Abstract

An angioplasty balloon including a non-deployable stent to prevent or reduce the potential for slippage of the inflated balloon with respect to the vessel wall being treated. The balloon includes a non-deployable stent that is adapted to be secured to the balloon or angioplasty balloon catheter. The stent has a proximal end, a distal end, and at least one extension section, at least one set of serpentine rings and at least one set of elongation links that allow expansion of the strut to accommodate the inflation of the balloon. The stent is made of a material so that the stent collapses upon deflation of the balloon.

Claims

1. A method for performing angioplasty in a blood vessel, said method comprising:

introducing a balloon catheter into the blood vessel;

inflating the balloon to radially expand a non-deployable stent, wherein a portion of the stent shortens in length as the stent is radially expanded;

wherein the non-deployable stent is attached to the balloon catheter at at least one location and includes a region which expands longitudinally to compensate for shortening of the length which results from radial expansion.

2. A method as in claim 1, wherein the non-deployable stent is attached at both ends to two locations on the balloon catheter.

3. A method as in claim 2, wherein the non-deployable stent includes at least one extension section at one of the attachment locations.

4. A method as in claim 3, wherein the non-deployable stent includes a second extension section at the other attachment location.

5. A method as in claim 2, wherein the non-deployable stent includes one or more elongation links along its length.

6. A method as in claim 1, wherein the non-deployable stent comprises a plurality of serpentine rings.

7. An angioplasty catheter comprising:

a catheter shaft having a distal end and a proximal end;

an inflatable balloon disposed near the distal end of the catheter shaft;

a non-deployable stent disposed over the inflatable balloon;

wherein the stent is attached to the shaft on at least one side of the balloon and wherein the stent comprises longitudinally expandable structure which accommodates axial shortening of the stent upon radial expansion of the stent resulting from balloon expansion.

8. An angioplasty catheter as in claim 7, wherein the stent is attached to the catheter shaft on both sides of the balloon.

9. An angioplasty catheter as in claim 8, further comprising an extension section at at least one end of the stent adjacent the attachment to the catheter shaft.

10. An angioplasty catheter as in claim 9, including an extension section of both ends of the stent.

11. An angioplasty catheter as in claim 8, further comprising at least one elongation link in the stent.

12. An angioplasty catheter as in claim 11, including a plurality of elongation links in the stent.
