Abstract

An implanted heart monitor includes sensors that measure various aspects of the heart failure patient'"'"'s heart. A remote heart monitoring system connects the implanted heart monitor to a care provider, such as a physician. The data provided by the implanted heart monitor permits the care provider to obtain valuable data on the heart in order to make health care decisions affecting the heart failure patient'"'"'s treatment. In many cases, the measurement of core body temperature and other patient data will enable the care provider to alter the patient'"'"'s treatment to address the patient'"'"'s condition. The implanted heart monitor can communicate over a wireless communication link with an external monitor. The implanted heart monitor may be implemented as part of a pacing device (i.e., pace maker) or may be a separate unit devoted to monitoring functions. The external monitor communicates with a monitoring station over a communication link. The monitoring station can operate as a centralized data collection unit, collecting data from multiple external monitors and multiple implanted heart monitors. Various other aspects of a heart failure patient'"'"'s heart and/or body can be monitored, such as heart rate, blood pH levels, blood CO₂ levels, and any other indications of the heart failure patient'"'"'s activity. Various predetermined thresholds may be set to trigger alarms and/or data reports.

Claims

1. An implantable heart monitor, comprising:

a. a blood pH level sensor for determining a blood pH level of a patient;

b. a bodily activity sensor for determining a bodily activity level of said patient;

c. a processing unit operatively configured to process data representative of said blood pH level and said bodily activity level of said patient, said processing unit further configured for calculating a relationship between said blood pH level and said bodily activity level and for generating an alarm message in response to a determination that said relationship is outside of a predefined acceptable range; and

d. a transmission unit for transmitting data representative of said blood pH level, said bodily activity level and an alarm message to said external monitor.

2. The implantable heart monitor of claim 1, wherein said implantable heart monitor is of a configuration that allows said external monitor to be implanted in said patient'"'"'s body.

3. The implantable heart monitor of claim 1, wherein said bodily activity sensor determines said bodily activity level by sensing a patient ventilation rate and by correlating said patient ventilation rate into said bodily activity level.

4. The implantable heart monitor of claim 1, wherein said pH level sensor determines a core body temperature by determining said blood pH level and correlating said blood pH level into said core body temperature.

6. The implantable heart monitor of claim 1, further comprising a pacing unit for pacing at least one of a patient'"'"'s heart chambers.

5. The implantable heart monitor of claim 5, wherein said transmission unit is further operative to transmit said core body temperature.

7. A heart monitoring system, comprising:

a blood pH level sensor for determining a blood pH level of a patient;

a bodily activity sensor for determining a bodily activity level of the patient; and

a heart monitor operatively connected to the blood pH level sensor and the bodily activity sensor and configured to receive and process data representative of the blood pH level and the bodily activity level, wherein said data representative of blood pH level is processed and correlated into a core body temperature;

the heart monitor further being configures to generate an alarm message upon determination that a relationship between the core body temperature and the bodily activity level is outside of a predetermined range.

8. The heart monitoring system of claim 7, wherein the blood pH level sensor is of a configuration that allows the blood pH level sensor to be implanted in the patient'"'"'s body.

9. The heart monitoring system of claim 7, wherein the bodily activity sensor is of a configuration that allows the bodily activity sensor to be implanted in the patient'"'"'s body.

10. The heart monitoring system of claim 7, wherein the heart monitor is of a configuration that allows the external monitor to be implanted in the patient'"'"'s body.

11. The heart monitoring system of claim 7, wherein the heart monitor is of a configuration that allows the heart monitor to be outside the patient'"'"'s body and wherein the heart monitoring system includes a wireless communication link that allows wireless communications between the temperature sensor, bodily activity sensor and heart monitor.

12. The heart monitoring system of claim 7, wherein the heart monitor is operative to determine a relationship between the core body temperature and the bodily activity level.

13. The heart monitoring system of claim 12, wherein the heart monitor is further operative to determine the slope of a two-dimensional representation of the relationship between the core body temperature and the bodily activity level.

14. The heart monitoring system of claim 12, wherein the heart monitor is further operative to transmit an alarm to a remote monitoring station, when the relationship between the core body temperature and the bodily activity level is outside of a predetermined acceptable range.

15. The heart monitoring system of claim 7, wherein the heart monitor is further operative transmit the core body temperature and the bodily activity level to a remote monitoring station.

16. An implantable heart monitor, comprising:

a. a CO₂ level sensor for determining a blood CO₂ level in a patient'"'"'s blood;

b. a bodily activity sensor for determining a bodily activity level of said patient;

c. a transmission unit for transmitting said blood CO₂ level and said bodily activity level to an external monitor;

d. a processor operatively connected to the CO₂ level sensor, the bodily activity sensor and the transmission unit, wherein the processor is configured to calculate a relationship between said blood CO₂ level and said bodily activity level and generate an alarm message in response to a determination that said relationship is outside of a predefined acceptable range;

wherein said transmission unit is further operative to transmit said alarm message to said external monitor.

17. The implantable heart monitor of claim 16, wherein said implantable heart monitor is configured to correlate said blood CO₂ level into a core body temperature of said patient.
