Abstract

A system and method are described for providing dynamic mobile cache for mobile computing devices. In one embodiment, a cache is created at a server at the time a communication session between the server and a client is initiated. The server then determined whether the client requires the cache. If it is determined the client requires the cache, the server provides the cache to the client.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

creating a cache at a server, wherein the cache is created when a communication session between the server and a client is initiated;

determining whether the client requires the cache; and

providing the cache to the client if the client requires the cache.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the determination of whether the client requires the cache comprises one or more of the following:

sensing a need for the cache at the client, and receiving a request for the cache from the client.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising performing a tune up of the cache prior to providing the cache to the client, wherein the performing of the tune up includes determining whether a predetermined set of threshold is met for providing the cache to the client.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising maintaining the cache at the server if the predetermined set of threshold is not met for providing the cache to the client.

5. The method of claim 1, receiving the cache at the server from the client prior to termination of the session between the server and client.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising managing the cache at the server, wherein the managing of the cache includes one or more of the following:

maintaining a history of a plurality of activities relating to the cache and the client at the server, and selecting from plurality of caching strategies prior to sending the cache to the client.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the plurality of activities comprises system capabilities of the client, performance of the client, prior use of the cache by the client, and nature of tasks being performed by the client.

8. The method of claim 6, wherein the plurality of caching strategies is determined based a number of factors having network resources, bandwidth of the client, and system capabilities of the client.

14. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the server is further to perform a tune up of the cache prior to providing the cache to the client, wherein the performing of the tune up includes determining whether a predetermined set of threshold is met for providing the cache to the client.

15. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the server is further to maintain the cache at the server if the predetermined set of threshold is not met for providing the cache to the client.

9. A method, comprising:

placing a first request for a cache residing at a server, the server in communication with a client, wherein the cache is created at the server when a first communication session is initiated between the server and the client; and

in response to the first request, receiving the cache from the server.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising returning the cache to the server prior to termination of the first session, wherein the returning cache includes contents generated during the first session.

11. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

initiating a second communication session between the server and the client;

placing a second request for the cache residing at the server; and

in response to the second request, receiving the cache from the server, wherein the cache includes the contents generated during the first session.

12. An apparatus, comprising:

a client to initiate a communication session with a server; and

a server in communication with the client, the server to

create a cache, wherein the cache is created when the session between the server and the client is initiated,

determine whether the client requires the cache, and

provide the cache to the client if the client requires the cache.

13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the server is further to sense a need for the cache at the client, and receive a request for the cache from the client.

16. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the server is further to receive the cache from the client prior to termination of the session between the server and client.

17. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the server is further to manage the cache at the server, wherein the managing of the cache includes one or more of the following:

maintaining a history of a plurality of activities relating to the cache and the client at the server, and selecting from plurality of caching strategies prior to sending the cache to the client.

18. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the client comprises a mobile computing system including one or more of the following:

a laptop computer, a pocket computer, a personal digital assistant (PDA), and a telephone.

19. A system, comprising:

a server to

create a cache when a first communication session between the server and a first client is initiated,

determine whether the first client requires the cache, and

provide a first cache from the cache to the first client if the first client requires the cache; and

the first client to

receive the first cache from the cache at the server, and

return the first cache to the server prior to termination of the first session.

20. The system of claim 19, further comprising a second client to initiate a second communication session between the server and the second client, the second client is further to:

receive a second cache from the cache at the server, and

return the second cache to the server prior to termination of the second session.

21. The system of claim 20, wherein the server is further to:

determine whether the second client requires the cache, and

provide the second cache from the cache to the second client if the second client requires the cache.

22. The system of claim 19, wherein the server comprises a computer system, and each of the first and second clients comprise a mobile computing system including one or more of the following:

a laptop computer, a pocket computer, a personal digital assistant (PDA), and a telephone.

23. A machine-readable medium having stored thereon data representing sets of instructions which, when executed by a machine, cause the machine to:

create a cache at a server, wherein the cache is created when a communication session between the server and a client is initiated;

determine whether the client requires the cache; and

provide the cache to the client if the client requires the cache.

24. The machine-readable medium of claim 23, wherein the determination of whether the client requires the cache comprises one or more of the following:

sensing a need for the cache at the client, and receiving a request for the cache from the client.

25. The machine-readable medium of claim 23, wherein the sets of instructions when executed by the machine, further cause the machine to perform a tune up of the cache prior to providing the cache to the client, wherein the performing of the tune up includes determining whether a predetermined set of threshold is met for providing the cache to the client.

26. The machine-readable medium of claim 25, wherein the sets of instructions when executed by the machine, further cause the machine to maintain the cache at the server if the predetermined set of threshold is not met for providing the cache to the client.

27. The machine-readable medium of claim 23, wherein the sets of instructions when executed by the machine, further cause the machine to receive the cache at the server from the client prior to termination of the session between the server and client.

28. The machine-readable medium of claim 23, wherein the sets of instructions when executed by the machine, further cause the machine to manage the cache at the server, wherein the managing of the cache includes one or more of the following:

maintaining a history of a plurality of activities relating to the cache and the client at the server, and selecting from plurality of caching strategies prior to sending the cache to the client.

29. The machine-readable medium of claim 28, wherein the plurality of activities comprises system capabilities of the client, performance of the client, prior use of the cache by the client, and nature of tasks being performed by the client.

30. The machine-readable medium of claim 28, wherein the plurality of caching strategies is determined based a number of factors having network resources, bandwidth of the client, speed of the client, and system capabilities of the client.

31. A machine-readable medium having stored thereon data representing sets of instructions which, when executed by a machine, cause the machine to:

place a first request for a cache residing at a server, the server in communication with a client, wherein the cache is created at the server when a first communication session is initiated between the server and the client; and

in response to the first request, receive the cache from the server.

32. The machine-readable medium of claim 31, wherein the sets of instructions when executed by the machine, further cause the machine to return the cache to the server prior to termination of the first session, wherein the returning cache includes contents generated during the first session.

33. The machine-readable medium of claim 31, wherein the sets of instructions when executed by the machine, further cause the machine to

initiate a second communication session between the server and the client;

place a second request for the cache residing at the server; and

in response to the second request, receive the cache from the server, wherein the cache includes the contents generated during the second session.
