Abstract

A guide for cutting a bone comprising an anterior portion and a distal portion orientated at about a right angle to the anterior portion. The distal portion includes a guiding side, a distal surface at the guiding side, a box-cut shaped opening defined by the guiding side, a plurality of first cutting surfaces disposed at the guiding side at an acute angle relative to the distal surface of the guiding side operable to guide a cutting device to the bone to form chamfer cuts in the bone, and a second cutting surface disposed at the guiding side at at least about a right angle to the distal surface operable to guide a cutting device to the bone to form a posterior cut in the bone.

Claims

1. A guide for cutting a bone comprising:

an anterior portion;

a distal portion orientated at least about a right angle to said anterior portion, said distal portion including;

a guiding side;

a distal surface at said guiding side;

a box-cut shaped opening defined by said guiding side;

a plurality of cutting surfaces defined by said guiding side at an acute angle relative to said distal surface of said guiding side operable to guide a cutting device to the bone to form chamfer cuts in the bone; and

a second cutting surface disposed at said guiding side at at least about a right angle to said distal surface operable to guide a cutting device to the bone to form a posterior cut in the bone.

2. The guide of claim 1, further comprising a raised rim that extends about portions of said guiding side that defines said box-cut shaped opening.

3. The guide of claim 2, wherein said raised rim defines a slot.

4. The guide of claim 1, wherein said anterior portion defines a notch on a side of said anterior portion that abuts the bone when said device is in an operable position about the bone, said notch in alignment with at least one of said cutting surfaces.

5. The guide of claim 1, wherein said guiding side defines an aperture operable to receive a fastening device for securing said guide to the bone.

6. The guide of claim 1, wherein said guiding side defines an aperture operable to receive a fastening device for securing said guide to the bone, said aperture extending through said cutting surfaces.

7. The guide of claim 1, wherein said second cutting surface is at a posterior terminus of said guiding side.

8. The guide of claim 1, wherein said second cutting surface is spaced apart from a posterior terminus of said guiding side.

9. The guide of claim 1, wherein said guiding side includes two of said first cutting surfaces that intersect each other.

10. The guide of claim 1, further comprising a second guiding side spaced apart from said guiding side.

11. The guide of claim 1, wherein said guiding side extends across a left condyle of the bone when the guide is mounted to the bone leaving a right condyle of the bone exposed by said guide.

12. The guide of claim 1, wherein said guiding side extends across a right condyle of the bone when the guide is mounted to the bone leaving a left condyle of the bone exposed by said guide.

13. A guide for cutting bone comprising:

an anterior portion;

a posterior portion including a first posterior flange and a second posterior flange;

a distal portion between said anterior portion and said posterior portion, said distal portion including;

a distal surface;

a first guiding side;

a second guiding side spaced apart from said first guiding side; and

a plurality of cutting surfaces defined by each of said first guiding side and said second guiding side at an acute angle relative to said distal surface of said first and second guiding sides operable to guide a cutting device to the bone to form chamfer cuts in the bone;

a box-cut shaped opening defined by said anterior portion, said first guiding side, said second guiding side, said first posterior flange, and said second posterior flange; and

a cutting device receiver extending between said first posterior flange and said second posterior flange, said receiver including a receptacle operable to receive and guide a cutting device for forming a box cut in the bone.

14. The guide of claim 13, wherein said receptacle defines a plurality of holes having parallel axes, each of said holes operable to receive the cutting device.

15. The guide of claim 13, further comprising a raised rim that extends about portions of said anterior portion that define said box-cut shaped opening.

16. The guide of claim 13, further comprising an aperture at each of said first guiding side and said second guiding side operable to receive a fastening device for securing said guide to the bone.

17. The guide of claim 13, wherein said first guiding side defines two of said cutting surfaces that intersect each other and said second guiding side includes two of said cutting surfaces that intersect each other.

18. The guide of claim 13, wherein said cutting device receiver is a rod that rotates about 90 degrees.

19. The guide of claim 13, wherein said cutting device receiver includes at least one groove at a first end of said receiver.

20. The guide of claim 19, wherein said cutting device receiver includes at least one detent at a second end of said receiver that is opposite said first end.

21. A method for guiding a cutting device to a bone to form chamfer cuts, posterior cuts, and a box cut in the bone, the method comprising:

positioning a cutting guide on the bone such that an anterior portion of the cutting guide abuts an anterior bone surface and a distal portion of the cutting guide abuts a distal bone surface, the distal portion defining a first guiding side and a second guiding side defining a box-cut shaped opening;

cutting chamfer cuts in the bone by directing the bone cutting device along each of a plurality of first cutting surfaces disposed at each of the first guiding side and the second guiding side, the first cutting surfaces disposed at an acute angle relative to a distal surface of the guide;

cutting posterior cuts in the bone by directing the bone cutting device along second cutting surfaces disposed at each of said first guiding side and said second guiding side; and

cutting a box-cut in the bone using a cutting device that cooperates with the first guiding side and the second guiding side at the box-cut shaped opening.

22. A method for forming chamfer cuts and a box cut in a bone, the method comprising:

attaching a cutting guide to the bone;

using the guide to direct a cutting device to the bone to form the chamfer cuts; and

pivoting a cutting member coupled to the guide to form the box cut in the bone.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the box cut is formed with a milling device that cooperates with a cutting device receiver extending between a first guiding side and a second guiding side of the guide.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein the cutting device receiver is a rotatable rod including apertures for receiving the milling device.
