Abstract

An access portal is provided including a housing, a body defining a fluid reservoir, and a septum enclosing the fluid reservoir. A stem in fluid communication with the fluid reservoir extends from the fluid reservoir. The access portal also includes a reservoir insert disposed within the fluid reservoir, in which the reservoir insert decreases the fluid fill volume of the reservoir.

Claims

1. An access portal comprising:

a body defining fluid reservoir;

a septum enclosing at least a portion of said fluid reservoir; and

a reservoir insert disposed within said fluid reservoir.

2. An access portal according to claim 1 wherein said reservoir insert comprises a ring member.

3. An access portal according to claim 1 wherein said reservoir insert comprises a partial ring.

4. An access portal according to claim 1, further comprising a stem in fluid communication with said fluid reservoir via an outlet passage.

5. An access portal according to claim 1, further comprising a housing at least partially surrounding said body.

6. An access portal according to claim 1, wherein said reservoir insert comprises a unitary body.

7. An access portal according to claim 1, wherein said reservoir insert comprises a toroid.

8. An access portal according to claim 1, wherein said reservoir insert comprises a plurality of members coupled to one another.

9. An access portal according to claim 1, wherein said reservoir insert comprises a plurality of conical members coupled to one another.

10. An access portal according to claim 1, wherein said reservoir insert comprises a plurality of spherical members coupled to one another.

11. An access portal according to claim 1, wherein said reservoir insert is moveable within said fluid reservoir.

12. An access portal according to claim 2, wherein said ring member has a circular geometry.

13. An access portal according to claim 1 wherein said reservoir insert comprises a plurality of members slidably coupled to one of a ring or a partial ring.

14. An access portal comprising:

a body defining a fluid reservoir;

a septum enclosing at least a portion of said fluid reservoir; and

a reservoir insert disposed within said reservoir, said reservoir insert comprising an at least partial ring member having one or more protuberances formed thereon.

15. An access portal according to claim 14 wherein said reservoir insert comprises a closed ring member having one or more protuberances formed thereon.

16. An access portal according to claim 14, further comprising a stem in fluid communication with said fluid reservoir via an outlet passage.

17. An access portal according to claim 14, wherein said one or more protuberances are capable of, at least in part, deflecting a needle to cause the reservoir insert to move out of the path of the needle.

18. An access portal according to claim 14, wherein said reservoir insert reduces a fluid fill volume of said reservoir by about 40%.

19. An access portal according to claim 14, wherein at least a portion of one of said protuberances has a conical shape.

20. An access portal according to claim 14, wherein at least a portion of one of said protuberances has a spherical shape.

21. An access portal according to claim 14, wherein said reservoir insert comprises a unitary member.

22. An access portal according to claim 14 further comprising a housing at least partially surrounding said body.

23. An access portal according to claim 22, wherein said septum is disposed at least partially between said body and said housing.

24. An access portal according to claim 14, wherein said reservoir insert has a circular geometry.
