Abstract

A method, system, and computer program product for initializing at least one data processing object associated with a communication protocol used to extract status information related to a monitored device communicatively coupled to a network, including accessing the monitored device to obtain vendor information related to the monitored device; obtaining, from a support memory, information related to an access function for extracting the status information using the communication protocol from an accessible data file on the monitored device, the accessible data file having a respective data file type; storing the vendor information and the access function information in a respective data processing object of the at least one data processing object; and repeating the preceding obtaining and storing steps for each of the at least one data processing object.

Claims

1. A method of initializing at least one data processing object associated with a communication protocol used to extract status information related to a monitored device communicatively coupled to a network, comprising:

accessing the monitored device to obtain vendor information related to the monitored device;

obtaining, from a support memory, information related to an access function for extracting the status information using the communication protocol from an accessible data file on the monitored device, the accessible data file having a respective data file type;

storing the vendor information and the access function information in a respective data processing object of the at least one data processing object; and

repeating the preceding obtaining and storing steps for each of the at least one data processing objects.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

accessing, using the stored vendor information and the stored access function information, the monitored device to obtain the status information.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the accessing step comprises:

retrieving, from a monitor memory, information for accessing the monitored device using the communication protocol;

accessing the device using the communication protocol and the information retrieved from the monitor memory to obtain the vendor information related to the monitored device.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising:

accessing the monitored device using the communication protocol and the information retrieved from the monitor memory to obtain model information related to the monitored device.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

repeating the accessing, obtaining, storing and repeating steps for each communication protocol in a plurality of communication protocols used to extract the status information from the monitored device.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

selecting the communication protocol among SNMP, HTTP, and FTP.

13. The computer program product of claim 1, further comprising:

instructions for accessing, using the stored vendor information and the stored access fluction information, the monitored device to obtain the status information.

14. The computer program product of claim 1, wherein the instructions for accessing comprise:

instructions for retrieving, from a monitor memory, information for accessing the monitored device using the communication protocol;

instructions for accessing the device using the communication protocol and the information retrieved from the monitor memory to obtain the vendor information related to the monitored device.

15. The computer program product of claim 3, further comprising:

instructions for accessing the monitored device using the communication protocol and the information retrieved from the monitor memory to obtain model information related to the monitored device.

16. The computer program product of claim 1, further comprising:

instructions for repeating the instructions for accessing, obtaining, storing and repeating for each communication protocol in a plurality of communication protocols used to extract the status information from the monitored device.

17. The computer program product of claim 1, further comprising:

instructions for selecting the communication protocol among SNMP, HTTP, and FTP.

7. A system for initializing at least one data processing object associated with a communication protocol used to extract status information related to a monitored device communicatively coupled to a network, comprising:

means for accessing the monitored device to obtain vendor information related to the monitored device;

means for obtaining, from a support memory, information related to an access function for extracting the status information using the communication protocol from an accessible data file on the monitored device, the accessible data file having a respective data file type; and

means for storing the vendor information and the access function information in a respective data processing object of the at least one data processing object.

8. The system of claim 7, further comprising:

means for accessing, using the stored vendor information and the stored access function information, the monitored device to obtain the status information.

9. The system of claim 7, wherein the means for accessing comprises:

means for retrieving, from a monitor memory, information for accessing the monitored device using the communication protocol;

means for accessing the device using the communication protocol and the information retrieved from the monitor memory to obtain the vendor information related to the monitored device.

10. The system of claim 9, further comprising:

means for accessing the monitored device using the communication protocol and the information retrieved from the monitor memory to obtain model information related to the monitored device.

11. The system of claim 7, further comprising:

means for selecting the communication protocol among SNMP, HTTP, and FTP.

12. A computer program product having a computer usable medium for initializing at least one data processing object associated with a communication protocol used to extract status information related to a monitored device communicatively coupled to a network, comprising:

instructions for accessing the monitored device to obtain vendor information related to the monitored device;

instructions for obtaining, from a support memory, information related to an access function for extracting the status information using the communication protocol from an accessible data file on the monitored device, the accessible data file having a respective data file type;

instructions for storing the vendor information and the access function information in a respective data processing object of the at least one data processing object; and

instructions for repeating the preceding instructions for obtaining and storing for each of the at least one data processing objects.
