Abstract

A bed is provided having a decreased length foot deck to allow the bed to be converted to a chair bed and lowered close to the floor even when the foot deck is in a substantially vertical position. In one embodiment, the bed has a frame assembly, a deck supported on the frame assembly, and a mattress supported on the deck. The deck has a length extending from a head end of the head section to a foot end of the foot section when the deck is in a substantially horizontal position. The mattress has head, seat and foot mattress portions corresponding, respectively, to the head, seat and foot sections of the deck. The mattress has a length extending from a head end of the mattress to a foot end of the mattress when the mattress is in a substantially horizontal position. The length of the mattress is greater than the length of the deck, such that in one embodiment the mattress has a foot end that overhangs and is cantilevered from the edge of the foot deck section.

Claims

1. A hospital bed having a frame assembly, the bed comprising:

a deck supported on the frame assembly, the deck comprising longitudinally spaced head, seat and foot sections angularly movable relative to one another, wherein the deck has a length, D₁, extending from a head end of the head section to a foot end of the foot section when the deck is in a substantially horizontal position; and

,

a mattress supported on the deck and having head, seat and foot mattress portions corresponding, respectively, to the head, seat and foot sections of the deck, the mattress having a length, M₁, extending from a head end of the mattress to a foot end of the mattress when the mattress is in a substantially horizontal position, and wherein D₁ is less than M₁.

2. The bed of claim 1, wherein the foot deck section is pivotally mounted to the bed for movement about a pivot axis between a generally horizontal up position and a generally vertical downwardly extending position, and wherein a length of the foot deck section is constant in the up position and in the downwardly extending position.

3. The bed of claim 2, wherein the foot deck section is pivotally mounted to the seat deck section.

4. The bed of claim 2, wherein the foot section of the mattress has a first extended length when the foot deck section is in the generally horizontal up position, wherein the foot section of the mattress has a second retracted length when the foot deck section is in the downwardly extending position, and wherein the first extended length is greater than the second retracted length.

5. The bed of claim 4, wherein the bed converts to a chair orientation, the first deck section being moveable from a generally horizontal position to a more vertical back-support position in the chair orientation.

6. The bed of claim 1, further comprising a foot board secured to the foot section of the deck.

7. The bed of claim 6, wherein a portion of the foot board that connects to the foot section of the deck extends under the mattress.

8. The bed of claim 1, wherein the mattress is non-inflatable.

9. The bed of claim 1, wherein the foot deck section has a fixed length.

10. A bed that converts to a chair, the bed having a head end and a foot end opposing the head end, the bed comprising:

a frame;

a deck supported on the frame, the deck having a first deck section, a second deck section and a third deck section, wherein the third deck section is pivotably moveable from a generally horizontal position to a substantially vertical position; and

,

an actuator connected at one end to the frame and at the opposing end to the third deck section to adjust the angle of the third deck section with respect to the frame.

11. The bed of claim 10, wherein the third deck section has a fixed length.

12. A bed that converts to a chair, the bed having a head end and a foot end opposing the head end, the bed comprising:

a support deck having a first deck section, a second deck section and a third deck section, the first deck section located adjacent the head end, the third deck section located adjacent the foot end, and the second deck section being between the first deck section and the third deck section, wherein the first deck section is moveable from a generally horizontal position to a more vertical back-support position, and wherein the third deck section is pivotally moveable from a generally horizontal position to a substantially vertical position;

a leg actuator connected to the third deck section, the leg actuator adjusting an angle of the third deck;

a side rail connected to the bed adjacent the third deck section, the side rail moving from a first position at least partially above a patient support surface of the third deck section to a second position at least partially below the patient support surface; and

,

a sensor connected to the bed and sensing when the side rail is not in the first position, wherein the leg actuator is prevented from pivoting the third deck section to the substantially vertical position when the side rail is not in the first position.

13. The bed of claim 12, wherein the third deck section has a fixed length.

14. The bed of claim 12, wherein the third deck section is pivotally connected to the second deck section.

15. A bed that converts to a chair, the bed having a head end and a foot end opposing the head end, the bed comprising:

a support deck having a first deck section, a second deck section and a third deck section, the first deck section located adjacent the head end, the third deck section located adjacent the foot end, and the second deck section being between the first deck section and the third deck section, wherein the first deck section is moveable from a generally horizontal position to a more vertical back-support position, and wherein the third deck section is pivotally moveable from a generally horizontal position to a substantially vertical position;

a leg actuator connected to the third deck section, the leg actuator adjusting an angle of rotation of the third deck;

a side rail connected to the bed adjacent the third deck section, the side rail moving from a first position at least partially above a patient support surface of the third deck section to a second position below the patient support surface; and

,

a sensor connected to the bed and sensing when the third deck section is in the substantially vertical position, the bed precluding the side rail from moving to the second position when the third deck section is in the substantially vertical position.

16. The bed of claim 15, further comprising a mechanical stop connected to a side rail mechanism, the stop precluding the side rail from moving to the second position when the third deck section is in the substantially vertical position.

17. A bed that converts to a chair, the bed having a head end and a foot end opposing the head end, and a first side and a second side opposing the first side, the bed comprising:

a frame; and

,

a deck supported on the frame, the deck having a first deck section, a second deck section and a third deck section, the first deck section located adjacent the head end and being moveable from a generally horizontal position to a more vertical back-support position, the third deck section located adjacent the foot end and having a fixed length, and the second deck section pivotally attached to the frame between the first deck section and the third deck section, the second deck section having a foot end that is moveable upwardly, wherein third deck section is rotatably moveable from a generally horizontal position to a substantially vertical position, and wherein an edge of the third deck section at the foot end of the bed is a distance from a floor supporting the bed when the third deck section is in a substantially vertical position.

18. The bed of claim 17, wherein the bed has actuators connected to the bed to vertically move the deck from a first position located a maximum vertical distance from the floor to second position located a minimum vertical distance from the floor, and wherein when the third deck section is in the substantially vertical position an edge of the third deck section at the foot end of the bed is a distance from the floor supporting the bed.

19. The bed of claim 18, wherein the seat deck in the second position is no greater than 20 inches from the floor.

20. The bed of claim 17, further comprising siderails connected to the third deck section.

21. The bed of claim 17, further comprising a mattress on the deck, the mattress having a foot end that overhangs and is cantilevered from the edge of the third deck section.

22. A bed having a head end and a foot end, the bed comprising:

a frame;

a support deck mounted on the frame and including an upwardly pivoting head deck section, a seat deck section, and a leg deck section; and

,

a foot board connected to the leg deck section of the support deck, wherein the support deck has an expandable width portion to increase the width of the bed.

23. The bed of claim 22, wherein the foot board is removably connected to the leg deck section of the support deck.

24. The bed of claim 22, further comprising a mattress supported on the support deck, wherein the support deck has a length extending from a head end of the head deck section to a foot end of the leg deck section when the support deck is in a substantially horizontal position, and the mattress having a length, M₁, extending from a head end of the mattress to a foot end of the mattress when the mattress is in a substantially horizontal position, and wherein the length of the support deck is less than M₁.

25. The bed of claim 22, wherein the leg deck section is pivotable from a generally horizontal position to a substantially vertical position, and wherein an edge of the leg deck section at a foot end of the bed is a distance from a floor supporting the bed when the leg deck section is in a substantially vertical position.

26. The bed of claim 22, wherein the leg deck section is pivotable from a generally horizontal position to a substantially vertical position to allow a patient to egress off the bed at the foot end of the bed, the leg deck section being prevented from pivoting to the substantially vertical position when the foot board is connected to the leg deck section of the support deck.

27. The bed of claim 26, further comprising a leg actuator connected to the leg deck section to adjust the leg deck section to the substantially vertical position, and a sensor connected to the bed to sense when the foot board is connected to the leg deck section of the support deck, the leg actuator being prevented from pivoting the leg deck section to the substantially vertical position when the foot board is connected to the leg deck section.

28. The bed of claim 22, wherein the foot board has a support member extending in a plane parallel to a plane of the leg deck section, and a foot panel connected to the support member and extending transverse thereto.
