Abstract

The invention relates to an apparatus for performing a treatment on tissue. The apparatus can feature a hand piece having a waveguide with an output for applying radiation from an optical radiation source to the tissue. In addition, the apparatus can include a reflective mask coupled to the output of the waveguide. The reflective mask can have a spatial pattern with openings therein to provide selected treatment spots on the tissue.

Claims

1. An apparatus for performing a treatment on tissue, comprising:

a hand piece having a waveguide with an output end for applying radiation from an optical radiation source to the tissue; and

a mask coupled to the hand piece, the mask having a spatial pattern to allow passage of radiation to provide separate treatment spots in the tissue.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the mask is coupled to the output end of the waveguide.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the mask is reflective.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the mask is non-absorptive.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the optical radiation source is an incoherent source.

6. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the optical radiation source is a lamp.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the optical radiation source is in the hand piece.

8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the mask is a coating on the output end of the waveguide.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the apparatus includes a cooling mechanism to cool the tissue during use.

10. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the cooling mechanism cools the waveguide.

11. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the spatial pattern includes optical openings.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the openings have identical shapes.

13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the openings are shaped as one of squares, rectangles or circles.

14. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the optical openings are periodically spaced in the mask.

15. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a contact sensor to sense contact of the apparatus with the tissue.

16. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a mechanism for directing photons reflected from the mask back toward the mask and the tissue.

17. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the mechanism includes a reflector.

18. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a mechanism for directing photons reflected from the tissue back toward the tissue.

19. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the mechanism comprises a reflector formed on an outer surface of the waveguide.

20. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the reflector is a scattering reflector.

21. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein at least some of the treatment spots in the tissue have a size less than 50 um.

22. An apparatus for performing a treatment on tissue, comprising:

a waveguide adapted to be in proximity to the tissue when in use, the waveguide having a radiation receiving surface and a radiation output surface to output radiation; and

a spatial mask coupled to the waveguide, the spatial mask having a pattern of optical openings for creating treatment islands in the tissue.

23. The apparatus of claim 22, wherein the spatial mask is located at the radiation output surface of the waveguide.

24. The apparatus of claim 22, wherein the spatial mask is made from a reflective material.

25. The apparatus of claim 22, wherein the optical openings are transparent.

26. The apparatus of claim 22, wherein the spatial mask is a coating on the radiation output surface of the waveguide.

27. The apparatus of claim 22, wherein the tissue between treatment islands is substantially undamaged by radiation from the apparatus.

28. The apparatus of claim 22, further comprising an optical energy source for supplying radiation.

29. The apparatus of claim 28, wherein the optical radiation source comprises an incoherent source.

30. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the incoherent source is a lamp.

31. A dermatological device, comprising:

a waveguide having an output surface to output radiation; and

a mask coating at least part of the output surface of the waveguide, the mask coating comprising a reflective material to reflect optical radiation and optical openings in the reflective material to allow passage therethrough of at least some optical radiation to create separate treatment spots in the tissue.

32. An apparatus for performing a treatment on tissue, comprising:

a) a light emitting assembly for applying optical radiation to the tissue; and

b) a mask attached to the light emitting assembly, the mask being disposed between the light emitting assembly and the tissue when the apparatus is in use, the mask comprising a reflective material to reflect optical radiation from the light emitting assembly and optical openings in the reflective material to allow passage therethrough of at least a portion of optical radiation from the light emitting assembly to create separate treatment spots in the tissue.

33. The apparatus of claim 32, wherein the light emitting assembly includes an incoherent source.

34. The apparatus of claim 33, wherein the incoherent source is a lamp.

35. The apparatus of claim 33, wherein the lamp is selected from a group consisting of a metal halide lamp, mercury vapor lamp, high pressure sodium lamp, fluorescent lamp, halogen lamp, and incandescent lamp.

36. The apparatus of claim 32, wherein the light emitting assembly and mask are in a hand piece.

37. An apparatus for performing a treatment on tissue, comprising:

a light path between an optical radiation source and a surface adapted to be in optical contact with the tissue; and

a reflective mask with a plurality of optical openings, wherein the reflective mask is within the light path and the openings allow for passage of at least a portion of optical radiation from the optical radiation source to the tissue to provide separate treatment spots in the tissue.

38. The apparatus of claim 37, wherein the selected treatment spots are damage islands.

39. An apparatus for performing a treatment on a tissue, comprising:

a waveguide adapted to be in proximity to the tissue when in use, the waveguide having a radiation receiving surface and a radiation output surface; and

a modulated profile at the radiation output surface of the waveguide, the modulated profile having spatial non-uniformities to output radiation to treat the tissue in a non-uniform manner.

40. The apparatus of claim 39, further comprising an incoherent light source for supplying radiation to the waveguide.

41. The apparatus of claim 40, further comprising a reflector around the incoherent source.

42. The apparatus of claim 40, further comprising a filter.

43. An apparatus for performing a treatment on a tissue, comprising:

a waveguide adapted to be in proximity to the tissue when in use, the waveguide having a radiation receiving surface and a radiation output surface; and

a phase mask at the radiation output surface of the waveguide, the phase mask having a patterned index variation for outputting radiation to create separate treatment spots in the tissue.

44. A method for performing a treatment on tissue, comprising:

supplying radiation to a waveguide with an output end for applying the radiation to the tissue; and

patterning the radiation with a mask, the mask having a spatial pattern to allow passage of radiation to provide separate treatment spots in the tissue.

45. The method of claim 44, wherein the mask is coupled to the output end of the waveguide.

46. The method of claim 44, wherein the mask is reflective.

47. The method of claim 44, wherein the mask is non-absorptive.

48. The method of claim 44, further comprising supplying the radiation with an optical radiation source.

49. The method of claim 48, wherein the optical radiation source is an incoherent source.

50. The method of claim 49, wherein the optical radiation source is a lamp.

51. The method of claim 48, further comprising a hand piece, wherein the optical radiation source is in the hand piece.

52. The method of claim 44, wherein the mask is a coating on the output end of the waveguide.

53. The method of claim 44, further comprising cooling the tissue.

54. The method of claim 44, wherein the spatial pattern includes optical openings.

55. The method of claim 54, wherein the openings have identical shapes.

56. The method of claim 54, wherein the openings are shaped as one of squares, rectangles or circles.

57. The method of claim 44, further comprising sensing contact of the waveguide with the tissue.

58. The method of claim 44, further comprising reflecting photons using the mask.

59. The method of claim 58, further comprising directing photons reflected from the mask back toward the mask and the tissue.

60. The method of claim 44, wherein at least some of the treatment spots in the tissue have a size less than 50 um.
