Abstract

A system and method for updating a sleep identifier (SLPID) of a mobile station (MS) in a broadband wireless access (BWA) communication system having a sleep mode in which there is no transmission data and an awake mode in which there is transmission data. Upon recognizing a need to update an SLPID allocated to an MS in the sleep mode in the initial phase of the sleep mode, a base station (BS) reallocates a new SLPID to be allocated to the MS and transmits SLPID update information to the MS. Upon receiving the SLPID update information for its current SLPID during the sleep mode, the MS updates its current SLPID with the reallocated SLPID according to the received update information.

Claims

1. A method for updating a sleep identifier (SLPID) of a mobile station (MS) in a broadband wireless access (BWA) communication system having a sleep mode in which there is no transmission data and an awake mode in which there is transmission data, the sleep mode having a sleep interval for which data reception is impossible and a listening interval for which data reception is possible, the method comprising the steps of:

recognizing a need to update a SLPID allocated to a MS in the sleep mode in the initial phase of the sleep mode;

reallocating, by a base station (BS), a new SLPID to the MS;

transmitting SLPID update information to the MS;

upon receiving the SLPID update information during the sleep mode, updating, by the MS, its current SLPID with the reallocated SLPID according to the received SLPID update information.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the BS transmits the SLPID update information through a ranging response (RNG-RSP) message.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the BS transmits the SLPID update information through a traffic indication (TRF-IND) message.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the BS transmits the SLPID update information through a sleep response (SLP-RSP) message.

5. A method for updating, by a base station (BS), a sleep identifier (SLPID) allocated to a mobile station (MS) in a broadband wireless access (BWA) communication system having a sleep mode in which there is no transmission data and an awake mode in which there is transmission data, the sleep mode having a listening interval for which data reception is possible, the method comprising the steps of:

determining if it is necessary to update a SLPID of a MS in the sleep mode;

identifying a SLPID allocable to the MS, if it is necessary to update the SLPID of the MS;

creating SLPID update information including the identified SLPID; and

transmitting the SLPID update information to the MS.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the step of determining if it is necessary to update the SLPID of the MS in the sleep mode comprises the step of determining if there is an empty SLPID allocable to the MS in a total SLPID list managed by the BS.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the empty SLPID is an SLPID returned to the BS, after a particular MS using the SLPID, which was previously allocated from the BS, transitions to an awake mode.

8. The method of claim 5, wherein the step of identifying the SLPID allocable to the MS comprises the step of selecting a lowest one of unused SLPIDs between a lowest SLPID allocable to the MS and a current SLPID allocated to the MS.

9. The method of claim 5, wherein the BS transmits the SLPID update information by pairing current SLPID information allocated to the MS and SLPID information to be newly allocated to the MS.

10. The method of claim 5, wherein the SLPID update information is transmitted in a ranging response (RNG-RSP) message in response to a ranging request of the MS.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the BS includes the SLPID update information in the RNG-RSP message only when it is necessary to update the SLPID of the MS.

12. The method of claim 5, wherein the SLPID update information is transmitted in a traffic indication (TRF-IND) message for indicating the presence of packet data to be transmitted from the BS to the MS during the listening interval.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the TRF-IND message includes an SLPID update parameter in the form of Type/Length/Value (TLV), the SLPID update parameter including SLPID information currently used by the MS and SLPID information to be newly allocated to the MS.

14. The method of claim 12, wherein the TRF-IND message has a traffic indicator set to a negative indicator and an SLPID update indicator set to a positive indicator for the MS requiring SLPID update.

15. The method of claim 12, wherein the TRF-IND message has a traffic indicator set to a negative indicator and an SLPID update indicator set to a negative indicator when there is no data traffic to be transmitted to the MS and there is no need for SLPID update.

16. The method of claim 12, wherein the TRF-IND message has a traffic indicator set to a positive indicator when there is no need for SLPID update for the MS and there is data traffic to be transmitted to the MS.

17. The method of claim 5, wherein the SLPID update information is transmitted in a sleep response (SLP-RSP) message in response to a sleep request of the MS.

18. A method for updating a sleep identifier (SLPID), by a mobile station (MS), in a broadband wireless access (BWA) communication system having a sleep mode in which there is no transmission data and an awake mode in which there is transmission data, the sleep mode having a sleep interval for which data reception is impossible and a listening interval for which data reception is possible, the method comprising the steps of:

receiving a predetermined indication message including an SLPID update indicator;

checking SLPID update information included in the received indication message; and

updating a current SLPID with a new SLPID according to the SLPID update information.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the predetermined indication message is a ranging response (RNG-RSP) message.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the MS receives the RNG-RSP message, and if the RNG-RSP message includes an SLPID update parameter, the MS updates its SLPID with a newly allocated SLPID according to the SLPID update parameter.

21. The method of claim 18, wherein the predetermined indication message is a traffic indication (TRF-IND) message.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the MS receives the TRF-IND message, and identifies if data traffic transmitted thereto and if it is necessary to update an SLPID allocated thereto through an SLPID bitmap of the TRF-IND message.

23. The method of claim 21, wherein the MS identifies if there is data traffic according to a set value of its traffic indicator in an SLPID bitmap of the TRF-IND message, and transitions to the awake mode, upon identifying the data traffic.

24. The method of claim 21, wherein the MS determines if there is data traffic according to a set value of its traffic indicator in an SLPID bitmap of the TRF-IND message, and updates its SLPID according to a set value of an SLPID update indicator in the TRF-IND message, upon recognizing the absence of data traffic.

25. The method of claim 21, wherein the MS checks SLPID information allocated thereto through Type/Length/Value (TLV) of the TRF-IND message, and updates its SLPID according to the SLPID information.

26. The method of claim 21, wherein the MS identifies if there is data traffic according to a set value of its traffic indicator in an SLPID bitmap of the TRF-IND message, checks SLPID information newly allocated thereto through SLPID update information included in the TRF-IND message in the form of Type/Length/Value (TLV), upon recognizing the absence of data traffic, and updates its SLPID according to the information.

27. The method of claim 21, wherein the MS determines if there is information matching with its SLPID from higher bits of the SLPID update information included in the TRF-IND message, and if there is matching information, updates its SLPID with an SLPID newly allocated thereto from lower bits.

28. The method of claim 18, wherein the predetermined indication message is a sleep response (SLP-RSP) message.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein the MS receives the SLP-RSP message during the sleep mode operation, and updates its SLPID with an SLPID newly allocated thereto through the SLP-RSP message.

30. A system for updating a sleep identifier (SLPID) of a mobile station (MS) in a broadband wireless access (BWA) communication system having a sleep mode in which there is no transmission data and an awake mode in which there is transmission data, the sleep mode having a sleep interval for which data reception is impossible and a listening interval for which data reception is possible, the system comprising:

an MS; and

a base station (BS) for recognizing that it is necessary to update an SLPID allocated to the MS in the sleep mode in an initial phase of the sleep mode, reallocating a new SLPID to the MS, and transmitting the SLPID update information to the corresponding MS,

wherein the MS receives the SLPID update information from the BS, and updates its current SLPID with the reallocated SLPID according to the SLPID update information.

31. The system of claim 30, wherein the BS recognizes that it is necessary to update the SLPID for the MS, when there is at east one SLPID allocable to MSs in a total SLPID list managed by the BS.

32. The system of claim 31, wherein the at least one empty SLPID is an SLPID returned to the BS, after a particular MS using the SLPID, which was previously allocated from the BS, transitions to the awake mode.

33. The system of claim 30, wherein the BS selects a least one of the at least one empty SLPID between a lowest SLPID allocable to the MS and a current SLPID allocated to the MS, and allocates the selected SLPID as the new SLPID.

34. The system of claim 31, wherein the BS transmits the SLPID update information by pairing current SLPID information allocated to the MS and SLPID information to be newly allocated to the MS.

35. The system of claim 30, wherein the BS transmits the SLPID update information through a ranging response (RNG-RSP) message.

36. The system of claim 30, wherein the BS transmits the SLPID update information through a traffic indication (TRF-IND) message.

37. The system of claim 36, wherein the BS creates the TRF-IND message in which a traffic indicator is set to a negative indicator and an SLPID update indicator is set to a positive indicator, if it is necessary to update the SLPID for the MS.

38. The system of claim 36, wherein the BS creates the TRF-IND message in which a traffic indicator is set to a negative indicator and an SLPID update indicator is set to a negative indicator, if there is no data traffic to be transmitted to the MS and there is no need for SLPID update.

39. The system of claim 36, wherein the BS creates the TRF-IND message in which a traffic indicator is set to a positive indicator, if there is no need for SLPID update for the MS and there is data traffic to be transmitted to the MS.

40. The system of claim 36, wherein the MS identifies if there is data traffic through its traffic indicator in the TRF-IND message, and transitions to the awake mode, upon identifying the data traffic.

41. The system of claim 36, wherein the MS determines if information matches with its SLPID from higher bits of the SLPID update information included in the TRF-IND message, and if there is matching information, updates its SLPID with an SLPID newly allocated thereto from lower bits.

42. The system of claim 30, wherein the BS transmits the SLPID update information through a sleep response (SLP-RSP) message.

43. The system of claim 42, wherein the BS instructs the MS to transition to the awake mode before transmitting the SLP-RSP message to the MS.
