Abstract

A method for displaying video information in a digital broadcast receiver during a change from a current channel to a new channel is disclosed. The method is suitable for displaying video information such as an advertisement, information selected by the user, or a program guide.

Claims

1. A method for displaying information in a digital broadcast receiver, the method comprising the steps of:

selecting substitute information to be displayed during a channel change from a current channel to a new channel;

obtaining display conditions of the substitute information; and

displaying the substitute information in accordance with the display conditions during the channel change.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the substitute information is an advertisement.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the substitute information is a program guide.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the program guide is a program guide of the current channel.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein the program guide is a program guide of the new channel.

6. The method of claim 3, wherein the program guide is an electronic program guide.

7. The method of claim 3, wherein the program guide is an interactive program guide.

8. The method of claim 3, wherein the program guide is a guide of recently viewed programs.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the substitute information is a user selectable digital broadcast receiver function.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the selectable function displays a background image.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the background image is one of a still image and a moving image.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein the background image is provided from a broadcast service provider by a broadcast signal.

13. The method of claim 10, wherein the background image is an image captured from a video displayed by the broadcast receiver.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the substitute information is tutorial information.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein the substitute information is a schedule.

16. The method of claim 1 further comprises the steps of:

receiving the substitute information from a broadcasting service provider; and

storing the received substitute information.

17. The method of claim 1 further comprising specifying a duration of time in which the substitute information is to be displayed during the channel change.

18. The method of claim 17 further comprising the step of delaying the display of the new channel until the completion of the duration of time to display the substitute information.

19. The method of claim 1 futher comprising specifying a time at which to display substitute information.
