Abstract

The present invention is directed to an implantable vascular prosthesis configured for use in a wide range of applications, such as treating aneurysms, maintaining patency in a vessel, and providing controlled delivery of therapeutic agents to a vessel wall. The prosthesis comprises a helical body having a plurality of turns, wherein the proximal and distal edges of the turns of the prosthesis has a pattern that interdigitates when the prosthesis assumes the deployed configuration. The prosthesis optionally may comprise a radially expanding distal portion coupled to the helical body for facilitating placement of the prosthesis within a body vessel.

Claims

1. A vascular prosthesis for implantation in a body vessel, the vascular prosthesis comprising:

a helical section comprising a plurality of cells defining a plurality of turns, each turn having a distal edge and a proximal edge, the helical section configured to transition between a contracted delivery configuration, in which adjacent turns are wound down onto one another, and a deployed configuration,

wherein cells disposed along the distal edge define a series of crests, cells disposed along the proximal edge define a series of complimentary troughs, and in the deployed configuration the series of crests interdigitate with the series of troughs.

2. The vascular prosthesis of claim 1 wherein, in the deployed configuration, the series of crests is spaced apart from the series of troughs.

3. The vascular prosthesis of claim 1 wherein the helical section comprises a shape memory material.

4. The vascular prosthesis of claim 1 wherein the cells define a multiplicity of openings.

5. The vascular prosthesis of claim 4 wherein at least some of the multiplicity of openings define circular or polygonal openings.

6. The vascular prosthesis of claim 1 wherein the cells have a feature disposed in alignment along a helical axis of the prosthesis.

7. The vascular prosthesis of claim 1 wherein the series of crests has a repetitive pattern and defines a wavelike configuration.

8. The vascular prosthesis of claim 1 wherein the series of crests has a repetitive pattern and defines a zig-zig configuration.

9. The vascular prosthesis of claim 1 further comprising a radially expandable distal anchor portion coupled to a distal end of the helical body.

10. The vascular prosthesis of claim 1 further comprising a therapeutic agent disposed on the helical section.

11. A vascular prosthesis for implantation in a body vessel, the vascular prosthesis comprising:

a helical section comprising a plurality of cells defining a plurality of turns, each turn having a distal edge and a proximal edge, the helical section configured to transition between a contracted delivery configuration and a deployed configuration,

wherein the cells have a feature disposed in alignment along a helical axis of the prosthesis, cells disposed along the distal edge define a series of crests, cells disposed along the proximal edge define a series of complimentary troughs, and in the deployed configuration the series of crests interdigitate with the series of troughs.

12. The vascular prosthesis of claim 11 wherein, in the deployed configuration, the series of crests is spaced apart from the series of troughs.

13. The vascular prosthesis of claim 11 wherein the helical section comprises a shape memory material.

14. The vascular prosthesis of claim 11 wherein the cells define a multiplicity of openings.

15. The vascular prosthesis of claim 14 wherein at least some of the multiplicity of openings define circular or polygonal openings.

16. The vascular prosthesis of claim 11 wherein adjacent turns are wound down onto one another in the contracted delivery configuration.

17. The vascular prosthesis of claim 11 wherein the series of crests has a repetitive pattern and defines a wavelike configuration.

18. The vascular prosthesis of claim 11 wherein the series of crests has a repetitive pattern and defines a zig-zig configuration.

19. The vascular prosthesis of claim 11 further comprising a radially expandable distal anchor portion coupled to a distal end of the helical body.

20. The vascular prosthesis of claim 11 further comprising a therapeutic agent disposed on the helical section.
