Abstract

Disclosed is a bone fixation device of the type useful for connecting soft tissue or tendon to bone or for connecting two or more bones or bone fragments together. The device comprises an elongate body having a distal anchor thereon. An axially moveable proximal anchor is carried by the proximal end of the fixation device, to accommodate different bone dimensions and permit appropriate tensioning of the fixation device.

Claims

1. An orthopedic fixation device, comprising:

an elongate body, having a proximal end and a distal end;

a distal anchor on the distal end;

a retention structure on the elongate body, proximal to the anchor; and

a proximal anchor, moveably carried by the elongate body, the proximal anchor comprising a tubular sleeve and a radially outward extending head;

at least one complementary retention structure on the proximal anchor configured for permitting proximal movement of the elongate body with respect to the proximal anchor but resisting distal movement of the elongate body with respect the proximal anchor; and

a washer that is angularly moveable with respect to the longitudinal axis of the tubular sleeve, the washer having aperture that is elongated with respect to a first axis such that the washer permits greater angular movement with respect to the longitudinal axis of the tubular sleeve in a plane containing the first axis.

The orthopedic fixation device of claim 1, wherein the aperture circumscribes a channel having a width in a first direction and a height in a second direction that is perpendicular to the first direction, the width being smaller than the maximum diameter of the head and the height being greater than the width.

3. The orthopedic fixation device of claim 1, wherein the distal anchor comprises a helical flange.

4. The orthopedic fixation device of claim 1, wherein the distal anchor is moveable from an axial orientation for distal insertion through a bore to an incline orientation to resist axial movement through the bore.

5. The orthopedic fixation device of claim 1, wherein the retention structures of the elongate body and the proximal anchor permit proximal movement of the elongate body with respect to the proximal anchor without rotation.

6. The orthopedic fixation device of claim 1, wherein the washer includes a bottom wall, a side wall and a lip for retaining the head of the proximal anchor within the washer.

7. The orthopedic fixation device of claim 1, wherein the elongated body comprises a first portion and a second portion that are detachably coupled together at a junction.

8. The orthopedic fixation device of claim 7, wherein the first portion includes an anti-rotation structure and the proximal anchor includes a complementary anti-rotation structure to prevent rotation between the first portion and the proximal anchor.

9. A orthopedic fixation device;

an elongate pin, having a proximal end, a distal end and a first retention structure;

at least one distal anchor carried by the elongate pin;

a proximal anchor, axially moveable with respect to the elongate pin and comprising a split ring positioned within an annular recess formed within the proximal anchor, the split ring having at least one gap formed between two ends, the split ring being moveable between a first position and a second position, the second position being located closer to the longitudinal axis of the elongate pin as compared to the first portion so as to engage the first retention structure and prevent proximal movement of the proximal anchor with respect to the elongated pin while the first position allows distal movement of the proximal anchor with respect to the pin; and

anti-rotational structure for preventing rotation of the split ring about the longitudinal axis of the elongate pin.

10. A orthopedic fixation device as in claim 9, wherein the elongate pin includes at least one anti-rotational feature configured to engage a complementary rotational feature of the proximal anchor.

11. A orthopedic fixation device as in claim 10, wherein the anti-rotational structure positions the gap of the split ring such that it is positioned over the anti-rotational feature of the elongate pin.

12. A orthopedic fixation device as in claim 11, wherein the anti-rotational feature of the elongate pin comprises at least one flat side.

13. A orthopedic fixation device as in claim 11, wherein the anti-rotational feature comprise includes a pair of tabs that extend inwardly from the tubular body toward the longitudinal axis of the tubular body and positioned between the gap of the split ring.

14. The orthopedic fixation device of claim 9, wherein the distal anchor comprises a helical flange.

15. The orthopedic fixation device of claim 9, wherein the distal anchor is moveable from an axial orientation for distal insertion through a bore to an incline orientation to resist axial movement through the bore.

16. The orthopedic fixation device of claim 9, wherein the elongate pin comprises a first portion and a second portion that are detachably coupled together at a junction.

17. The orthopedic fixation device of claim 16, wherein the first portion includes an anti-rotation structure and the proximal anchor includes a complementary anti-rotation structure to prevent rotation between the first portion and the proximal anchor.
