Abstract

A method on a computing device is provided for enhancing the memory and cognitive ability of an older adult by requiring the adult to listen to two or more aurally processed syllables, presented serially, view the syllables graphically, and then designate the order in which the syllables were aurally presented. A number of trials are presented to the adult. As the adult correctly determines the syllable order in trials, the difficulty of the trials is increased by increasing the number of syllables presented, and by reducing the amount of processing that is applied to the syllables.

Claims

1. A method on a computing device for exposing an auditory system of an aging adult to a plurality of syllables, which requires the adult to temporarily store and retrieve an order of the syllables, the syllables processed to emphasize and stretch rapid frequency transitions, the method comprising the steps of:

providing a plurality of syllables for presentation to the adult, on the computing device;

providing a plurality of processing levels for processing the syllables for presentation on the computing device;

selecting from the plurality of processing levels, a first processing level to be used to process selected syllables;

selecting from the plurality of syllables, a first plurality of syllables for presentation, both aurally and graphically, on the computing device;

aurally presenting on the computing device the first plurality of syllables according to the first processing level, the first plurality of syllables presented serially;

after said step of aurally presenting, graphically presenting on the computing device the first plurality of syllables;

requiring the adult to select on the computing device the graphically presented syllables corresponding to an order in which they were aurally presented; and

repeating said steps of selecting from the plurality of syllables, aurally presenting, graphically presenting, and requiring;

wherein said step of repeating results in exposing the auditory system of the aging adult to a substantial number of processed syllables thereby driving improvements in the adult'"'"'s working memory.

2. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the syllables are consonant-vowel-consonant syllables.

3. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the syllables are phonemes.

4. The method as recited in claim 1 further comprising:

providing a plurality of categories, each of the categories containing a set of syllables from the plurality of syllables.

5. The method as recited in claim 4 wherein as the adult correctly identifies the order for presented syllables from a first one of the plurality of categories, repeating said step of repeating for syllables from a second one of the plurality of categories.

6. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein serially indicates that the first plurality of syllables are aurally presented, one at a time.

7. The method as recited in claim 6 wherein serially indicates that the first plurality of syllables are aurally presented, one at a time, one after another, until all of the syllables in the first plurality have been presented.

8. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein said step of graphically presenting comprises:

providing a graphical icon for each one of the plurality of syllables; and

displaying graphical icons on the computing device that correspond to the aurally presented syllables.

9. The method as recited in claim 8 wherein the displayed graphical icons are selectable by the adults using a pointer on the computing device.

10. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the first processing level separates a consonant portion and a vowel portion of each of the selected syllables by a first predetermined time period known as an inter-stimulus-interval (ISI).

11. The method as recited in claim 10 wherein a second processing level separates the consonant portion and the vowel portion of each of the selected syllables by a second predetermined ISI which has a shorter duration that the first processing level.

12. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the first processing level stretches in the time domain a consonant portion of the selected syllables by a first amount.

13. The method as recited in claim 12 wherein a second processing level stretches in the time domain a consonant portion of the selected syllables by a second amount, the second amount being less than that of the first processing level.

14. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the first plurality of syllables presented aurally to the adult comprises two syllables.

15. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein said step of graphically presenting further comprises:

graphically presenting distracter syllables along with the first plurality of syllables.

16. The method as recited in claim 15 wherein the distracter syllables are provided to the adult to allow the adult to make incorrect selections.

17. The method as recited in claim 15 wherein the distracter syllables are provided to the adult to make said step of requiring more difficult.

18. The method as recited in claim 1 further comprising:

if the adult correctly selects the graphically presented syllables corresponding to the order in which they were aurally presented, selecting a second processing level to be used to process selected syllables; and

repeating said steps of selecting from the plurality of syllables, aurally presenting, graphically presenting, requiring, and repeating, utilizing the second processing level.

19. The method as recited in claim 18 wherein said step of selecting the second processing level occurs after the adult as correctly ordered presented syllables N times.

20. The method as recited in claim 1 further comprising:

if the adult correctly selects the graphically presented syllables corresponding to the order in which they were aurally presented, increasing the number of syllables presented to the adult in said steps of selecting, aurally presenting, graphically presenting, requiring, and repeating.

21. The method as recited in claim 20 wherein by increasing the number of syllables presented to the adult, said step of requiring is made more difficult.

22. A method on a computing device for improving working memory in an aging adult, the method requiring the adult to remember and use computer processed syllable information in auditory working memory, the method comprising the steps of:

providing on the computing device, a plurality of syllables for presentation to the adult;

providing on the computing device, a plurality of processing levels for processing the syllables for presentation;

selecting from the plurality of processing levels, a first processing level to be used to process selected syllables;

selecting from the plurality of syllables, a first plurality of syllables for presentation, both aurally and graphically, on the computing device;

aurally presenting on the computing device the first plurality of syllables according to the first processing level, the first plurality of syllables presented serially;

after said step of aurally presenting, graphically presenting on the computing device the first plurality of syllables;

requiring the adult to select on the computing device the graphically presented syllables corresponding to an order in which they were aurally presented; and

repeating said steps of selecting from the plurality of syllables, aurally presenting, graphically presenting, and requiring;

wherein said step of repeating results in exposing the auditory system of the aging adult to a substantial number of processed syllables thereby improving the adult'"'"'s working memory.

23. The method as recited in claim 22 wherein the syllable information comprises consonant-vowel (CV) phonemes.

24. The method as recited in claim 22 wherein requiring the adult to remember and use the syllable information requires the adult to listen to the aurally presented syllables and recall the order in which the aurally presented syllables occur.

25. The method as recited in claim 22 wherein the plurality of processing levels vary in the amount of time between a consonant portion and a vowel portion of the syllables.

26. The method as recited in claim 22 wherein the plurality of processing levels vary in the amount of stretching, in the time domain, that is applied to a consonant portion of the syllables.

27. The method as recited in claim 22 wherein the plurality of processing levels vary in the amount of emphasis applied to frequency envelopes within a consonant portion of the syllables.

28. A method on a computing device for improving working memory in an aging adult, the method requiring the adult to remember and use computer processed syllable information that is presented to the adult, the method comprising the steps of:

providing on the computing device, a plurality of syllables for presentation to the adult;

providing on the computing device, a plurality of processing levels for processing the syllables for presentation;

selecting from the plurality of processing levels, a first processing level to be used to process selected syllables;

selecting two syllables from the plurality of syllables, the two syllables for presentation, both aurally and graphically, on the computing device;

aurally presenting on the computing device the two syllables according to the first processing level, the two syllables presented serially;

after said step of aurally presenting, graphically presenting on the computing device the two syllables;

requiring the adult to select on the computing device the graphically presented syllables corresponding to an order in which they were aurally presented;

if the adult correctly selects the graphically presented syllables corresponding to the order in which they were aurally presented, increasing the number of syllables selected from the plurality of syllables, and repeating said steps of aurally presenting, graphically presenting, and requiring; and

if the adult incorrectly selects the graphically presented syllables corresponding to the order in which they were aurally presented, decreasing the number of syllables selected from the plurality of syllables, and repeating said steps of aurally presenting, graphically presenting, and requiring.

29. A method for improving the working memory in an aging adult, the method presented on a computing device, the method comprising the steps of:

aurally presenting on the computing device two consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) syllables, the syllables processed to separate the consonant portions and the vowel portion of the syllables by a predetermined time period, the syllables presented one after the other;

graphically presenting on the computing device, the two aurally presented syllables, the graphically presented syllables selectable by the adult;

requiring the adult to select the graphically presented syllables in the order in which they were aurally presented;

if the adult correctly selects the graphically presented syllables in the order in which they were aurally presented, increasing the number of syllables presented to the adult, and repeating said steps of aurally presenting, graphically presenting, and requiring;

wherein the working memory of the aging adult is improved by repeating said steps of aurally presenting thru repeating.

30. The method as recited in claim 29 further comprising:

if the adult correctly selects the graphically presented syllables in the order in which they were aurally presented, decreasing the predetermined time period which separates the consonant portions and the vowel portion of the syllables, and repeating said steps of aurally presenting, graphically presenting, and requiring.
