Abstract

A surgical tool system including plural powered surgical handpieces. The handpieces are removably connected to a single control console. The control console has a power supply. A controller internal to the control console simultaneously supplies power to the plural handpieces. In the event the handpieces collectively draw more power than the power supply can provide, the control console temporarily stops the application of power to one of the handpieces.

Claims

1. A control console for energizing plural power surgical handpieces, each handpiece having a power-consuming unit, said console comprising:

a single power supply;

a plurality of sockets, each said socket configure to releasbly receive a separate handpiece;

a controller for selectively providing power to the handpieces through said sockets, said controller configured to simultaneously provide power from said power supply to a plurality of handpieces.

2. The control console of claim 1, wherein:

a power supply monitor connected to said power supply for monitoring the power consumed by said power supply and to generate a limit signal when the consumed power reaches a threshold value; and

said controller is configured to receive the limit signal from said power supply and, in response to receiving the limit signal, terminates the application of power to one of the handpieces.

3. The control console of claim 2, wherein said controller is further configured to:

determine which of said handpieces drawing power is drawing the most power; and

when the limit signal is received, to terminate the application of power to the handpiece drawing the most power.
