Abstract

Methods and systems are provided for acquiring seismic data. An ambient electromagnetic signal having a known time dependence is transmitted for propagation within a survey area. The ambient electromagnetic signal is received at distinct geographic locations with independently operating data acquisition units positioned at the distinct locations. Data representing acoustic signals received from the Earth at the distinct geographic locations are collected with the data acquisition units. The collected acoustic signals for the distinct geographic locations are synchronized by correlating the known time dependence of the propagated electromagnetic signal with time dependencies of the collected acoustic signals.

Claims

1. A method for acquiring seismic data, the method comprising:

transmitting an ambient electromagnetic signal having a known time dependence for propagation within a survey area;

receiving the ambient electromagnetic signal at a plurality of distinct geographic locations with independently operating data acquisition units positioned at the plurality of distinct locations;

collecting data representing acoustic signals received from the Earth at the plurality of distinct geographic locations with the data acquisition units; and

synchronizing the collected acoustic signals for the plurality of distinct geographic locations by correlating the known time dependence of the propagated electromagnetic signal with time dependences of the collected acoustic signals.

2. The method recited in claim 1 wherein transmitting the ambient electromagnetic signal comprises:

receiving the ambient electromagnetic signal at a repeater station; and

retransmitting the ambient electromagnetic signal from the repeater station.

3. The method recited in claim 2 wherein:

the repeater station has a unique serial number; and

retransmitting the ambient electromagnetic signal comprises transmitting the ambient electromagnetic signal with the unique serial number.

4. The method recited in claim 1 wherein the ambient electromagnetic signal represents a sequence of dual-tone multiple-frequency signals.

5. The method recited in claim 1 further comprising analyzing the synchronized acoustic signals to identify a subterranean feature.

6. The method recited in claim 1 wherein collecting data representing acoustic signals is performed substantially continuously by the independently operating data acquisition units for a period of time that exceeds one hour.

7. The method recited in claim 1 wherein collecting data representing acoustic signals is performed substantially continuously by the independently operating data acquisition units for a period of time that exceeds one day.

8. The method recited in claim 1 further comprising retrieving the collected data from the data acquisition units by downloading the collected data from each such data acquisition unit to a host computer.

9. The method recited in claim 8 further comprising recharging a battery source comprised by the each such data acquisition unit substantially simultaneously with downloading the collected data from the each such data acquisition unit.

10. The method recited in claim 1 wherein the ambient electromagnetic signal comprises a command to change a state of the data acquisition units from a dormant state to an active state.

11. The method recited in claim 10 wherein the command corresponds to one or more DTMF numbers.

12. The method recited in claim 1 further comprising transmitting a command with the ambient electromagnetic signal to change a state of the data acquisition units from an active state to a dormant state.

13. The method recited in claim 12 wherein the command corresponds to one or more DTMF numbers.

14. The method recited in claim 1 wherein correlating the known time dependence comprises creating a master timing record with a correlation algorithm on timing data stored by the data acquisition units.

15. A system for acquiring seismic data, the system comprising:

a transmitter system adapted to transmit an ambient electromagnetic signal having a known time dependence for propagation within a survey area;

a plurality of independently operating data acquisition units distributed at a plurality of distinct geographical locations within the survey area, each such data acquisition unit being adapted to collect data representing acoustic signals received from the Earth and to receive the ambient electromagnetic signal; and

a processor coupled with a computer-readable storage medium having a computer-readable program embodied therein for directing operation of the processor, the computer-readable program including instructions for synchronizing the collected acoustic signals for the plurality of distinct geographical locations by correlating the known time dependence of the propagated electromagnetic signal with time dependences of the collected acoustic signals.

16. The system recited in claim 15 further comprising a repeater station adapted to receive the ambient electromagnetic signal and to retransmit the ambient electromagnetic signal.

17. The system recited in claim 16 wherein:

the repeater station has a unique serial number; and

the repeater station is adapted to retransmit the ambient electromagnetic signal with the unique serial number.

18. The system recited in claim 15 wherein the transmitter system comprises a dual-tone multiple-frequency system adapted to provide a sequence of dual-tone multiple-frequency signals for generation of the ambient electromagnetic signal.

19. The system recited in claim 15 wherein the computer-readable program further includes instructions for analyzing the synchronized acoustic signals to identify a subterranean feature.

The system recited in claim 15 further comprising a data offload and charger unit provided in communication with the processor and the plurality of data acquisition units and adapted to download the collected data from the plurality of data acquisition units and to recharge a battery source comprised by each such data acquisition unit substantially simultaneously.

21. The system recited in claim 15 wherein the transmitter is adapted to transmit a command with the ambient electromagnetic signal to change a state of each of the data acquisition units from an active state to a dormant state.

22. The system recited in claim 15 wherein the transmitter is adapted to transmit a command with the ambient electromagnetic signal to change a state of each of the data acquisition units from a dormant state to an active state.
