87. The compound of claim 86, wherein the substituted and unsubstituted alditol is derived from the reduction of a monosaccharide.

88. The compound of claim 87, wherein the monosaccharide is a pyranose or furanose.

89. The compound of claim 86, wherein the substituted and unsubstituted alditol is represented by the formula

91. A method for the treatment of an inflammatory disorder, comprising administering to a host in need thereof an effective treatment amount of the compound of claim 70.

92. A method for the treatment of a cardiovascular disorder, comprising administering to a host in need thereof an effective treatment amount of the compound of a claim 70.

93. A method for treatment of a disorder mediated by VCAM-1, comprising administering to a host in need thereof an effective treatment amount of the compound of claim 70.

94. A method of treating an immune response, comprising administering to a host in need thereof an effective treatment amount of the compound of claim 70.
