Abstract

Transmitter and receiver units for use in an OFDM communications system and configurable to support multiple types of services. The transmitter unit includes one or more encoders, a symbol mapping element, and a modulator. Each encoder receives and codes a respective channel data stream to generate a corresponding coded data stream. The symbol mapping element receives and maps data from the coded data streams to generate modulation symbol vectors, with each modulation symbol vector including a set of data values used to modulate a set of tones to generate an OFDM symbol. The modulator modulates the modulation symbol vectors to provide a modulated signal suitable for transmission. The data from each coded data stream is mapped to a respective set of one or more “circuits”. Each circuit can be defined to include a number of tones from a number of OFDM symbols, a number of tones from a single OFDM symbol, all tones from one or more OFDM symbols, or some other combination of tones. The circuits can have equal size or different sizes. Different circuits can be used for full rate data (e.g., active speech) and low rate data (e.g., silence periods).

Claims

1. A method for providing channel information in a wireless communication system, comprising:

processing signals received at a plurality of receiver antennas;

determining channel state information (CSI) indicative of channel conditions for the plurality of receiver antennas; and

transmitting the CSI to a transmitter of the signals received at the plurality of receiver antennas.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the CSI comprises information indicative of eigenvectors indicative of the channel conditions.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the CSI comprises information indicative of eigenmodes for transmission to a receiver including the plurality of receiver antennas.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the CSI comprises information indicative of matrices of complex gain values that are descriptive of transmission paths to the plurality of receiver antennas.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the CSI comprises information for preconditioning transmission symbols to be transmitted to the plurality of receiver antennas.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the CSI comprises information indicative of channel quality.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the CSI comprises information indicative of a carrier-to-noise-plus-interference ratio.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the CSI comprises information indicative of a channel matrix between a transmitter and a receiver including the plurality of transmitter antennas.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the CSI comprises a channel transfer function.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the CSI comprises an eigenvector matrix.

11. A wireless device comprising:

at least one antenna; and

a processor coupled to the at least one antenna processor configured to determining channel state information (CSI) indicative of channel conditions for signals received at the at least one antenna.

12. The wireless device of claim 11, wherein the CSI comprises information indicative of eigenvectors indicative of the channel conditions.

13. The wireless device of claim 11, wherein the CSI comprises information indicative of eigenmodes for transmission to a receiver including the plurality of receiver antennas.

14. The wireless device of claim 11, wherein the CSI comprises information indicative of matrices of complex gain values that are descriptive of transmission paths to the plurality of receiver antennas.

15. The wireless device of claim 11, wherein the CSI comprises information for preconditioning transmission symbols to be transmitted to the plurality of receiver antennas.

16. The wireless device of claim 11, wherein the CSI comprises information indicative of channel quality.

17. The wireless device of claim 11, wherein the CSI comprises information indicative of a carrier-to-noise-plus-interference ratio.

18. The wireless device of claim 11, wherein the CSI comprises information indicative of a channel matrix between a transmitter and a receiver including the plurality of transmitter antennas.

19. The wireless device of claim 11, wherein the CSI comprises a channel transfer function.

20. The wireless device of claim 11, wherein the CSI comprises an eigenvector matrix.

21. An apparatus for wireless communication, comprising:

means for processing signals received at a plurality of receiver antennas;

means for determining channel state information (CSI) indicative of channel conditions for the plurality of receiver antennas; and

means for transmitting the CSI to a transmitter of the signals received at the plurality of receiver antennas.

22. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the CSI comprises information indicative of eigenvectors indicative of the channel conditions.

23. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the CSI comprises information indicative of eigenmodes for transmission to a receiver including the plurality of receiver antennas.

24. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the CSI comprises information indicative of matrices of complex gain values that are descriptive of transmission paths to the plurality of receiver antennas.

25. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the CSI comprises information for preconditioning transmission symbols to be transmitted to the plurality of receiver antennas.

26. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the CSI comprises information indicative of channel quality.

27. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the CSI comprises information indicative of a carrier-to-noise-plus-interference ratio.

28. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the CSI comprises information indicative of a channel matrix between a transmitter and a receiver including the plurality of transmitter antennas.
