Abstract

The present invention provides a method of wireless telecommunication in a distributed network comprised of a plurality of access points. The method includes receiving information indicating that a dormant call session is to be activated. The method also includes providing an identifier indicative of the dormant call session. The identifier includes information indicative of an access point having information indicative of a state of the call session stored thereon.

Claims

1. A method of wireless telecommunication in a distributed network comprised of a plurality of access points, comprising:

receiving information indicating that a dormant call session is to be activated;

providing an identifier indicative of the dormant call session, the identifier comprising information indicative of an access point having information indicative of a state of the call session stored thereon.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving information indicating that the dormant call session is to be activated comprises receiving user input indicating that the dormant call session is to be activated.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving information indicating that the dormant call session is to be activated comprises receiving an indication that data is available to be transmitted to a mobile unit associated with the dormant call session.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving information indicating that the dormant call session is to be activated comprises receiving a paging message.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein receiving the paging message comprises receiving the paging message from an access point that served the dormant call session prior to dormancy.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein receiving the paging message comprises receiving an address associated with an access point.

7. The method of claim 1, comprising accessing the information indicative of the state of the call session.

8. The method of claim 7, comprising providing the information indicative of the state of the call session to an access point.

9. The method of claim 8, comprising forming a traffic channel between a mobile unit and the access point.

10. The method of claim 1, comprising migrating call session state information to at least one access point prior to dormancy.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein migrating call session state information to at least one access point prior to dormancy comprises migrating a call session identifier to at least one access point prior to dormancy.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one access point is a base station router.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein receiving information indicating that the dormant call session is to be activated comprises receiving user input indicating that the dormant call session is to be activated.

15. The method of claim 11, wherein receiving information indicating that the dormant call session is to be activated comprises receiving data intended for a mobile unit associated with the dormant call session.

16. The method of claim 15, comprising providing a paging message in response to receiving data intended for the mobile unit associated with the dormant call session.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein providing the paging message comprises providing an address associate with at least one access point.

18. The method of claim 16, wherein providing the paging message comprises providing the paging message to at least one nearest neighbor access point.

19. The method of claim 11, comprising receiving a paging message.

20. The method of claim 19, comprising providing a paging message to a mobile unit in response to receiving the paging message.

21. The method of claim 19, wherein receiving the paging message comprises receiving an address associated with at least one access point.

22. The method of claim 11, wherein identifying the at least one of the plurality of access points comprises identifying a color code indicative of a subnet of access points.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein identifying the at least one of the plurality of access points comprises determining an access point identifier.

24. The method of claim 11, comprising accessing the information indicative of a state of the call session.

25. The method of claim 11, comprising forming a traffic channel with a mobile unit associated with the dormant call session.

26. The method of claim 11, wherein the plurality of access points comprise at least one base station router.

13. A method of wireless telecommunication in a distributed network comprised of a plurality of access points, comprising:

receiving information indicating that a dormant call session is to be activated;

receiving an identifier indicative of the dormant call session; and

identifying at least one of the plurality of access points based on the identifier, the at least one identified access point having information indicative of a state of the call session stored thereon.

27. A method of wireless telecommunication in a distributed network comprised of a plurality of access points, comprising:

accessing information indicative of a first access point;

accessing information indicative of each of a plurality of second access points in an active set;

comparing the information indicative of the first access point and the active set; and

requesting a call session identifier when a predetermined portion of the information indicative of the first access point differs from a predetermined portion of the information indicative of at least one of the plurality of second access points in the active set.

28. The method of claim 27, wherein accessing the information indicative of the first access point comprises accessing a color code associated the first access point.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein accessing information indicative of each of the plurality of second access points in the active set comprises accessing a color code associated with each of the plurality of second access points in the active set.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein requesting the call session identifier when the predetermined portion of the information indicative of the first access point differs from the predetermined portion of the information indicative of at least one of the plurality of second access points in the active set comprises requesting a call session identifier when the color code associated with the first access point differs from the color code associated with at least one of the plurality of second access points in the active set.

31. The method of claim 27, wherein requesting the call session identifier comprises requesting a Unicast Access Terminal Identifier.

32. The method of claim 27, wherein requesting the call session identifier comprises requesting the call session identifier when a predetermined portion of the information indicative of the first access point differs from a predetermined portion the information indicative of all the plurality of second access points in the active set.
