Abstract

A method for dynamically adjusting QoS parameters associated with a virtual circuit is disclosed. The virtual circuit includes a first end connected to a first router and a second end connected to a second router. The method includes receiving an offer message at the second router, and sending a request message to the first router. The offer message includes a first set of QoS parameters and the request message includes a second set of QoS parameters. The method further includes receiving a request confirmation message at the second router, receiving a new offer message at the second router, and sending information compliant with the second set of QoS parameters to the first router. The new offer message includes the second set of QoS parameters.

Claims

1. A method for dynamically adjusting QoS parameters associated with a virtual circuit, the virtual circuit comprising a first end connected to a first router and a second end connected to a second router, the method comprising:

receiving an offer message at the second router, wherein receiving the offer message includes receiving a first set of QoS parameters;

sending a request message to the first router, wherein sending the request message includes sending a second set of QoS parameters;

receiving a request confirmation message at the second router;

receiving a new offer message at the second router, wherein receiving the new offer message includes receiving the second set of QoS parameters; and

sending information compliant with the second set of QoS parameters to the first router.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the first set of QoS parameters is different than the second set of QoS parameters.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving the offer message includes receiving at least one of:

an offer ID;

a keepalive interval;

a maximum transmit unit size for the virtual circuit; and

a transmission overhead incurred by the first router.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein sending the request message includes sending at least one of:

a request ID;

a request queue timer;

minimum QoS parameters for the virtual circuit; and

a sensitive traffic indication.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

sending an offer rejection message to the first router prior to sending the request message.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein sending the offer rejection message includes sending a cause code.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

sending an offer confirmation message to the first router prior to sending the request message.

8. The method of claim 7, further comprising adjusting QoS mechanisms at the second router.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

sending a keepalive message after sending the request message.

10. A method for dynamically adjusting QoS parameters associated with a virtual circuit, the virtual circuit comprising a first end connected to a first router and a second end connected to a second router, the method comprising:

sending an offer message to the second router, wherein sending the offer message includes sending a first set of QoS parameters;

receiving an offer rejection message at the first router;

sending a new offer message to the second router, wherein sending the new offer message includes sending a second set of QoS parameters; and

receiving information compliant with the second set of QoS parameters at the first router.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein sending the offer message includes sending at least one of:

an offer ID;

a keepalive interval;

a maximum transmit unit size for the virtual circuit; and

a transmission overhead incurred by the first router.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein sending the offer rejection message includes sending a cause code.

13. The method of claim 10, wherein the first set of QoS parameters is different than the second set of QoS parameters.

14. A computer readable medium, having instructions stored thereon which when executed by a computing device, cause the computing device to:

determine whether the computing device is configured to transmit information compliant with a set of QoS parameters;

adjust at least one QoS mechanism for controlling at least one of the QoS parameters; and

send information compliant with the set of QoS parameters.

15. The computer readable medium of claim 14, wherein the instructions, when executed by the computing device, further cause the computing device to determine whether the computing device is configured to transmit information compliant with a maximum transmit unit size.

16. The computer readable medium of claim 14, wherein the instructions, when executed by the computing device, further cause the computing device to determine whether the computing device is configured to transmit information compliant with a minimum transmission rate.

17. The computer readable medium of claim 14, wherein the instructions, when executed by the computing device, further cause the computing device to adjust more than one QoS mechanism.

18. A system, comprising:

a first router; and

a second router in communication with the first router via a virtual circuit defined by the first and second routers, wherein the first router is configured for dynamically adjusting at least one QoS parameter associated with the virtual circuit before sending information to the second router.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein the second router is configured for dynamically adjusting the at least one QoS parameter before sending information to the first router.

20. The system of claim 18, wherein the first and second routers are configured for communication with an adjacent lower layer.
