1. In the surgical treatment of the human or animal body, a method of controlling excessive bleeding, the method comprising:
- inserting a device into the tissue or organ to be treated, the device comprising an applicator having a source of microwave power, the applicator being in the form of a waveguide for microwave transmission extending to one face of the applicator, and an array of needles arranged so as to extend from said one face of the applicator;
positioning the array of needles so that said one face of the applicator and the array of needles surround a volume of the tissue to be treated, the array of needles serving to confine the microwave energy field formed within the applicator; and
applying microwave energy confined by the needles to the volume of the tissue to be treated.

Abstract
A device for generating localized heating in a selected body tissue includes an applicator having a source of microwave radiation and an array of retractable needles arranged so as to extend from one face of the applicator and, in operation, to confine the irradiated microwave energy field emanating from the applicator. The device has applications for controlling excessive bleeding from severed tissue during surgical procedures.
