Abstract

A system identifies a document, performs a search to identify web documents relating to an attribute associated with the document, and provides information associated with the web documents and the document.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

receiving a search query;

performing a first search to identify a document based on the search query;

performing a second search based on an attribute associated with the document; and

presenting a result of the second search.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein performing a second search comprises:

receiving selection of the document, and

performing the second search in response to the selection of the document.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein performing a second search comprises:

receiving selection of the document,

presenting a reference page associated with the document, the reference page including a plurality of links associated with the attribute,

receiving selection of one of the links, and

performing the second search in response to the selection of one of the links.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein presenting a result of the second search comprises:

identifying a web document relating to the attribute,

extracting information from the web document, and

presenting the extracted information.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein presenting a result of the second search comprises:

identifying web documents as the result of the second search,

generating scores for the web documents,

sorting the web documents based on the scores, and

presenting the sorted web documents.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein generating scores for the web documents comprises:

generating information retrieval scores for the web documents,

generating link-based scores for the web documents, and

generating overall scores for the web documents based on the information retrieval scores and the link-based scores.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

presenting a reference page associated with the document, the reference page comprising a link associated with a search for a web document with information relating to the attribute.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein selection of the link causes the second search to be performed.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein the reference page further comprises at least one of:

a description of the contents of the document,

text associated with one of a jacket, cover, or flap associated with the document,

bibliographic information associated with the document, or an advertisement.

10. The method of claim 7, wherein the reference page further comprises:

an excerpt from the document, and

a set of links to portions of the document.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the excerpt comprises an image of a portion of text from the document.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein the set of links reference at least one of:

a front cover associated with the document,

a table of contents associated with the document,

an index associated with the document, or

a back cover associated with the document.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein presenting a result of the second search comprises:

presenting a reference page associated with the document, the reference page comprising a link to a web document with information relating to the attribute.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the link was generated by performing the second search.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein the reference page further comprises at least one of:

a description of the contents of the document,

text associated with one of a jacket, cover, or flap associated with the document,

bibliographic information associated with the document, or

an advertisement.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein the reference page further comprises:

an excerpt from the document, and

a set of links to portions of the document.

17. The method of claim 13, wherein the advertisement is associated with or derived from at least one of the search query, the document, or user behavior.

18. The method of claim 1, wherein presenting a result of the second search comprises:

presenting a reference page associated with the document, the reference page comprising information extracted from a web document with information relating to the attribute.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the web document was identified by the second search.

20. The method of claim 1, wherein the attribute corresponds to at least one of a title, an author, a category, a publisher, or a publication date associated with the document.

21. A system, comprising:

means for identifying a document;

means for performing a search to identify web documents relating to an attribute associated with the document; and

means for providing information associated with the web documents and the document.

22. A system, comprising:

a memory to store instructions; and

a processor to execute the instructions to;

identify a document,

perform a search to identify a web document with information relating to an attribute associated with the document, and

present information associated with the web document.

23. A graphical user interface embodied in a computer-readable medium, comprising:

a set of links to portions of a document;

a description of the contents of the document;

bibliographic information associated with the document; and

a link to cause a search to be performed for a web document with information relating to an attribute associated with the document.

24. The graphical user interface of claim 23, wherein the link comprises a plurality of links associated with different attributes associated with the document.

25. The graphical user interface of claim 23, further comprising:

an excerpt from the document.

26. The graphical user interface of claim 25, wherein the excerpt includes a plurality of words, one of the words being visually distinguished with regard to another one of the words.

27. The graphical user interface of claim 23, wherein the set of links reference at least one of:

a front cover associated with the document,

a table of contents associated with the document,

an index associated with the document, or

a back cover associated with the document.

28. The graphical user interface of claim 23, wherein the attribute corresponds to at least one of a title, an author, a category, a publisher, or a publication date associated with the document.

29. A method, comprising:

receiving identification of a document from a user;

automatically performing a plurality of searches to identify web documents relating to attributes associated with the document; and

providing information associated with the web documents to the user.

30. A computer-readable medium containing computer-executable instructions, comprising:

instructions for identifying a document;

instructions for performing a search to identify web documents with information relating to an attribute associated with the document;

instructions for extracting information from the web documents; and

instructions for presenting the extracted information along with information associated with the document.
