Abstract

Methods for surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization, which can utilize a catecholic alkyl halide initiator.

Claims

1. A surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) method of surface modification comprising:

a) providing a surface to be modified;

b) applying a polymerization initiator to the surface, the polymerization initiator being substantially immobile after application, the initiator comprising a DHPD-terminated halide;

c) reacting a monomer with the polymerization initiator to produce a surface-bound polymer by the monomer comprising alkylene oxide.

2. A method according to claim 1 wherein the polymerization initiator comprises a catechol-terminated halide.

3. A method according to claim 1 wherein the monomer comprises OEGMEMA.

4. A method according to claim 1 wherein the DHPD-terminated halide comprises DOPA halide.

5. A method according to claim 1 wherein the surface to be modified is titanium.

6. A method according to claim 1 wherein the surface to be modified is at least a portion of a medical device.

7. A method according to claim 1 wherein the surface to be modified is the hull of a ship.

8. A method according to claim 6 wherein the surface to be modified is at least a portion of a cardiovascular stent.

9. A method of preparing an SI-ATRP initiator comprising:

providing a DHPD compound and

halogenating the DHPD to produce the initiator.

10. A method according to claim 9 wherein the DHPD compound is DOPA.

11. A method of using a catecholic compound for surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization, said method comprising:

providing a substrate;

modifying the surface of said substrate with a medium comprising a catecholic-terminated alkyl halide; and

reacting said modified surface and a monomer comprising a poly(alkylene oxide) moiety.

12. The method according to claim 11 wherein said medium comprises an aqueous solution of said alkyl halide.

13. The method according to claim 11 wherein said alkyl halide is 2-Bromo-N-[2-(3,4-dihydroxy-phenyl)-ethyl]-propionamide.

14. The method according to claim 11 wherein said substrate comprises titanium.

15. The method according to claim 13 wherein said substrate comprises at least a portion of a medical device.

16. The method according to claim 15 wherein said substrate comprises at least a portion of a cardiovascular stent.

17. The method according to claim 11 wherein said monomer comprises OEGMEMA.

18. The method according to claim 17 wherein said monomer comprises n ethylene oxide moieties, wherein n ranges from about 4 to about 9.

19. The method according to claim 18 wherein said reaction is adjusted by at least one of monomer concentration and reaction time.

20. The method according to claim 11 wherein said medium comprises a second monomer, and said reaction product comprises a block polymer.
