Configurable system for alerting caregivers
First Claim
1. A system for alerting caregivers carrying wireless communication devices of alarm conditions associated with pieces of equipment in a healthcare facility, the system comprising at least one computer device that is remote from the pieces of equipment and that receives data from the pieces of equipment, a display screen associated with the computer device, the computer device being operable to display at least one template screen on the display screen, the at least one template screen permitting a user to select types of alarms to which designated caregivers are to be notified, the computer device being operable to initiate a communication to the wireless communication device of at least one of the designated caregivers in response to the data received from at least one of the pieces of equipment being indicative of at least one of the types of alarms selected on the at least one template screen.

Abstract
A system that monitors various conditions of a plurality of hospital beds located in different rooms of a healthcare facility is provided. Alternatively or additionally, other types of equipment may be monitored by the system. Various configurations of network interface units that are coupleable to or integrated into a hospital bed are also disclosed. The system receives data from the hospital beds and/or other equipment and initiates a communication to a wireless communication device of at least one designated caregiver in response to the received data being indicative of an alarm condition.

55. A system comprising
at least one computer device coupled to a hospital Ethernet, the hospital Ethernet having at least one wired access point and at least on wireless access point, a hospital bed having associated therewith bed identification (ID) data, a network interface unit (NIU) coupled to the hospital bed via a first data link, the NIU having associated therewith NIU ID data, the NIU having a communications port that is coupleable to the Ethernet via a second data link, the NIU being configured to sense whether the communications port is coupled to the Ethernet via the second data link, wherein if the NIU is coupled to the Ethernet via the second data link then the bed ID data received by the NIU is transmitted by the NIU along with NIU ID data to the Ethernet over the second data link, wherein if the NIU is not coupled to the Ethernet via the second data link then the NIU ID data received by the hospital bed is transmitted wirelessly by the hospital bed to one of the wireless access points of the Ethernet along with the bed ID data.
