Abstract

A system for processing a visual capture operation as described. The system receives an indication of a visual capture operation performed from a rendered document. The indication specifies both a text sequence capture as part of the capture operation and a supplemental marking captured as part of the capture operation. The system determines an action to perform in response to receiving the indication, based both upon the text sequence specified in the indication and the supplemental markings specified by the indication.

Claims

1. A method in a computing system for providing supplemental electronic materials relating to a rendered document, comprising:

receiving an indication of a text capture operation performed by a user from the rendered document, the indication specifying text captured as part of the text capture operation;

retrieving supplemental electronic materials relating to the rendered document;

in response receiving the indication;

using the captured text specified by the indication to identify a position in the rendered document at which the indicated text capture operation was performed;

causing a portion of the retrieved supplemental electronic materials that relates to the identified position to be displayed to the user.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the rendered document is an academic textbook.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising identifying the rendered document based upon the captured text specified by the indication.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the retrieved supplemental electronic materials were developed after the rendered document was rendered.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the retrieved supplemental electronic materials were developed by a developer unrelated to the publisher of the rendered document.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving an indication of a second text capture operation performed by a user from the rendered document, the indication specifying text captured as part of the second text capture operation;

in response receiving the indication of the second text capture operation;

using the captured text specified by the indication of the second text capture operation to identify a second position in the rendered document at which the indicated second text capture operation was performed;

causing a portion of the retrieved supplemental electronic materials that relates to the identified second position to be displayed to the user.

7. A text capture device, comprising:

a visual input subsystem for capturing images of text sequences from rendered documents; and

a processing subsystem for extracting from images captured by the visual input subsystem both human-readable content and non-human-readable content.

8. The text capture device of claim 7, further containing an audio input subsystem for capturing audio clips of users reading aloud from rendered documents.

9. A method in a computing system for processing a visual capture operation, comprising:

receiving an indication of a visual capture operation performed from rendered document, the indication specifying both a text sequence captured as part of the capture operation and a supplemental marking captured as part of the capture operation; and

determining an action to perform in response to receiving the indication, based both upon the text sequence specified by the indication and the supplemental marking specified by the indication.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the supplemental marking captured as part of the capture operation is a non-textual symbol.

11. The method of claim 9 wherein the indicated visual capture operation is performed by capture device, the method further comprising recognizing the supplemental marking in the capture device.

12. The method of claim 9 wherein the indicated visual capture operation is performed by capture device, the method further comprising recognizing the supplemental marking in a computer system external to the capture device.

13. The method of claim 9 wherein indicated visual capture operation is performed by a distinguished user, and wherein the determined action is displaying selected information on computer display visible to the distinguished user.

14. A method in a computing system for processing a textual capture operation, comprising:

receiving an indication of a textual capture operation performed from rendered document, the indication specifying both a text sequence captured as part of the capture operation and a visual characteristic of the captured text sequence; and

determining an action to perform in response to receiving the indication, based both upon the text sequence specified by the indication and the visual characteristic specified by the indication.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein the visual characteristic of the captured text sequence specified by the received indication is a font.

16. The method of claim 14 wherein the visual characteristic of the captured text sequence specified by the received indication is a font size.

17. The method of claim 14 wherein the visual characteristic of the captured text sequence specified by the received indication is a color.

18. The method of claim 14 wherein the visual characteristic of the captured text sequence specified by the received indication is a formatting option.

19. The method of claim 14 wherein the visual characteristic of the captured text sequence specified by the received indication is a border.
