Abstract
An embolic protection device has a collapsible filter element (105) mounted on a carrier such as a guidewire (101). The filter element (105) collapses into the outer end of a catheter (118) for deployment and retrieval through a vascular system of a patient. The filter element (105) has a collapsible filter body with a proximal inlet end and a distal outlet end. The proximal inlet end has inlet openings sized to allow blood and embolic material enter the filter body. The outlet end has outlet openings which allow through passage of blood but retain embolic material within the filter body. After use, the catheter (118) is movable along the guidewire (101) to engage the proximal end of the filter element and close the inlet openings before sliding over the filter element from the proximal end to the distal end to progressively collapse the filter body on the guidewire (101) for retrieval. The filter element (105) may conveniently be mounted on a tubular sleeve (104) which is slidable and rotatable on the guidewire (101) between spaced-apart slops (106, 120) on the guidewire (101) which allows some manipulation of the guidewire independently of the filter when the filter is in use.

43. A method for protecting a patient during an interventional procedure, comprising the steps of:

advancing a guidewire to a desired location within a vessel;
advancing a filter and delivery sheath along the guidewire, the filter carried by the delivery sheath;
removing the delivery sheath from the filter, thereby releasing the filter;
expanding the filter within the desired location;
removing the delivery sheath from the desired location;
advancing a catheter over the guidewire to the desired location;
performing an interventional procedure at the desired location, wherein released embolic material is captured by the filter;
removing the catheter from the desired location;
advancing a retrieval sheath over the guidewire;
engaging the filter with the retrieval sheath; and
removing the filter and retrieval sheath from the desired location.

advancing a guidewire to a desired location within a vessel;
advancing a filter and delivery sheath along the guidewire, the filter carried by the delivery sheath;
removing the delivery sheath from the filter, thereby releasing the filter;

removing the delivery sheath from the desired location;
advancing a catheter over the guidewire to the desired location; and

60. A medical device, comprising:

a guidewire having a proximal end, a distal end, and a stop mounted on the distal end;
a delivery sheath having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen therebetween, the delivery sheath slideably engaging the guidewire; and
a filter releasably carried within the lumen of the delivery sheath, the filter slideably engaging the guidewire and removable from the guidewire by sliding the filter proximal on the guidewire, wherein, in use, the guidewire is positioned within a vessel of a patient, the filter and delivery sheath are advanced along the guidewire to a desired location within the vessel, and the delivery sheath is removed from the filter to release the filter. - View Dependent Claims (61, 62)
