Abstract

A device for draining a coronary sinus comprises a first catheter having a distal end, a proximal end, and a passage there through, the distal end adapted to be placed in a coronary sinus, a second catheter having a distal end, a proximal end, and a passage there through, the distal end adapted to be placed in a right side of a heart, and a control system for receiving signals indicative of a coronary sinus needing to be drained of blood, the control system comprising a pump for pumping blood from a coronary sinus through the first catheter to the second catheter into a right side of a heart.

Claims

1. A device for draining a coronary sinus comprises:

a first catheter having a distal end, a proximal end, and a passage there through, the distal end adapted to be placed in a coronary sinus;

a second catheter having a distal end, a proximal end, and a passage there through, the distal end adapted to be placed in a right side of a heart; and

a control system for receiving signals indicative of a coronary sinus needing to be drained of blood, the control system comprising a pump for pumping blood from a coronary sinus through the first catheter to the second catheter into a right side of a heart.

2. The device of claim 1 wherein the control system further comprises circuitry for controlling operation of the pump.

3. The device of claim 2 wherein the circuitry comprises a pair of sensors for generating signals indicative of a Q wave of a heart and a T wave of a heart.

4. The device of claim 1 wherein the distal end of the first catheter is L-shaped to facilitate placement of the first catheter in a coronary sinus.

5. The device of claim 1 wherein the first and second catheters are coated with an anticoagulant drug.

6. The device of claim 1 wherein the control system further comprises a pair of sensor pads adapted to being placed on a patient for receiving signals indicative of systole and diastole of a heart and a circuit for determining when to start or stop the pump based upon the signals indicative of the systole and diastole of a heart.

7. The device of claim 1 wherein the pump has an inlet and an outlet and the proximal end of the first catheter is connected to the inlet and the proximal end of the second catheter is connected to the outlet.

8. A device for draining a coronary sinus comprises:

a first catheter having a distal end, a proximal end, a first passage, a second passage, a inflatable cuff positioned near the distal end and in communication with the second passage, the distal end adapted to be placed in a coronary sinus;

a second catheter having a distal end, a proximal end, and a passage there through, the distal end adapted to be placed in a right side of a heart; and

a control system for receiving signals indicative of a coronary sinus needing to be drained of blood, the control system comprising a first pump for pumping blood from a coronary sinus through the first catheter to the second catheter into a right side of a heart, and a second pump connected to the second passage of the first catheter for inflating or deflating the inflatable cuff.

9. The device of claim 8 wherein the control system further comprises circuitry for controlling operation of the pumps.

10. The device of claim 9 wherein the circuitry comprises a pair of sensors for generating signals indicative of a Q wave of a heart and a T wave of a heart.

11. The device of claim 8 wherein the distal end of the first catheter is L-shaped to facilitate placement of the first catheter in a coronary sinus.

12. The device of claim 8 wherein the first and second catheters are coated with an anticoagulant drug.

13. The device of claim 8 wherein the control system further comprises a pair of sensor pads adapted to being placed on a patient for receiving signals indicative of systole and diastole of a heart and a circuit for determining when to start or stop the first pump based upon the signals indicative of the systole and diastole of a heart.

14. The device of claim 8 wherein the first pump has an inlet and an outlet and the proximal end of the first catheter is connected to the inlet and the proximal end of the second catheter is connected to the outlet.

15. The device of claim 8 wherein the second pump has a connector and the second passage of the first catheter is mated with the connector.

16. The device of claim 8 wherein the second passage has a bore adjacent to the inflatable cuff.

17. A method of assisting drainage of blood from a coronary sinus comprising the steps of inserting a first catheter into a coronary sinus, inserting a second catheter into a right side of a heart, determining when blood needs to be drained from a coronary sinus to a right side of a heart, and pumping blood from a coronary sinus through the first catheter through the second catheter into a right side of a heart when it is determined that blood needs to be drained.

18. The method of claim 17 further comprising the step of inflating an inflatable cuff positioned at a distal end of the first catheter.

19. The method of claim 17 further comprising the step of inserting the first and second catheters into an interior jugular vein prior to inserting the first catheter into a coronary sinus and prior to inserting the second catheter into a right side of a heart.

20. The method of claim 17 wherein the determining step further comprises the step of monitoring signals indicative of systole and diastole of a heart and starting and stopping pumping of blood from a coronary sinus to a right atrium depending upon the monitoring signals indicative of systole and diastole of a heart.
