successfully performed with the base station during a predetermined period, the base station continues to transmit the paging command until a paging retrial count reaches a predetermined threshold.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the paging command is received when there is no downlink data to the mobile subscriber station.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein when the paging retrial count reaches the predetermined threshold, then the mobile subscriber station is removed from an idle-mode list maintained by the base station.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the removal of the mobile subscriber station of the idle-mode list is performed in each one of the plurality of base stations in the paging group.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the predetermined period is the paging cycle.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the predetermined period is based on a time expiration associated with a maximum allotted time for the mobile subscriber station to send a ranging request in response to the paging command from the base station.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein when the paging retrial count reaches the predetermined threshold, then the mobile subscriber station is removed from an idle-mode list maintained by a paging controller.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the paging command is received when there is traffic data to be downlinked to the mobile subscriber station.

9. A method of verifying availability of a mobile subscriber station that is in an idle-mode, the method comprising:

requesting to a paging controller by the mobile subscriber station to enter an idle-mode, wherein the paging controller is associated with a paging group comprising a plurality of base stations;

receiving from the paging controller an idle-mode response command to enter the idle-mode, the idle-mode response command comprising at least one of the paging identifier, a paging cycle and a paging cycle offset; and

receiving from the paging controller a paging command comprising an action code associated with performing ranging while the mobile subscriber station is in the idle-mode to verify availability of the mobile subscriber station with respect to the paging controller, wherein if the ranging is not successfully performed with the paging controller during a predetermined period, the paging controller continues to transmit the paging command until a paging retrial count reaches a predetermined threshold.

10. A method of verifying availability of a mobile subscriber station that is in an idle-mode, the method comprising:

receiving from the mobile subscriber station a request to enter an idle-mode, wherein a base station is associated with a paging group operatively connected to a plurality of base stations;

transmitting to the mobile subscriber station an idle-mode response command to enter the idle-mode in response to the request to enter the idle-mode, the idle-mode response command comprising at least one of the paging identifier, a paging cycle and a paging cycle offset; and

transmitting to the mobile subscriber station a paging command comprising an action code associated with performing ranging while the mobile subscriber station is in the idle-mode to verify availability of the mobile subscriber station with respect to the base station, wherein if the ranging is not successfully performed with the base station during a predetermined period, the base station continues to transmit the paging command until a paging retrial count reaches a predetermined threshold.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the paging command is received when there is no downlink data to the mobile subscriber station.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein when the paging retrial count reaches the predetermined threshold, then the mobile subscriber station is removed from an idle-mode list maintained by the base station.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the removal of the mobile subscriber station of the idle-mode list is performed in each one of the plurality of base stations in the paging group.

14. The method of claim 10, wherein the predetermined period is the paging cycle.

15. The method of claim 10, wherein the predetermined period is based on a time expiration associated with a maximum allotted time for the mobile subscriber station to send a ranging request in response to the paging command from the base station.

16. The method of claim 10, wherein when the paging retrial count reaches the predetermined threshold, then the mobile subscriber station is removed from an idle-mode list maintained by a paging controller.

17. The method of claim 10, wherein the paging command is received when there is traffic data to be downlinked to the mobile subscriber station.

18. A mobile subscriber station for informing availability while in an idle-mode to a base station, the mobile subscriber station comprising:

means for requesting to a base station by the mobile subscriber station to enter an idle-mode, wherein the base station is associated with a paging group comprising a plurality of base stations;

means for receiving from the base station an idle-mode response command to enter the idle-mode, the idle-mode response command comprising at least one of the paging identifier, a paging cycle and a paging cycle offset; and

means for receiving from the base station a paging command comprising an action code associated with performing ranging while the mobile subscriber station is in the idle-mode to verify availability of the mobile subscriber station with respect to the base station, wherein if the ranging is not successfully performed with the base station during a predetermined period, the base station continues to transmit the paging command until a paging retrial count reaches a predetermined threshold.

19. The mobile subscriber station of claim 18, wherein the paging command is received when there is no downlink data to the mobile subscriber station.

20. The mobile subscriber station of claim 18, wherein when the paging retrial count reaches the predetermined threshold, then the mobile subscriber station is removed from an idle-mode list maintained by the base station.

21. The mobile subscriber station of claim 19, wherein the removal of the mobile subscriber station of the idle-mode list is performed in each one of the plurality of base stations in the paging group.

22. The mobile subscriber station of claim 18, wherein the predetermined period is the paging cycle.

23. The mobile subscriber station of claim 18, wherein the predetermined period is based on a time expiration associated with a maximum allotted time for the mobile subscriber station to send a ranging request in response to the paging command from the base station.

24. The mobile subscriber station of claim 18, wherein when the paging retrial count reaches the predetermined threshold, then the mobile subscriber station is removed from an idle-mode list maintained by a paging controller.

25. The mobile subscriber station of claim 18, wherein the paging command is received when there is traffic data to be downlinked to the mobile subscriber station.

26. A base station for verifying availability of a mobile subscriber station that is in an idle-mode, the base station comprising:

means for receiving a request from the mobile subscriber station to enter an idle-mode, wherein a base station is associated with a paging group operatively connected to a plurality of base stations;

means for transmitting to the mobile subscriber station an idle-mode response command to enter the idle-mode in response to the request to enter the idle-mode, the idle-mode response command comprising at least one of the paging identifier, a paging cycle and a paging cycle offset; and

means for transmitting to the mobile subscriber station a paging command comprising an action code associated with performing ranging while the mobile subscriber station is in the idle-mode to verify availability of the mobile subscriber station with respect to the base station, wherein if the ranging is not successfully performed with the base station during a predetermined period, the base station continues to transmit the paging command until a paging retrial count reaches a predetermined threshold.

27. The base station of claim 26, wherein the paging command is received when there is no downlink data to the mobile subscriber station.

28. The base station of claim 26, wherein when the paging retrial count reaches the predetermined threshold, then the mobile subscriber station is removed from an idle-mode list maintained by the base station.

29. The base station of claim 28, wherein the removal of the mobile subscriber station of the idle-mode list is performed in each one of the plurality of base stations in the paging group.

30. The base station of claim 26, wherein the predetermined period is the paging cycle.

31. The base station of claim 26, wherein the predetermined period is based on a time expiration associated with a maximum allotted time for the mobile subscriber station to send a ranging request in response to the paging command from the base station.

32. The base station of claim 26, wherein when the paging retrial count reaches the predetermined threshold, then the mobile subscriber station is removed from an idle-mode list maintained by a paging controller.

33. The base station of claim 26, wherein the paging command is received when there is traffic data to be downlinked to the mobile subscriber station.

34. A method of communicating data in a wireless mobile communication system during idle-mode, the method comprising:

transmitting to a network entity a request to perform location update of a mobile subscriber station (MSS) as part of powering down the MSS via a ranging request message;

performing location update of the MSS by the network entity, wherein performing location update includes discontinuing idle-mode paging control for the MSS at the time of power down; and

releasing all idle-mode retaining information related to the MSS if power down location update of the MSS is successful.

35. The method of claim 34, wherein the ranging request message includes a power down indicator

36. The method of claim 34, wherein the network entity is a paging controller or a base station.

37. The method of claim 34, further comprising updating status of the MSS and deleting all information for the MSS in performing location update of the MSS.

38. The method of claim 34, further comprising performing availability check using location update polling if power down location update of the MSS is unsuccessful.

39. The method of claim 38, wherein determining unavailability of the MSS and deleting all idle-mode retaining information by the network entity if the MSS fails to answer for the location update polling up to paging retry count.

40. The method of claim 34, wherein power down means power off.

41. A method of communicating data in a wireless mobile communication system during idle-mode, the method comprising:

transmitting to a network entity a request to perform location update of a mobile subscriber station (MSS) as part of powering down the MSS via a ranging request message;

performing location update of the MSS by the network entity, wherein performing location update includes releasing all idle-mode retaining information related to the MSS.

42. The method of claim 41, further comprising discontinuing idle-mode paging control for the MSS at the time of power down in performing location update of the MSS.

43. A method of communicating data in a wireless mobile communication system during idle-mode, the method comprising:

transmitting to a network entity a request to perform location update of a mobile subscriber station (MSS) as part of powering down the MSS via a ranging request message; and

performing location update of the MSS by the network entity, wherein performing location update includes releasing all idle-mode retaining information related to the MSS if power down location update of the MSS is successful, and wherein performing availability check using location update polling if power down location update of the MSS is unsuccessful

44. The method of claim 43, wherein determining unavailability of the MSS and deleting all idle-mode retaining information by the network entity if the MSS fails to answer for the location update polling up to paging retry count.

45. The method of claim 43, further comprising discontinuing idle-mode paging control for the MSS at the time of power down in performing location update of the MSS.
