An organic electroluminescent device comprising at least one organic layer between a pair of electrodes, wherein the at least one organic layer includes a luminescent layer, at least one layer of the at least one organic layer comprises at least one metal complex containing a tri- or higher-dentate ligand, and a compound having a heterocyclic skeleton containing at least two heteroatoms is contained in the organic layer containing the metal complex and/or in other organic layer(s).
