Abstract

The system and method of the present invention apply information filters (83A) hierarchically to information (14) such as, for example, alerts/events generated by an operational electronic system (10). Further, the system and method can display the results of the application of the information filters (83A) to information (14).

Claims

1. A method for managing at least one electronic system comprising the steps of:

creating a plurality of information filters;

creating at least one relationship between at least two of the plurality of information filters;

applying the plurality of information filters, according to the at least one relationship, to information generated by the at least one electronic system; and

creating management information based on the application of the plurality of information filters in order to manage the at least one electronic system.

2. The method as defined in claim 1 further comprising the steps of:

summarizing the management information;

providing the summarized management information in at least one user-selected form to at least one user-selected location; and

formatting the summarized management information according to criticality of the management information.

3. The method as defined in claim 2 further comprising the steps of:

saving the management information; and

saving the at least one user-selected form,

wherein the at least one user-selected form can be accessed at a later time from a user-selected location different from the at least one user-selected location.

4. The method as defined in claim 1 further comprising the steps of:

establishing a plurality of pre-selected filters; and

determining at least one of the plurality of information filters by combining at least two of the plurality of pre-selected filters.

5. The method as defined in claim 1 further comprising the steps of:

establishing a plurality of pre-selected filters; and

establishing at least one of the plurality of information filters by combining at least one of the plurality of pre-selected filters with at least one of the plurality of information filters.

6. The method as defined in claim 1 further comprising the step of:

determining at least one of the plurality of information filters by combining at least two of the plurality of information filters.

7. The method as defined in claim 1 wherein the step of creating relationships includes the step of:

applying at least one logical operator to the at least two of the plurality of information filters;

selecting the plurality of information filters from a group including at least one alert/event filter; and

selecting the information from a group including at least one alert/event.

17. A computer node for carrying out the method according to claim 1.

18. A communications network comprising at least one computer node according to claim 1.

19. A computer data signal embodied in electromagnetic signals traveling over a communications network carrying computer commands capable of causing a computer system in the computer communications network to practice the method of claim 1.

20. A computer readable medium having instructions embodied therein for the practice of the method of claim 1.

8. A system for managing at least one set of electronic components comprising:

a filter builder capable of creating at least one relationship between at least two of a plurality of pre-selected information filters, said filter builder defining at least one new filter according to said at least one relationship;

a filter analyst capable of combining said plurality of pre-selected information filters with said at least one new filter to form a filter hierarchy;

an information handler capable of receiving information from at least one set of electronic components;

a filter analyst capable of applying said filter hierarchy to said information to form management information;

a view model capable of providing said management information in at least one user-selected form to at least one user-selected location in order to manage the at least one electronic system.

9. The system as defined in claim 8 further comprising:

a node selection listener capable of supplying at least one hint, said at least one hint associated with said management information and with said at least one user-selected form.

10. A system for managing at least one electronic system comprising:

means for creating a plurality of information filters;

means for creating at least one relationship between at least two of said plurality of information filters;

means for applying said plurality of information filters, according to the at least one relationship, to information generated by the at least one electronic system; and

means for creating management information based on the application of said plurality of information filters in order to manage the at least one electronic system.

11. The system as defined in claim 10 further comprising:

means for summarizing said management information;

means for providing said summarized management information in at least one user-selected form to at least one user-selected location; and

means for formatting said summarized management information according to criticality of said management information.

12. The system as defined in claim 11 further comprising:

means for saving said management information; and

means for saving said at least one user-selected form,

wherein said at least one user-selected form can be accessed at a later time from a different said at least one user-selected location.

13. The system as defined in claim 10 further comprising:

means for establishing a plurality of pre-selected filters; and

means for determining at least one of said plurality of information filters by combining at least two of said plurality of pre-selected filters.

14. The system as defined in claim 10 further comprising:

means for establishing a plurality of pre-selected filters; and

means for determining at least one of said plurality of information filters by combining at least one of said plurality of pre-selected filters with at least one of said plurality of information filters.

15. The system as defined in claim 10 further comprising:

means for determining at least one of said plurality of information filters by combining at least two of said plurality of information filters.

16. The system as defined in claim 10 wherein said means for creating relationships comprises:

means for applying at least one logical operator to said at least two of the plurality of information filters,

wherein said plurality of information filters includes at least one alert/event filter, and

wherein said information includes at least one alert/event.
