Abstract

Disclosed are methods and apparatus for implantation into the walls of an organ such as the stomach. Deformable or inflatable anchors with a connector between are used to pull the walls of the organ together, or to implant devices in the wall of the organ. Also disclosed are surgical instruments useful in practicing the disclosed methods.

Claims

1. A system to treat an obese patient comprising:

At least one gastric implant configured to restrict flow within the stomach in at least one place wherein the gastric implant is further adapted to transmit an electrical signal to at least one stomach structure.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein said at least one gastric restriction device is a transgastric fastening assembly.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein said at least one gastric restriction device further comprises a plurality of individually tensioned transgastric fastening assemblies.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein said one stomach structure is the musculature of the stomach.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein said at least one anatomic stomach is a nerve.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein said stomach structure is the vagus nerve.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein said at least one gastric restriction device is a restriction band.

8. The system of claim 7 wherein said restriction band is a Lap-Band™

9. A system to treat an obese patient comprising:

A plurality of gastric restricting devices;

A means for adjusting the tension of at least one of the plurality of the gastric restricting devices.

10. The system of claim 9 wherein at least one of said gastric restricting devices is a transgastric fastening assembly.

11. The system of claim 9 wherein at least one of said gastric restricing devices is a restricting band.

12. The system of claim 9 wherein at least one of said gastric restricting devices is a Lap-Band™

.

13. A system to treat an obese patient comprising:

At least one transgastric fastening assembly;

An electrical conduction pathway integral to the transgastric fastening device.

14. A method for treating an obese patient comprising:

Creating a restriction to the flow of food by implanting a gastric restricting device;

Passing a current through the gastric restricting device.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein said gastric restricting device is a transgastric fastening assembly.

16. The method of claim 14 wherein said gastric restricting device is a restricting band.

17. The method of claim 14 wherein said gastric restricting band is a Lap-Band™

.
