Abstract

An attribute selection surface for use with a pen is provided. The pen has an electronically controllable marking device and a sensor. The surface comprises a substrate having information disposed thereon, the information comprising human-readable attribute information and coded data adapted to be sensed by the sensor of the pen.

Claims

1. An attribute selection surface for use with a pen having an electronically controllable marking device and a sensor, the surface comprising a substrate having information disposed thereon, the information comprising:

(a) human-readable attribute information indicative of at least one mark application attribute of the marking device of the pen; and

(b) coded data adapted to be sensed by the sensor of the pen, at least some of the coded data being at least partially indicative of;

(i) at least one mark application attribute of the marking device of the pen; and

(ii) a position on the attribute selection surface,

wherein at least some of the coded data disposed within a particular area of the substrate is at least partially indicative of the same mark application attribute indicated by the human-readable attribute information disposed within that same area.

2. The attribute selection surface of claim 1 wherein the coded data comprises a plurality of tags.

3. The attribute selection surface of claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the mark application attribute comprises one or more of the following mark attributes:

(a) colour;

(b) stroke width;

(c) stroke style;

(d) hue;

(e) texture;

(f) color texture;

(g) opacity texture;

(h) nib shape;

(i) varying stroke style with;

(i) time;

(ii) space;

(iii) location;

or

(iv) tilt;

(j) simulated physics of a nib, ink, paper, brush, paint and canvas comprising one or more of;

(i) transfer of ink or paint from nib or brush to paper or canvas;

(ii) striated brush stroke;

(iii) layering of strokes;

(iv) diffusion;

(v) viscosity;

(vi) mixing; and

(vii) a Kubelka-Munk color model;

(k) simulated lighting comprising one or more of;

(i) light source direction and color;

(ii) color physics of media; and

(iii) layering topography;

(l) simulating drawing, painting and writing implements including one or more of;

(i) pen;

(ii) ball-point;

(iii) calligraphy;

(iv) pencil;

(v) graphite;

(vi) color;

(vii) charcoal;

(viii) oil paint;

(ix) water color;

(x) crayon; and

(xi) pastel.

4. The attribute selection surface of claim 3 wherein the mark application attribute of varying style with time comprises an attribute which varies one or more of the following with time:

(a) stroke width; and

(b) opacity.

5. The attribute selection surface of claim 3 wherein the mark application attribute of varying style with space comprises an attribute which varies one or more of the following with space:

(a) “

reveal”

image;

(b) “

checkered paint”

;

(c) dashed line;

(d) rainbow colors; and

(e) “

image hose.”

6. The attribute selection surface of claim 3 wherein the mark application attribute of varying style with location comprises an attribute which varies one or more of the following with location:

(a) whether the marking nib is on or off; and

(b) whether the marking nib is applying a specific style or a current style.

7. The attribute selection surface of claim 3 wherein the mark application attribute of varying style with tilt comprises varying the 3D nib shape of the marking device in a manner consistent with the tilt of the pen.
