Abstract

An intraocular lens system is presented that comprises an electro-active lens comprising multiple independently controllable zones or pixels, and a controller capable of being remotely programmed.

Claims

1. An intraocular lens system comprising:

an electro-active lens comprising multiple independently controllable zones or pixels, and

a controller capable of being remotely programmed.

2. An intraocular lens system according to claim 1, further comprising:

a power source in electrical communication with the electro-active lens.

3. An intraocular lens system according to claim 2, wherein the power source comprises an energy storage element positioned adjacent the electro-active lens.

4. An intraocular lens system according to claim 3 wherein the energy storage element comprises at least one of the set consisting of a battery and a capacitor.

5. An intraocular lens system according to claim 3 further comprising:

a charging arrangement adapted for selectively supplying electricity to the energy storage element.

6. An intraocular lens system according to claim 5 wherein the charging arrangement comprises a piezoelectric element in electrical communication with the energy storage element.

7. An intraocular lens system according to claim 6 wherein the piezoelectric element is adapted for attachment to a ciliary body of a subject'"'"'s eye and is adapted for generation of electricity in response to movement of the ciliary body.

8. An intraocular lens system according to claim 5 wherein the charging arrangement comprises an external inductive element adapted for charging the energy storage element by induction while remaining external to the subject'"'"'s eye.

9. An intraocular lens system according to claim 8 wherein the external inductive element is disposed at least partially inside a pillow.

10. An intraocular lens system according to claim 7 wherein the external inductive element is attached to a spectacle assembly.

11. An intraocular lens system according to claim 4 wherein the charging arrangement comprises a solar cell.

12. An intraocular lens system according to claim 4 wherein the charging arrangement comprises an external electrical power source conductively linked to the energy storage element by an electrical bus.

13. An intraocular lens system according to claim 1, further comprising:

an antenna connected to the controller; and

a wireless programming unit adapted for wireless communication with the controller via the antenna.

14. An intraocular lens system according to claim 1 wherein the electro-active lens comprises a base lens element attached to the electro-active lens.

15. An intraocular lens system according to claim 14 wherein the base lens element is configured to provide a fixed base refractive power.

16. An intraocular lens system according to claim 1 wherein the electro-active lens is adapted to selectively correct for at least one conventional refractive error.

17. An intraocular lens system according to claim 1 wherein the electro-active lens is adapted to selectively correct for at least one non-conventional refractive error.

18. An intraocular lens system according to claim 1 further comprising:

at least one anchor attached to the electro-active lens and adapted for positioning and stabilizing the intraocular lens within the membrane of a subject'"'"'s eye.

19. An intraocular lens system comprising an electro-active lens element, wherein said electro-active element contains a bi-stable liquid molecule.

20. An intraocular lens system comprising an electro-active lens element, wherein said electro-active lens element is powered by a power source capable of being recharged remotely.

21. An intraocular lens system comprising both an electro-active lens and a non-electro-active accommodating lens, wherein said electro-active lens and non electro-active accommodating lens are in optical communication.
