Abstract

A system for easily determining viewership of articles or ads in printed publications and using the determined viewership to determine author compensation, ad rates, or other historical or demographic related information is described. The system receives scan information of portions of a number of paper documents that is generated by scanners operated by a number of users. The system searches digital content using the received scan information, and determines a readership value for components of the paper document based upon the search.

Claims

1. A method in a computing system, comprising:

receiving scan information of portions of a plurality of paper documents as generated by scanners operated by a plurality of users;

searching digital content using the received scan information; and

determining a readership value for components of the paper document based on the search.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the paper documents include a plurality of articles and a plurality of advertisements.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising setting advertisement rates based on the determined readership values.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising billing advertisers based at least partially on the set advertisement rates.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein the digital content is associated with a registered publishing entity.

6. The method of claim 3, wherein the readership value is based on scans of one or more of a portion of text, an icon, a symbol, or a mark.

7. The method of claim 3, wherein the readership value includes a number of scans of one or more of the plurality of articles.

8. The method of claim 3, wherein the readership value includes a number of scans of one or more of the plurality of advertisements.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising ranking authors based on the readership values.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the received scan information includes demographic information.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the demographic information includes one or more of information associated with users of scanners or location information.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein determining the readership value includes determining demographic information associated with the scan information.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the demographic information includes one or more of information associated with users of scanners or location information.

14. A computer-based system, comprising:

a memory for storing information associated with a plurality of paper documents;

a processor coupled to the memory, the processor comprising;

a component for receiving scan information of portions of the plurality of paper documents as generated by scanners operated by a plurality of users;

a component for searching the stored information using the received scan information; and

a component for determining a readership value for components of the paper document based on the search.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein the paper documents include a plurality of articles and a plurality of advertisements.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the processor further comprises a component for setting advertisement rates based on the determined readership values.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein the processor further comprises a component for billing advertisers based at least partially on the set advertisement rates.

18. The system of claim 16, wherein a portion of the stored information is associated with a publishing entity.

19. The system of claim 16, wherein the readership value is based on scans of one or more of a portion of text, an icon, a symbol, or a mark.

20. The system of claim 16, wherein the readership value includes a number of scans of one or more of the plurality of articles.

21. The system of claim 16, wherein the readership value includes a number of scans of one or more of the plurality of advertisements.

22. The system of claim 14, wherein the processor further comprises a component for ranking authors based on the readership values.

23. The system of claim 14, wherein the received scan information includes demographic information.

24. The system of claim 23, wherein the demographic information includes information associated with one or more of users of scanners or location information.

25. The system of claim 14, wherein the component for determining the readership value determines demographic information associated with the scan information.

26. The system of claim 25, wherein the demographic information includes information associated with one or more of users of scanners or location information.

27. A computer program product residing on a computer-readable medium for performing a method, the method comprising:

receiving scan information of portions of a plurality of paper documents as generated by scanners operated by a plurality of users;

searching digital content using the received scan information; and

determining a readership value for components of the paper document based on the search.

28. The product of claim 27, wherein the paper documents include a plurality of articles and a plurality of advertisements.

29. The product of claim 28, further comprising setting advertisement rates based on the determined readership values.

30. The product of claim 29, further comprising billing advertisers based at least partially on the set advertisement rates.
