1. A flame spray process for forming a coherent refractory mass on a surface comprising the steps of:
- mixing one or more non-combustible materials with one or more metallic combustible powders and an oxidizer;
igniting the mixture in a combustion chamber so that the combustible particles react in an exothermic manner with the oxidizer and release sufficient heat to form a coherent refractory mass under the action of the heat of combustion; and
projecting said mass from the combustion chamber onto the surface so that the mass adheres durably to that surface; and
permitting the mass to cool and solidify on the surface.

11. Apparatus for forming a coherent refractory mass on a surface, the apparatus comprising:

a combustion chamber adapted to be disposed on a surface;
a first supply line for transporting one or more metallic combustible powders and one or more non-combustible materials to the combustion chamber;
a second supply line for transporting an oxidizer to the combustion chamber; and

25. Apparatus for forming a coherent refractory mass on a surface, the apparatus comprising:

a combustion chamber adapted to be disposed on a surface;
a single supply line for transporting one or more metallic combustible powders, one or more non-combustible materials and air, oxygen or a combination of the two to the combustion chamber; and
an igniter associated with the combustion chamber and operative to ignite the combustible powder and oxidizer in the combustion chamber to cause the metallic combustible powder to react in an exothermic manner with the oxidizer and release sufficient heat to form a refractory mass which is projected from the combustion chamber and against the surface so that the mass adheres durable to the surface. - View Dependent Claims (26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35)

A flame spray composition comprising at least one non-combustible powder and at least one combustible powder wherein when the mixture of the powder is ignited in a combustion chamber in the presence of an oxidizer so that the combustible powder reacts in an exothermic manner with the oxidizer and releases sufficient heat to form a refractory mass which when projected from the combustion chamber onto a surface causes the refractory mass to adhere durably to that surface.
