Abstract

The use of compositions containing one or more antimicrobial agents with one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylate buffers to disinfect and/or preserve medical devices is described. Solutions containing one or more antimicrobial agents with one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylate buffers and methods of making and using the same are also described.

Claims

1. A composition comprising:

an effective disinfecting amount of one or more antimicrobial agents and one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylate buffers.

3. The composition of claim 1 or 2 wherein said one or more antimicrobial agents are selected from the group consisting of 1,1′

-hexamethylenebis[5-(p-chlorophenyl)biguanide], water soluble salts of 1,1′

-hexamethylenebis[5-(p-chlorophenyl)biguanide], 1,1′

-hexamethylenebis[5-(2-ethylhexyl)biguanide], water soluble salts of 1,1′

-hexamethylenebis[5-(2-ethylhexyl)biguanide], poly(hexamethylene biguanide), water soluble salts of poly(hexamethylene biguanide), polyquaternium-1, ionene polymers and quaternary ammonium esters

4. The composition of claim 1 or 2 wherein at least one of said one or more antimicrobial agents is 1,1′

-hexamethylenebis[5-(2-ethylhexyl)biguanide] or a water soluble salt of 1,1′

-hexamethylenebis[5-(2-ethylhexyl)biguanide].

5. The composition of claim 1 or 2 wherein said effective disinfecting amount is about 0.000001 to about 5.0 weight percent.

6. The composition of claim 1 or 2 wherein said effective disinfecting amount is about 0.00001 to about 5.0 weight percent.

7. The composition of claim 1 or 2 wherein said effective disinfecting amount is about 0.00003 to about 0.5 weight percent.

8. The composition of claim 1 or 2 wherein said one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylate buffers are of the generalized structure:

9. The composition of claim 8 wherein said one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylated buffers are selected from the group consisting of triethanolamine ethoxylate buffers where x=1-100, y=1-100 and z=1-100.

10. The composition of claim 8 wherein said one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylated buffers are selected from the group consisting of triethanolamine ethoxylate buffers where x=1-50, y=1-50 and z=1-50.

11. The composition of claim 8 wherein said one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylated buffers are selected from the group consisting of triethanolamine ethoxylate buffers where x=1-10, y=1-10 and z=1-10.

12. The composition of claim 8 wherein said one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylated buffers are selected from the group consisting of triethanolamine ethoxylate buffers where x=1-2, y=1-2 and z=1-2.

15. The composition of claim 1 or 2 further comprising one or more tonicity agents.

16. The composition of claim 1 or 2 further comprising one or more tonicity agents selected from the group consisting of zinc chloride, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, dextrose, mannose, glycerin, propylene glycol, calcium chloride and magnesium chloride

17. The composition of claim 1 or 2 further comprising one or more viscosity agents.

18. The composition of claim 1 or 2 further comprising one or more viscosity agents selected from the group consisting of water-soluble cellulose polymers, guar, hydroxyethyl guar, hydroxypropyl guar, hydroxypropylmethyl guar, poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone), poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(ethylene glycol), and poly(ethylene oxide).

19. The composition of claim 1 or 2 further comprising one or more wetting agents.

The composition of claim 1 or 2 further comprising one or more wetting agents selected from the group consisting of poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone), water-soluble cellulose derivatives, poly(ethylene glycol), glycerin, propylene glycol, non-polymeric diols and non-polymeric glycols.

21. The composition of claim 1 or 2 further comprising one or more sequestering agents.

22. The composition of claim 1 or 2 further comprising one or more sequestering agents selected from the group consisting of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, gluconic acid, citric acid, tartaric acid and salts thereof.

23. The composition of claim 1 or 2 further comprising one or more cationic polysaccharides.

24. The composition of claim 1 or 2 further comprising one or more cationic polysaccharides selected from the group consisting of variations of Polyquaternium-10.

25. The composition of claim 1 or 2 further comprising one or more water-soluble carbohydrates.

26. The composition of claim 1 or 2 further comprising one or more carbohydrates selected from the group consisting of monosaccharides, disaccharides, oligosaccharides and polysaccharides.

27. The composition of claim 1 or 2 further comprising one or more buffers other than trialkanolamine alkoxylated buffers.

28. The composition of claim 1 or 2 further comprising one or more buffers selected from the group consisting of citrate buffers, phosphate buffers, borate buffers, tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (Tris) buffers, sodium bicarbonate buffers, Good Buffers, and combinations thereof.

29. The composition of claim 1 or 2 wherein said one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylate buffers are present in about 0.02 to about 3.0 percent by weight based on the total weight of the composition.

30. The composition of claim 1 or 2 further comprising one or more tonicity agents wherein said one or more tonicity agents are present in an amount to provide a final osmotic value of about 200 to about 450 mOsm/kg.

31. A method of producing the composition of claim 1 comprising:

combining an effective disinfecting amount of one or more antimicrobial agents with one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylate buffers.

33. The method of claim 31 or 32 wherein said one or more antimicrobial agents are selected from the group consisting of 1,1′

-hexamethylenebis[5-(p-chlorophenyl)biguanide], water soluble salts of 1,1′

-hexamethylenebis[5-(p-chlorophenyl)biguanide], 1,1′

-hexamethylenebis[5-(2-ethylhexyl)biguanide], water soluble salts of 1,1′

-hexamethylenebis[5-(2-ethylhexyl)biguanide], poly(hexamethylene biguanide), water soluble salts of poly(hexamethylene biguanide), polyquaternium-1, ionene polymers and quaternary ammonium esters.

34. The method of claim 31 or 32 wherein at least one of said one or more antimicrobial agents is 1,1′

-hexamethylenebis[5-(2-ethylhexyl)biguanide] or a water soluble salt of 1,1′

-hexamethylenebis[5-(2-ethylhexyl)biguanide].

35. The method of claim 31 or 32 wherein said effective disinfecting amount is about 0.000001 to about 5.0 weight percent.

36. The method of claim 31 or 32 wherein said effective disinfecting amount is about 0.00001 to about 5.0 weight percent.

37. The method of claim 31 or 32 wherein said effective disinfecting amount is about 0.00003 to about 0.5 weight percent.

38. The method of claim 31 or 32 wherein said one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylate buffers are of the generalized structure:

39. The method of claim 38 wherein said one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylated buffers are selected from the group consisting of triethanolamine ethoxylate buffers where x=1-100, y=1-100 and z=1-100.

40. The method of claim 38 wherein said one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylated buffers are selected from the group consisting of triethanolamine ethoxylate buffers where x=1-50, y=1-50 and z=1-50.

41. The method of claim 38 wherein said one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylated buffers are selected from the group consisting of triethanolamine ethoxylate buffers where x=1-10, y=1-10 and z=1-10.

42. The method of claim 38 wherein said one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylated buffers are selected from the group consisting of triethanolamine ethoxylate buffers where x=1-2, y=1-2 and z=1-2.

43. The method of claim 38 wherein said one or more surfactants are selected from the group consisting of poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) polyethers and poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide) polyethers.

44. The method of claim 38 wherein said one or more surfactants are present at about 0.001 to about 6.0 weight percent.

45. The method of claim 31 or 32 further comprising one or more tonicity agents.

46. The method of claim 31 or 32 further comprising one or more tonicity agents selected from the group consisting of zinc chloride, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, dextrose, mannose, glycerin, propylene glycol, calcium chloride and magnesium chloride.

47. The method of claim 31 or 32 further comprising one or more viscosity agents.

48. The method of claim 31 or 32 further comprising one or more viscosity agents selected from the group consisting of water-soluble cellulose polymers, guar, hydroxyethyl guar, hydroxypropyl guar, hydroxypropylmethyl guar, poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone), poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(ethylene glycol), and poly(ethylene oxide).

49. The method of claim 31 or 32 further comprising one or more wetting agents.

50. The method of claim 31 or 32 further comprising one or more wetting agents selected from the group consisting of poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone), water-soluble cellulose derivatives, poly(ethylene glycol), glycerin, propylene glycol, non-polymeric diols and non-polymeric glycols.

51. The method of claim 31 or 32 further comprising one or more sequestering agents.

52. The method of claim 31 or 32 further comprising one or more sequestering agents selected from the group consisting of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, gluconic acid, citric acid, tartaric acid and salts thereof.

53. The method of claim 31 or 32 further comprising one or more cationic polysaccharides.

54. The method of claim 31 or 32 further comprising one or more cationic polysaccharides selected from the group consisting of variations of Polyquaternium-10.

55. The method of claim 31 or 32 further comprising one or more water-soluble carbohydrates.

56. The method of claim 31 or 32 further comprising one or more carbohydrates selected from the group consisting of monosaccharides, disaccharides, oligosaccharides and polysaccharides.

57. The method of claim 31 or 32 further comprising one or more buffers other than trialkanolamine alkoxylate buffers.

58. The method of claim 31 or 32 further comprising one or more buffers selected from the group consisting of citrate buffers, phosphate buffers, borate buffers, tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (Tris) buffers, sodium bicarbonate buffers, Good Buffers, and combinations thereof.

59. The method of claim 31 or 32 wherein said one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylate buffers are present in about 0.02 to about 3.0 percent by weight based on the total weight of the composition.

60. The method of claim 31 or 32 further comprising one or more tonicity agents wherein said one or more tonicity agents are present in an amount to provide a final osmotic value of about 200 to about 450 mOsm/kg.

61. A solution comprising one or more compositions of claim 1.

63. The solution of claim 61 or 62 wherein said one or more antimicrobial agents are selected from the group consisting of 1,1′

-hexamethylenebis[5-(p-chlorophenyl)biguanide], water soluble salts of 1,1′

-hexamethylenebis[5-(p-chlorophenyl)biguanide], 1,1′

-hexamethylenebis[5-(2-ethylhexyl)biguanide], water soluble salts of 1,1′

-hexamethylenebis[5-(2-ethylhexyl)biguanide], poly(hexamethylene biguanide), water soluble salts of poly(hexamethylene biguanide), polyquaternium-1, ionene polymers and quaternary ammonium esters.

64. The solution of claim 61 or 62 wherein at least one of said one or more antimicrobial agents is 1,1′

-hexamethylenebis[5-(2-ethylhexyl)biguanide] or a water soluble salt of 1,1′

-hexamethylenebis[5-(2-ethylhexyl)biguanide].

65. The solution of claim 61 or 62 wherein said effective disinfecting amount is about 0.000001 to about 5.0 weight percent.

66. The solution of claim 61 or 62 wherein said effective disinfecting amount is about 0.00001 to about 5.0 weight percent.

67. The solution of claim 61 or 62 wherein said effective disinfecting amount is about 0.00003 to about 0.5 weight percent.

68. The solution of claim 61 or 62 wherein said one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylate buffers are of the generalized structure:

69. The solution of claim 68 wherein said one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylated buffers are selected from the group consisting of triethanolamine ethoxylate buffers where x=1-100, y=1-100 and z=1-100.

70. The solution of claim 68 wherein said one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylated buffers are selected from the group consisting of triethanolamine ethoxylate buffers where x=1-50, y=1-50 and z=1-50.

71. The solution of claim 68 wherein said one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylated buffers are selected from the group consisting of triethanolamine ethoxylate buffers where x=1-10, y=1-10 and z=1-10.

72. The solution of claim 68 wherein said one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylated buffers are selected from the group consisting of triethanolamine ethoxylate buffers where x=1-2, y=1-2 and z=1-2.

73. The solution of claim 68 wherein said one or more surfactants are selected from the group consisting of poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) polyethers and poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide) polyethers.

74. The solution of claim 68 wherein said one or more surfactants are present at about 0.001 to about 6.0 weight percent.

75. The solution of claim 61 or 62 further comprising one or more tonicity agents.

76. The solution of claim 61 or 62 further comprising one or more tonicity agents selected from the group consisting of zinc chloride, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, dextrose, mannose, glycerin, propylene glycol, calcium chloride and magnesium chloride.

77. The solution of claim 61 or 62 further comprising one or more viscosity agents.

The solution of claim 61 or 62 further comprising one or more viscosity agents selected from the group consisting of water-soluble cellulose polymers, guar, hydroxyethyl guar, hydroxypropyl guar, hydroxypropylmethyl guar, poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone), poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(ethylene glycol), and poly(ethylene oxide).

79. The solution of claim 61 or 62 further comprising one or more wetting agents.

The solution of claim 61 or 62 further comprising one or more wetting agents selected from the group consisting of poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone), water-soluble cellulose derivatives, poly(ethylene glycol), glycerin, propylene glycol, non-polymeric diols and non-polymeric glycols.

81. The solution of claim 61 or 62 further comprising one or more sequestering agents.

82. The solution of claim 61 or 62 further comprising one or more sequestering agents selected from the group consisting of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, gluconic acid, citric acid, tartaric acid and salts thereof.

83. The solution of claim 61 or 62 further comprising one or more cationic polysaccharides.

84. The solution of claim 61 or 62 further comprising one or more cationic polysaccharides selected from the group consisting of variations of Polyquaternium-10.

85. The solution of claim 61 or 62 further comprising one or more water-soluble carbohydrates.

86. The solution of claim 61 or 62 further comprising one or more carbohydrates selected from the group consisting of monosaccharides, disaccharides, oligosaccharides and polysaccharides.

87. The solution of claim 61 or 62 further comprising one or more buffers other than trialkanolamine alkoxylate buffers.

88. The solution of claim 61 or 62 further comprising one or more buffers selected from the group consisting of citrate buffers, phosphate buffers, borate buffers, tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (Tris) buffers, sodium bicarbonate, Good Buffers, and combinations thereof.

89. The solution of claim 61 or 62 wherein said one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylate buffers are present in about 0.02 to about 3.0 percent by weight based on the total weight of the composition.

90. The solution of claim 61 or 62 further comprising one or more tonicity agents wherein said one or more tonicity agents are present in an amount to provide a final osmotic value of about 200 to about 450 mOsm/kg.

91. A method of using the solution of claim 61 or 62 comprising:

contacting a contact lens with said solution for a period of time suitable to reduce or eliminate a microbial burden on said contact lens.

92. A method of using the solution of claim 61 or 62 comprising:

contacting a medical device with said solution for a period of time suitable to reduce or eliminate a microbial burden on said medical device.

2. A composition comprising:

an effective disinfecting amount of one or more antimicrobial agents, one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylate buffers and one or more surfactants.

13. The composition of claim 2 wherein said one or more surfactants are selected from the group consisting of poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) polyethers and poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide) polyethers.

14. The composition of claim 2 wherein said one or more surfactants are present at about 0.001 to about 6.0 weight percent.

32. A method of producing the composition of claim 2 comprising:

combining an effective disinfecting amount of one or more antimicrobial agents, one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylate buffers and one or more surfactants.

62. A solution comprising one or more compositions of claim 2

93. A composition for treating contact lenses comprising:

an effective amount of one or more antimicrobial agents and one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylate buffers.

99. A solution comprising one or more compositions of claim 93, 94, 95, 96, 97 or 98.

94. A composition for treating contact lenses comprising:

an effective amount of one or more antimicrobial agents, one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylate buffers and one or more surfactants.

95. A composition for treating contact lenses comprising:

a disinfecting amount of one or more antimicrobial agents and one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylate buffers.

96. A composition for treating contact lenses comprising:

a disinfecting amount of one or more antimicrobial agents, one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylate buffers and one or more surfactants.

97. A composition for treating contact lenses comprising:

a preservative amount of one or more antimicrobial agents and one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylate buffers.

98. A composition for treating contact lenses comprising:

a preservative amount of one or more antimicrobial agents, one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylate buffers and one or more surfactants.

100. An improved composition for treating contact lenses the improvement comprising:

a preservative amount of one or more antimicrobial agents and one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylate buffers.

101. An improved composition for treating contact lenses the improvement comprising:

a preservative amount of one or more antimicrobial agents, one or more trialkanolamine alkoxylate buffers and one or more surfactants.
