Abstract

An interactive wide area computer network system and method for accessing and transmitting data using a printed page optical code. The code includes a system configuration mode identifier which configures the system to perform specified functions and allow the user certain interactive options. Based of the configuration mode and the user'"'"'s selected option, the system generates and executes the necessary queries, commands, and responses to be routed upon the network. In an embodiment, a two dimensional optical code (“2DOC” or “barcode”) is printed on a magazine page advertisement containing information such as internet web addresses, product identity, advertisement identity, location, page number, magazine issue number, and geographic routing numbers. The system extracts this information using an optical code reader and combines it with user input parameters to generate network commands which access webpages, and/or transmit and receive relevant data via a users computer connected to the internet and running an internet browser. The user may select an option wherein the system performs unique tasks depending on the advertisement.

Claims

1. A method for accessing data on a computer network comprises:

selecting an available user selectable read option;

capturing a code on printed media with a code reader, wherein said code comprises a plurality of informational units include a configuration mode identifier;

decoding said code to extract said plurality of informational units;

configuring a computer connected to said network into a configuration mode, according to said identifier; and

generating a command from a subset of said informational units based on said configuration mode.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein said capturing comprises calculating an orientation between said code reader and said code.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein said orientation comprises a rotation angle.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein said capturing further comprises utilizing said rotation angle as a user input parameter.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein said printed media comprises a rotation guide associated with said code.

6. The method of claim 1, which further comprises updating a list of configuration modes upon capturing an unidentifiable identifier.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein said plurality of informational units comprises a destination URL and a printed page identification string.

8. The method of claim 1, which further comprises automatically contacting the publisher of said printed media.

9. The method of claim 1, which further comprises automatically contacting an advertiser associated with said printed media.

10. A method for tracking advertising effectiveness which comprises:

providing a printed page advertisement published by a publisher and advertising a product or service of an advertiser, wherein said advertisement has a code, wherein said code comprises;

information identifying said advertisement;

information identifying a first website associated with said product or service; and

information identifying said publisher;

capturing said code by a user;

linking said user to said first website; and

reporting said information identifying said publisher to said advertiser.

11. The method of claim 10, which further comprises:

reporting said linking to said publisher.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein said method further comprises:

tracking whether said link results in enhanced exposure to said website.

13. The method of claim 10, which further comprises:

providing a dynamic reciprocal linked advertisement on said first website.

14. The method of claim 10, which further comprises providing a commission from said advertiser to said publisher.

15. A symbology code for accessing an internet website, said code comprising:

a plurality of informational units associated with said website; and

,

an identifier for identifying a configuration mode;

said wherein said mode utilizes a subset of said units according to user selected options on a code reading system.

16. A system for facilitating the tracking of printed page advertisement effectiveness comprises:

a symbology code comprising;

a plurality of informational units associated with said website; and

,

an identifier for identifying a configuration mode;

said wherein said mode utilizes a subset of said units according to user selected options on a code reading system;

a reader for reading said code;

means for decoding said code to form a plurality of informational units and a configuration identifier.

17. A symbology code comprising:

a plurality of informational units including a configuration mode identifier for a configuration mode of a remote computer capable of reading said code.
