Apparatus for delivering oxygen to a patient undergoing a medical procedure
First Claim
1. Medical oxygen-delivery apparatus comprising an oxygen-delivery manifold having an oxygen-delivery flow path, a fixed-size-orifice flow restrictor, and a variable-size-orifice flow restrictor, wherein the oxygen-delivery flow path includes a flow-path inlet fluidly-connectable to a source of pressurized oxygen and a flow-path outlet fluidly-connectable to a cannula disposable on the face of a patient, wherein the fixed-size-orifice flow restrictor is disposed in the flow path downstream of the flow-path inlet, and wherein the variable-size-orifice flow restrictor is disposed in the flow path downstream of the fixed-size-orifice flow restrictor.

Abstract
Disclosed is an oxygen delivery apparatus constructed from an oxygen delivery manifold, a respiratory cannula, and a host controller. The host controller contains an oxygen delivery program and accepts a respiration input regarding whether the patient is inhaling or exhaling, and whether the patient is breathing orally or nasally. The oxygen delivery program regulates the flow rate of oxygen based in part upon the respiration input provided. A first rates is used when the patient is inhaling and exhaling orally, a second rate is used when the patient is inhaling nasally, and a third rate is used when the patient is exhaling nasally.

5. A medical-effector-system procedure room unit comprising a procedure-room-unit host controller which contains an oxygen delivery program which performs the steps of:
- controlling the delivery of oxygen at a predetermined continuous first rate to at least one respiratory-gas-delivery oral prong of a cannula assembly operatively connected to a patient, when the patient is determined to be inhaling and exhaling through the mouth;
controlling the delivery of oxygen at a predetermined second rate to at least one respiratory-gas-delivery nasal prong of the cannula assembly when the patient is determined to be breathing through the nose and when the patient is determined to be inhaling; and
controlling the delivery of oxygen at a predetermined third rate to the at-least-one respiratory-gas-delivery nasal prong when the patient is determined to be breathing through the nose and when the patient is determined to be exhaling, wherein the second rate is higher than the third rate. - View Dependent Claims (6)
