Abstract

A method for adaptive power control in a mobile communication system (100) determines (120) whether an RF loading factor (110) is greater than a threshold value. If the RF loading factor is above the threshold value, the method reduces call quality (140). Next, a determination is made whether the RF loading factor is below a second threshold value (150). If the RF loading factor is below the second threshold value, the call quality of the mobile communication system is increased (160).

Claims

1. In a mobile communication system, an adaptive power control method comprising the steps of:

determining by a network unit of the mobile communication system whether an RF loading factor is greater than a threshold value;

determining whether network resources are available for handling increased call loading; and

if network resources are available, dynamically reducing a call quality to increase call loading.

2. In a mobile communication system, the adaptive power control method as claimed in claim 1, wherein there is further included a step of measuring by the network unit the RF loading factor.

3. In a mobile communication system, the adaptive power control method as claimed in claim 2, wherein the network unit includes at least one of:

a base station; and

a base station controller.

4. In a mobile communication system, the adaptive power control method as claimed in claim 3, wherein the step of dynamically reducing call quality includes steps of:

increasing by the network unit a frame erasure rate (FER); and

increasing power gain for signaling messages by the network unit.

5. In a mobile communication system, the adaptive power control method as claimed in claim 3, wherein the step of dynamically reducing call quality includes a step of decreasing a maximum transmit power on a mobile link by the network unit.

6. In a mobile communication system, the adaptive power control method as claimed in claim 3, wherein the step of dynamically reducing the call quality includes a step of decreasing by a network unit a power control sub-channel gain to a mobile station.

7. In a mobile communication system, the adaptive power control method as claimed in claim 3, wherein the step of dynamically reducing the call quality includes a step of decreasing by the network unit an initial transmit power on at least one of:

a mobile link for a new call; and

a soft handoff mobile link for a new call leg.

8. In a mobile communication system, the adaptive power control method as claimed in claim 3, wherein the step of dynamically reducing the call quality includes a step of adjusting handoff parameters.

9. In a mobile communication system, the adaptive power control method as claimed in claim 1, wherein there is further included a step of setting by a system operator the threshold value.

10. In a mobile communication system, the adaptive power control method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the mobile communication system includes a code division multiple access (CDMA) system.

11. In a mobile communication system, an adaptive power control method comprising the steps of:

determining by a network unit of the mobile communication system whether an RF loading factor is less than or equal to a first threshold value;

if the RF loading factor is less than or equal to the first threshold value, determining by the network unit whether the RF loading factor is less than a second threshold value; and

if the RF loading factor is less than the second threshold value, dynamically increasing a call quality.

12. In a mobile communication system, the adaptive power control method as claimed in claim 11, wherein there is further included a step of measuring by the network unit the RF loading factor.

13. In a mobile communication system, the adaptive power control method as claimed in claim 12, wherein the network unit includes at least one of:

a base station; and

a base station controller.

14. In a mobile communication system, the adaptive power control method as claimed in claim 13, wherein the step of dynamically increasing call quality includes a step of decreasing by the network unit a frame erasure rate (FER).

15. In a mobile communication system, the adaptive power control method as claimed in claim 13, wherein the step of dynamically increasing call quality includes a step of increasing a maximum transmit power on a mobile link by the network unit.

16. In a mobile communication system, the adaptive power control method as claimed in claim 13, wherein the step of dynamically increasing the call quality includes a step of increasing by a network unit a power control sub-channel gain to a mobile station.

17. In a mobile communication system, the adaptive power control method as claimed in claim 13, wherein the step of dynamically increasing the call quality includes a step of increasing by the network unit a transmit power on at least one of:

a mobile link for a new call; and

a soft handoff mobile link for a new call leg.

18. In a mobile communication system, the adaptive power control method as claimed in claim 13, wherein the step of dynamically increasing the call quality includes a step of adjusting handoff parameters.

19. In a mobile communication system, the adaptive power control method as claimed in claim 11, wherein there is further included a step of setting by a system operator the first threshold value.

20. In a mobile communication system, the adaptive power control method as claimed in claim 11, wherein there is further included a step of setting by a system operator the second threshold value.

21. In a mobile communication system, the adaptive power control method as claimed in claim 11, wherein the mobile communication system includes a code division multiple access (CDMA) system.

22. In a mobile communication system, the adaptive power control method as claimed in claim 11, wherein if a mobile station(s) are consuming substantial mobile communication system capacity, there is further include a step of reducing the call quality for the mobile station(s).

23. In a mobile communication system, the adaptive power control method as claimed in claim 11, wherein if a mobile station'"'"'s user has paid a premium there is further included a step of inhibiting decreasing the call quality for the mobile station.

24. In a mobile communication system, an adaptive power control method comprising the steps of:

determining by a network unit of the mobile communication system whether an RF loading factor is greater than a first threshold value;

if the RF loading factor is greater than the first threshold value, dynamically reducing a call quality of the mobile communication system;

if the RF loading factor is less than or equal to the first threshold value, determining whether the RF loading factor is less than a second threshold value; and

if the RF loading factor is less than the second threshold value, dynamically increasing the call quality of the mobile communication system.
