Abstract

A system and method for providing channels within application servers, messaging systems, and transaction-based systems. Network traffic internal to the server is carried over these channels. This allows the administrator to segregate internal network traffic, usually for security or performance reasons. In addition administrators have finer, dynamic, control over external network channels.

Claims

1. A system for providing channels within application servers, comprising

a server, configured to host several channels for receiving communications from clients and/or other servers;

and

a plurality of channels that may be configured and activated to receive particular communications at the server and process those particular communications according to the configuration of the channel.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein a channel may be scoped to an application at the server, for receiving communications directed to that application.

3. The system of claim 2 wherein access to the application is only possible via the configured channel.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the channel may be activated or suspended by an administrator.

5. The system of claim 4 wherein the activation or suspension happens dynamically without necessitating the restart of the server.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the system includes a plurality of servers operating within a cluster, and wherein a channel is configured at each server for intra-cluster communications.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the server includes a plurality of virtual web sites operating thereon and wherein each of said plurality of virtual web sites includes a channel associated therewith for receiving requests for that virtual web site.

8. A method for providing channels within application servers, comprising the steps of:

providing a server configured to host several channels for receiving communications from clients and/or other servers; and

configuring a plurality of channels to receive particular communications at the server and process those particular communications according to the configuration of the channel.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein a channel may be scoped to an application at the server, for receiving communications directed to that application.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein access to the application is only possible via the configured channel.

11. The method of claim 8 wherein the channel may be activated or suspended by an administrator.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the activation or suspension happens dynamically without necessitating the restart of the server.

13. The method of claim 8 wherein the system includes a plurality of servers operating within a cluster, and wherein a channel is configured at each server for intra-cluster communications.

14. The method of claim 8 wherein the server includes a plurality of virtual web sites operating thereon and wherein each of said plurality of virtual web sites includes a channel associated therewith for receiving requests for that virtual web site.
