Abstract

The present invention provides a method for transmitting time-sensitive packet data over a network in which multiple devices belonging to a defined set communicate with each other. The method includes receiving at least one first packet containing voice data, processing the at least one first packet using a real-time packet-enabled stack to form at least one second packet, and providing the at least one second packet to a synchronous controller for transmission over the network.

Claims

1. A method for transmitting time-sensitive packet data over a network in which multiple devices belonging to a defined set communicate with each other, the method comprising:

receiving at least one first packet containing voice data;

processing the at least one first packet using a real-time packet-enabled stack to form at least one second packet; and

providing the at least one second packet to a synchronous controller for transmission over the network.

2. The method of claim 1, where in receiving the at least one first packet comprises receiving the at least one first packet from a telephony application.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein receiving the at least one first packet from the telephony application comprises receiving at least one first packet conforming to a Voice over Internet Protocol.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein processing the at least one first packet using the real-time packet-enabled stack comprises processing the at least one first packet using at least one of a Real-Time Transport Protocol stack, a User Datagram Protocol stack, an Internet Protocol stack, and a Point-to-Point Protocol stack.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein providing the at least one second packet to the synchronous controller comprises providing the at least one second packet to a synchronous controller in a baseband stack.

6. The method of claim 1, comprising transmitting a signal based upon the at least one second packet provided to the synchronous controller over a wireless network.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein transmitting the signal based upon the at least one second packet over the wireless network comprises transmitting the signal based upon the at least one second packet over the wireless network in an Industrial, Scientific, and Medical frequency band.

8. The method of claim 6, wherein transmitting the signal based upon the at least one second packet over the wireless network comprises transmitting the signal based upon the at least one second packet over a Bluetooth network using a Bluetooth radio.

9. A method for transmitting voice packet data over a wireless network in which multiple Bluetooth-enabled devices within a defined set communicate with each other by sending messages to and from a master device within the set, the method comprising:

receiving at least one packet containing voice data;

processing the at least one packet using a real-time packet-enabled stack conforming to a Bluetooth standard to form at least one second packet; and

providing the at least one packet to a synchronous controller in a Bluetooth stack for transmission over the wireless network.

10. The method of claim 9, where in receiving the at least one first packet comprises receiving the at least one first packet from a telephony application.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein receiving the at least one first packet from the telephony application comprises receiving at least one first packet conforming to a Voice over Internet Protocol.

12. The method of claim 9, wherein processing the at least one first packet using the real-time packet-enabled stack comprises processing the at least one first packet using at least one of a Real-Time Transport Protocol stack, a User Datagram Protocol stack, an Internet Protocol stack, and a Point-to -Point Protocol stack.

13. The method of claim 9, wherein providing the at least one second packet to the synchronous controller comprises providing the at least one second packet to a synchronous controller in a baseband stack of the Bluetooth stack.

14. The method of claim 9, comprising transmitting a signal based upon the at least one second packet provided to the synchronous controller over a wireless Bluetooth network.

15. A method for receiving time-sensitive packet data from a first network in which multiple devices belonging to a defined set communicate with each other, the method comprising:

receiving at least one packet containing voice data from the first network;

providing the at least one packet to a synchronous controller; and

processing the at least one packet using a real-time packet-enabled stack.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein receiving the at least one packet from the first network comprises receiving the at least one packet from a first wireless network.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein receiving the at least one packet from the first wireless network comprises receiving the at least one packet from the first wireless network in an Industrial, Scientific, and Medical frequency band.

18. The method of claim 16, wherein receiving the at least one packet over the first wireless network comprises receiving the at least one packet from a Bluetooth network using a Bluetooth radio.

19. The method of claim 16, wherein providing the at least one packet to the synchronous controller comprises providing the at least one packet to the synchronous controller in a Bluetooth stack.

20. The method of claim 16, wherein processing the at least one packet using the real-time packet-enabled stack comprises processing the at least one packet using at least one of a Real-Time Transport Protocol stack, a User Datagram Protocol stack, an Internet Protocol stack, and a Point-to-Point Protocol stack.

21. The method of claim 16, comprising relaying the at least one packet to a second network.

The method of claim 21, wherein relaying the at least one packet to the second network comprises relaying the at least one packet to at least one of a Bluetooth network, a local area network, a wide area network, the World Wide Web, an Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) network, an Intranet, a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), a plain old telephone service (POTS), a cellular telephone network, and a satellite network.

23. A method for receiving voice packet data from a first wireless network in which multiple Bluetooth-enabled devices within a defined set communicate with each other by sending messages to and from a master device within the set, the method comprising:

receiving at least one packet containing voice data from the first network;

providing the at least one packet to a synchronous controller in a Bluetooth stack; and

processing the at least one packet using a real-time packet-enabled stack.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein receiving the at least one packet over the first wireless network comprises receiving the at least one packet from the first wireless network using a Bluetooth radio.

25. The method of claim 23, wherein processing the at least one packet using the real-time packet-enabled stack comprises processing the at least one packet using at least one of a Real-Time Transport Protocol stack, a User Datagram Protocol stack, an Internet Protocol stack, and a Point-to-Point Protocol stack.

26. The method of claim 23, comprising relaying the at least one packet to a second network.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein relaying the at least one packet to the second network comprises relaying the at least one packet to at least one of a Bluetooth network, a local area network, a wide area network, the World Wide Web, an Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) network, an Intranet, a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), a plain old telephone service (POTS), a cellular telephone network, and a satellite network.
