Abstract

A storage virtualization system that follows a four-layer hierarchy model, which facilitates the ability to create storage policies to automate complex storage management issues, is provided. The four-layers are a disk pool, Redundant Arrays of Independent Disks (RAID arrays), storage pools and a virtual pool of Virtual Disks (Vdisks). The storage virtualization system creates virtual storage arrays from the RAID arrays and assigns these arrays to storage pools in which all of the arrays have identical RAID levels and underlying chunk sizes representing in abstraction very large arrays. Virtual disks are then created from these pools wherein the abstraction of a storage pool makes it possible to create storage policies for the automatic expansion of virtual disks as they fill with user files.

Claims

1. A storage virtualization system, comprising:

a four-layer hierarchy model for facilitating an ability to create storage policies for enabling virtual volumes to be created, expanded, deleted, moved or selectively presented regardless of underlying storage subsystems.

2. The storage virtualization system according to claim 1 further enabling virtualization across multiple heterogeneous hosts and storage devices.

3. The storage virtualization system according to claim 1 further supporting virtual volume partitioning and expansion.

4. The storage virtualization system according to claim 1 further supporting LUN mapping to present storage based on host/user preferences.

5. The storage virtualization system according to claim 1 further increasing efficiency and utilization of storage capacity in a SAN environment.

6. The storage virtualization system according to claim 1 further supporting virtual volumes created across multiple storage devices.

7. The storage virtualization system according to claim 1 further enabling IT administrators to manage larger number of storage devices.

8. The storage virtualization system according to claim 1 further eliminating downtime attributed to scaling storage (adding additional hard disks) and expanding volumes.

9. The storage virtualization system according to claim 1 further enabling IT administrators to deploy all disk capacity.

10. The storage virtualization system according to claim 1 further intelligently allocating storage capacity as needed.

11. The storage virtualization system according to claim 1 for centrally managing storage devices.

12. The storage virtualization system according to claim 1 wherein SANfs metadata is stored at the beginning of a storage pool and backed up at the end of the storage pool to provide better protection and recoverability of SANfs.

13. The storage virtualization system according to claim 1 wherein SAN management metadata is also stored as SANfs metadata to provide storage centric SAN management.

14. The storage virtualization system according to claim 1 wherein extent-based capacity management for better performance.

15. The storage virtualization system according to claim 1 wherein embedded file system intelligence to facilitate automatic capacity monitoring and growth.

18. The storage virtualization system according to claim 1 comprising:

a four-layer hierarchy model for facilitating an ability to create storage policies for enabling virtual volumes to be created, expanded, deleted, moved or selectively presented regardless of the underlying storage wherein data services are facilitated through corresponding interfaces in a virtual node and said virtual node is stored and protected as SANfs meta data to guarantee the said data services are persistent through system shutdown and boot-up.

19. The storage virtualization system according to claim 18 further enabling virtualization across multiple heterogeneous hosts and storage devices.

20. The storage virtualization system according to claim 18 further supporting virtual volume partitioning and expansion.

16. The storage virtualization system according to claim comprising:

a four-layer hierarchy model for facilitating an ability to create storage policies for embedded OS partition intelligence to provide partition based data service on a vdisk/volume dividing said vdisk into several partitions and creating file systems on each partition.

17. The storage virtualization system according to claim 16 further comprising LUN masking for access security and LUN mapping for host-specific presentation.
