Abstract

A method of communicating data in a wireless communication system is disclosed. More specifically, a method discloses transmitting a request by a mobile subscriber station (MSS) to a network entity via a de-registration request message requesting the network entity to retain a preferred session information, and receiving a selected session information via a de-registration command response from the network entity.

Claims

1. A method of communicating data for entering idle-mode, the method comprising:

transmitting a request by a mobile subscriber station (MSS) to a network entity via a de-registration request message requesting the network entity to retain a preferred session information; and

receiving a selected session information via a de-registration command response from the network entity.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the preferred session information is a list of preferred session information.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the network entity is a base station to which the MSS seeks to enter idle-mode.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the network entity is a serving base station.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the serving base station transmits the selected session information to a plurality of base stations in a paging group or to a paging controller.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein the serving base station performs idle-mode activity for the MSS.

7. The method of claim 4, wherein the paging controller performs idle-mode activity for the MSS.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the network entity is a paging controller.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the paging controller transmits the selected session information to a plurality of network entities in the paging group.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the plurality of network entities is a plurality of base stations.

11. The method of claim 8, wherein the paging controller performs idle-mode activity for the MSS.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the de-registration request message includes a request by the MSS to terminate normal mode and enter idle-mode.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the selected session information includes session information selected by the network entity.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the selected session information is the list of session information retained by the network entity and the MSS in idle-mode.

15. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving a de-registration command message from the network entity.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the de-registration command message includes a request to the MSS to transmit the de-registration request message.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the request indicates a specified time at which for the MSS to transmit the de-registration request message.

18. A method of communicating data for entering idle-mode, the method comprising:

receiving a request from a mobile subscriber station (MSS) via a de-registration request message requesting the network entity to retain a preferred session information; and

transmitting a selected session information via a de-registration command response from the network entity.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising transmitting a request by a mobile subscriber station (MSS) to a network entity via a de-registration request message requesting the network entity to retain a preferred session information, and receiving a selected session information via a de-registration command response from the network entity.

20. The method of claim 18, further comprising receiving a de-registration command message from the network entity.

21. A communication system, comprising a mobile subscriber station (MSS) for transmitting a request to a network entity via a de-registration request message requesting the network entity to retain a preferred session information, and receiving a selected session information via a de-registration command response from the network entity.

22. The system of claim 21, further comprising a network entity for receiving a request from a mobile subscriber station (MSS) via a de-registration request message requesting the network entity to retain a preferred session information, and transmitting a selected session information via a de-registration command response from the network entity.

23. A method of communicating with a network entity for updating location of a mobile subscriber station (MSS), the method comprising:

transmitting a request to a second network entity via a ranging request message requesting a location update of the MSS from a first network entity;

receiving a selected session information to be updated via a response message from the second network entity; and

performing network entry procedure to update session information after the location of the MSS is updated from the first network entity to the second network entity.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein the first network entity is the network entity to which the MSS has entered idle-mode.

25. The method of claim 23, wherein the first network entity and the second network entity is a base station or a paging controller.

26. The method of claim 23, further comprises transmitting a ranging request message by the MSS to the second network entity.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein the ranging request message includes an identification of the first network entity to which the MSS entered idle-mode.

28. The method of claim 23, wherein the selected session information is indicated by a list of session information.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein the session information is updated by the MSS and the second network entity.

30. The method of claim 28, wherein the second network entity is a bases station or a paging controller.

31. The method of claim 28, wherein the session information list includes a network entry procedure which the MSS performs to enter a network.

32. The method of claim 31, wherein the network entry procedure includes updating the selected session information retained in the MSS and the first network entity.

33. The method of claim 23, further comprising receiving a paging message from the second network entity.

34. The method of claim 33, wherein the paging message includes an identification of the MSS.

35. The method of claim 34, wherein the paging message further includes an action code for the MSS which allows the MSS to perform a location update.

36. A method of communicating with a mobile subscriber station (MSS) for updating location of the MSS, the method comprising:

receiving a request from the MSS to a second network entity via a ranging request message requesting an update of the location of the MSS from a first network entity;

transmitting a selected session information to be updated via response message from the second network entity to the MSS; and

performing network entry to update session information after the location of the MSS is updated from the first network entity to the second network entity.

37. A communication system, comprising a mobile subscriber station (MSS) for:

transmitting a request to a second network entity via a ranging request message requesting a location update of the MSS from a first network entity;

receiving a selected session information to be updated via a response message from the second network entity; and

performing network entry to update session information after the location of the MSS is updated from the first network entity to the second network entity.

38. The system of claim 37, further comprising at least one network entity for:

receiving a request from the MSS to a second network entity via a ranging request message requesting an update of the location of the MSS from a first network entity;

transmitting a selected session information to be updated via response message from the second network entity to the MSS; and

performing network entry to update session information after the location of the MSS is updated from the first network entity to the second network entity.

39. A method of communicating with a network entity for entering network, the method comprising:

transmitting a request to a second network entity via a ranging request message;

receiving a selected session information via a ranging response message from a second network entity, wherein the selected session information is received by the second network entity from a first network entity; and

entering a network of the second network entity.

40. The method of claim 39, wherein the first network entity retains last-updated session information of the MSS.

41. The method of claim 39, wherein the first network entity and the second network entity is a base station or a paging controller.

42. The method of claim 39, wherein the second network entity is a base station or a paging controller.

43. The method of claim 39, wherein the second network entity is the network entity to which the MSS seeks to enter idle-mode

44. The method of claim 39, wherein the ranging request message includes an identification of the first network entity to which the MSS entered idle-mode.

45. The method of claim 39, wherein the selected session information is indicated by a list of session information.

46. The method of claim 45, wherein the session information is updated by the MSS and the second network entity.

47. The method of claim 45, wherein the second network entity is a bases station or a paging controller.

48. The method of claim 45, wherein the session information list includes a network entry procedure which the MSS performs to enter a network.

49. The method of claim 48, wherein the network entry procedure includes updating the selected session information retained in the MSS and the second network entity.

50. The method of claim 39, further comprising receiving a paging message from the second network entity.

51. The method of claim 39, wherein the paging message includes an identification of the MSS.

52. The method of claim 51, wherein the paging message further includes an action code for the MSS which allows the MSS to perform a location update.

53. A method of communicating with a mobile subscriber station (MSS) for entering network, the method comprising:

receiving a request from the MSS via a ranging request message;

transmitting a selected session information via a ranging response message to the MSS, wherein the selected session information is received by the second network entity from a first network entity; and

permitting the MSS to enter a network of the second network entity.

54. A communication system, comprising a mobile subscriber station (MSS) for:

transmitting a request to a second network entity via a ranging request message;

receiving a selected session information via a ranging response message from a second network entity, wherein the selected session information is received by the second network entity from a first network entity; and

entering a network of the second network entity.

55. The system of claim 54, further comprising at least one network entity for:

receiving a request from the MSS via a ranging request message;

transmitting a selected session information via a ranging response message to the MSS, wherein the selected session information is received by the second network entity from a first network entity; and

permitting the MSS to enter a network of the second network entity.

56. A method of communicating data in a wireless broadband communication system, the method comprising:

transmitting to a first network entity a request to retain a network address via a request message;

entering idle-mode after receiving a response message from the first network entity;

receiving a paging message from a second network entity during idle-mode;

entering a network of the second network entity; and

receiving an internet protocol (IP) packet from the second network entity.

57. The method of claim 56, wherein the network address is the internet protocol (IP) address.

58. The method of claim 56, wherein the request message is a de-registration request (DREG-REQ) message.

59. The method of claim 56, wherein the request message includes a request by a mobile subscriber station (MSS) to enter idle-mode.

60. The method of claim 56, wherein the request message includes the IP address of a mobile subscriber station (MSS) for providing directly to the first network entity.

61. The method of claim 56, wherein the request message includes a request to the first network entity to retain the internet protocol (IP) address of a mobile subscriber station (MSS).

62. The method of claim 56, wherein the response message is a de-registration command (DREG-CMD) message.

63. The method of claim 56, wherein the response message includes a command to a mobile subscriber station (MSS) to enter idle-mode.

64. The method of claim 56, wherein the paging message notifies a mobile subscriber stations (MSS) of downlink data.

65. The method of claim 64, wherein the downlink data is the IP packet.

66. The method of claim 56, wherein at least one of the first network entity and the second entity is a base station, paging controller, access gateway, or base station controller.

67. The method of claim 66, wherein the paging controller retains certain MSS service and operational information useful for expediting a future MSS network re-entry from idle-mode

68. The method of claim 56, further comprising the first network entity communicating with a router in order to deliver the IP packet to the first network entity.

69. The method of claim 68, wherein a destination address of the IP packet is an IP address of a mobile subscriber station (MSS) retained in the first network entity.

70. The method of claim 68, wherein the router transmits to the first network entity an Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) request to acquire a link-layer address of an IP packet destination, and in response, the first network entity transmits to the router an ARP response for the MSS.

71. The method of claim 68, wherein the router transmits to the first network entity a neighbor solicitation to acquire a link-layer address of an IP packet destination, and the first network entity transmits to the router a neighbor advertisement for the MSS.

72. The method of claim 68, wherein the first network entity broadcasts an Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) response for a mobile subscriber station (MSS) to a plurality of network entities.

73. The method of claim 68, wherein the first network entity broadcasts a neighbor advertisement for a mobile subscriber station (MSS) to a plurality of network entities.

74. The method of claim 72 or 73, wherein at least one of the network entities is a base station, paging controller, access gateway, or base station controller.

75. The method of claim 74, wherein the paging controller retains certain MSS service and operational information useful for expediting a future MSS network re-entry from idle-mode.

76. A method of communicating data in a wireless broadband communication system, the method comprising:

receiving from a mobile subscriber station (MSS) to a first network entity a request to retain a network address via a request message;

permitting the MSS to enter idle-mode by transmitting a response message from the first network entity to the MSS;

transmitting a paging message from a second network entity during idle-mode;

permitting the MSS to enter a network of the second network entity; and

transmitting an internet protocol (IP) packet from the second network entity to the MSS.

77. A wireless broadband communication system, comprising a mobile subscriber station for:

transmitting to a first network entity a request to retain a network address via a request message;

entering idle-mode after receiving a response message from the first network entity;

receiving a paging message from a second network entity during idle-mode;

entering a network of the second network entity; and

receiving an internet protocol (IP) packet from the second network entity.

78. The system of claim 77, further comprising at least one network entity for:

receiving from a mobile subscriber station (MSS) to a first network entity a request to retain a network address via a request message;

permitting the MSS entry to idle-mode by transmitting a response message from the first network entity to the MSS;

transmitting a paging message from a second network entity during idle-mode;

permitting the MSS entry to a network of the second network entity; and

transmitting an internet protocol (IP) packet from the second network entity to the MSS.

79. A method of communicating data in a wireless broadband communication system, the method comprising:

transmitting via a request message a request to a first network entity to retain a convergence sublayer (CS) information;

entering idle-mode after receiving a response message from the first network entity;

receiving a paging message from a second network entity during idle-mode;

entering network of the second network; and

receiving a data packet from the second network entity.

80. The method of claim 79, wherein the CS information includes an internet protocol (IP) address.

81. The method of claim 79, wherein the CS information includes service flow-related information.

82. The method of claim 81, wherein the service flow-related information includes preferred service flow for a mobile subscriber station (MSS) to receive during idle-mode.

83. The method of claim 79, wherein the data packet corresponds with the CS information retained in the first network entity.

84. A method of communicating data in a wireless broadband communication system, the method comprising:

receiving from the MSS via a request message a request to a first network entity to retain a convergence sublayer (CS) information;

permitting entry to idle-mode after transmitting a response message to the MSS from the first network entity;

transmitting a paging message to the MSS from a second network entity during idle-mode;

permitting the MSS entry to network of the second network; and

transmitting a data packet to the MSS from the second network entity.

85. A wireless broadband communication system, comprising a mobile subscriber station (MSS) for:

transmitting via a request message a request to a first network entity to retain a convergence sublayer (CS) information;

entering idle-mode after receiving a response message from the first network entity;

receiving a paging message from a second network entity during idle-mode;

entering network of the second network; and

receiving a data packet from the second network entity.

86. The system of claim 85, comprising at least one network entity for:

receiving from the MSS via a request message a request to a first network entity to retain a convergence sublayer (CS) information;

permitting entry to idle-mode after transmitting a response message to the MSS from the first network entity;

transmitting a paging message to the MSS from a second network entity during idle-mode;

permitting the MSS entry to network of the second network; and

transmitting a data packet to the MSS from the second network entity.
