Abstract

Embodiments of the invention provide methods and apparatuses for implementing telemetry applications with the SIM card of a mobile equipment. For one embodiment of the invention the telemetry application allows the encoding of TAD within a supplementary services message and transmission of the TAD over a control channel of a GMS telecommunications system. For one embodiment of the invention the telemetry application allows the decoding of caller identification message received from a CMS to obtain the TAD.

Claims

1. A mobile station for a wireless telecommunications system comprising:

a mobile equipment; and

a subscriber identity module (SIM) coupled to the mobile equipment, the SIM having implemented thereon a telemetry application.

2. The mobile station of claim 1 wherein the wireless communications system is selected from the group consisting of a Global System for Mobile (GSM) system, an Integrated Digital Enhanced Network (iDEN) system, or a Univeral Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS).

3. The mobile station of claim 2 wherein the wireless communication system is GSM and the telemetry application is coded using a SIM application toolkit.

4. The mobile station of claim 3 wherein the telemetry application effects a process for transmitting telemetry application data comprising:

obtaining telemetry application data from a telemetry device coupled to the mobile station;

encoding the telemetry application data within a supplementary services message; and

transmitting the supplementary service message over a control channel of the GSM wireless communication system to a central monitoring station.

The mobile station of claim 4 wherein the supplementary services message is a call forwarding message selected from the group consisting of a call forwarding unconditional message, a call forwarding on mobile subscriber busy message, a call forwarding on no reply message, and a call forwarding on mobile subscriber unreachable.

6. The mobile station of claim 5 wherein the call forwarding message is transmitted over a standalone dedicated control channel.

7. The mobile station of claim 5 wherein the application-specific data is included in the forward-to-number of the call forwarding message.

8. The mobile station of claim 3 wherein the telemetry application effects a process for transmitting telemetry application data comprising:

decoding a page, the page containing telemetry application data encoded as a calling party number of a provide roaming number request of the GSM wireless communication system; and

transmitting the telemetry application data from the mobile station to a telemetry device coupled thereto.

9. A method comprising:

developing a telemetry application;

coding the telemetry application as invocations of functions of a wireless communications system; and

implementing the coded telemetry application on a SIM card of a mobile station of the wireless communication system using application standards of the wireless communication system.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the wireless communications system is selected from the group consisting of a Global System for Mobile (GSM) system, an Integrated Digital Enhanced Network (iDEN) system, or a Univeral Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS).

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the wireless communication system is GSM and the telemetry application is coded using a SIM application toolkit.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the telemetry application effects a process for transmitting telemetry application data comprising:

obtaining telemetry application data from a telemetry device coupled to the mobile station;

encoding the telemetry application data within a supplementary services message; and

transmitting the supplementary service message over a control channel of the GSM wireless communication system to a central monitoring station.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the supplementary services message is a call forwarding message selected from the group consisting of a call forwarding unconditional message, a call forwarding on mobile subscriber busy message, a call forwarding on no reply message, and a call forwarding on mobile subscriber unreachable.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein the call forwarding message is transmitted over a standalone dedicated control channel.

15. The method of claim 13 wherein the application-specific data is included in the forward-to-number of the call forwarding message.

16. The method of claim 11 wherein the telemetry application effects a process for transmitting telemetry application data comprising:

decoding a page, the page containing telemetry application data encoded as a calling party number of a provide roaming number request of the GSM wireless communication system; and

transmitting the telemetry application data from the mobile station to a telemetry device coupled thereto.

17. A SIM card having instructions that, if executed, results in a machine performing operations comprising:

accessing a telemetry application; and

executing the telemetry application.

18. The SIM card of claim 17 wherein the SIM card pertains to a particular wireless communication system selected from the group consisting of a Global System for Mobile (GSM) system, an Integrated Digital Enhanced Network (iDEN) system, or a Univeral Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS).

19. The SIM card of claim 18 wherein the wireless communication system is GSM and the telemetry application is coded using a SIM application toolkit.

20. The SIM card of claim 19 wherein executing the telemetry application effects a process for transmitting telemetry application data comprising:

obtaining telemetry application data from a telemetry device coupled to a mobile station including the SIM card;

encoding the telemetry application data within a supplementary services message; and

transmitting the supplementary service message over a control channel of the GSM wireless communication system to a central monitoring station.

The SIM card of claim 20 wherein the supplementary services message is a call forwarding message selected from the group consisting of a call forwarding unconditional message, a call forwarding on mobile subscriber busy message, a call forwarding on no reply message, and a call forwarding on mobile subscriber unreachable.

22. The SIM card of claim 21 wherein the call forwarding message is transmitted over a standalone dedicated control channel.

23. The SIM card of claim 21 wherein the application-specific data is included in the forward-to-number of the call forwarding message.

24. The SIM card of claim 19 wherein executing the telemetry application effects a process for transmitting telemetry application data comprising:

decoding a page, the page containing telemetry application data encoded as a calling party number of a provide roaming number request of the GSM wireless communication system; and

transmitting the telemetry application data from a mobile station including the SIM card to a telemetry device coupled thereto.
