Abstract

An implant and sleeve combination for at least partial insertion into a bone and/or cartilage. The implant includes a lower portion and the sleeve includes a cavity designed to at least partially receive the lower portion of the implant.

Claims

1. A bone implant system for non-dental applications comprising a sleeve and an implant for at least partial insertion into bone and/or cartilage, said implant including a head, a lower portion connected to the head, said sleeve including a cavity designed to at least partially telescopically receive at least a portion of said lower portion of said implant.

2. The bone implant system as defined in claim 1, wherein said sleeve includes a connector in said cavity to secure said lower portion of said implant in said cavity.

3. The bone implant system as defined in claim 2, wherein said connector in said cavity of said sleeve releasably secures said lower portion of said implant in said cavity.

4. The bone implant system as defined in claim 1, wherein said sleeve includes an outer surface connector designed to engage bone to secure said sleeve in an opening in said bone.

5. The bone implant system as defined in claim 1, wherein said sleeve includes at least one opening that provides a passageway between an outer surface of said sleeve and said cavity.

6. The bone implant system as defined in claim 1, wherein said sleeve includes a removable cap that at least partially seals said cavity when secured to said sleeve.

7. The bone implant system as defined in claim 1, wherein said sleeve includes a marker.

8. The bone implant defined in claim 1, wherein said sleeve at least partially includes and/or is coated with a coating material, said coating material including a compound that facilitates in the insertion and/or securing of the lower portion in said bone and/or cartilage, promotes and/or inhibits bone and/or other tissue growth, inhibits rejection of said implant, inhibits rejection of components connected to and/or located adjacent to said implant, reduces infection, reduces inflammation, reduces pain, promotes healing of surrounding tissue, combats cancer and/or other diseases, combats biological abnormalities, functions as a location and/or visual indicator or combinations thereof.

9. The bone implant system as defined in claim 1, wherein said sleeve includes at least one side slot design to enable said sleeve to change a cross-sectional area of said sleeve.

10. A method of at least partially inserting an implant into a bone and/or cartilage that is not associated with a jaw comprising:

a) selecting an implant, said implant including a head and a lower portion connected to the head;

b) selecting a sleeve that includes a cavity designed to at least partially telescopically receive said lower portion of said implant;

c) forming an opening in said bone and/or cartilage;

d) at least partially inserting said sleeve into an opening in the bone and/or cartilage inserting a sleeve into said opening in said bone and/or cartilage; and

,

e) at least partially inserting and securing said lower portion of said implant into said cavity of said sleeve.

The method as defined in claim 10, including the step allowing a period of time to pass after said sleeve is inserted in said opening in said bone and/or cartilage and prior to said lower portion of said implant being at least partially inserted and secured into said cavity of said sleeve, said period of time enabling said sleeve to at least partially set in said opening in said bone before said lower portion of said implant is at least partially inserted and secured into said cavity of said sleeve.

The method as defined in claim 10, including the step of simultaneously inserting said sleeve and said implant in said bone and/or cartilage, said lower portion of said implant at least partially inserted in said cavity of said sleeve prior to said sleeve being inserted in said bone and/or cartilage.

13. The method as defined in claim 10, wherein said step of inserting said sleeve is performed on an outpatient basis.
