1. An ethylenic copolymer comprising:

  • a) from 10% to 80% by weight, relative to the total weight of the copolymer, of at least one monomer of formula (I);

    R1 is chosen from a hydrogen atom and linear and branched hydrocarbon radicals CpH2p+1 wherein p is an integer ranging from 1 to 12 inclusive;

    x is chosen from 0 and 1;

    R2 is chosen from linear, branched and cyclic, saturated and unsaturated, optionally aromatic, divalent hydrocarbon radicals having from 1 to 30 carbon atoms, said radicals optionally comprising from 1 to 18 heteroatoms chosen from O, N, S, F, Si, and P;

    m is chosen from 0 and 1;

    n is an integer ranging from 3 to 300 inclusive;

    R3 is chosen from a hydrogen atom and linear, branched and cyclic, saturated and unsaturated, optionally aromatic, hydrocarbon radicals having from 1 to 30 carbon atoms, said radicals optionally comprising from 1 to 20 heteroatoms chosen from O, N, S, F, Si, and P; and

    salts thereof;

    b) from 20% to 90% by weight, relative to the total weight of the copolymer, of at least one anionic monomer and salts thereof, chosen from maleic anhydride and monomers of formula (II);

    R1 is chosen from a hydrogen atom and linear and branched hydrocarbon radicals CpH2p+1 wherein p is an integer ranging from 1 to 12 inclusive;

    is chosen from 0 and 1; and

    Y is a group chosen from —

    COOH, —

    SO3H, —

    OSO3H, —

    PO3H2, and —

    OPO3H2; and

    c) from 0% to 70% by weight, relative to the total weight of the copolymer, of at least one additional nonionic hydrophilic monomer.
