Abstract

An adjustable tibial trial insert includes an upper plate having an upper articular surface and a lower plate. A height-adjustment mechanism of the insert is coupled to and positioned generally between the upper plate and the lower plate and is configured to move between a closed position where the upper and lower plates are adjacent each other and an opened position where the upper and lower plates are spaced-apart from each other in order to adjust a height or thickness of the insert.

Claims

1. An adjustable tibial trial insert for use with a tibial tray comprising:

an upper plate including an upper articular surface,

a lower plate including a lower surface configured to engage a top surface of the tibial tray, and

a height-adjustment mechanism coupled to and positioned generally between the upper plate and the lower plate and configured to move between a closed position where the upper and lower plates are adjacent each other and an opened position where the upper and lower plates are spaced-apart from each other.

2. The adjustable tibial trial insert of claim 1, wherein the height-adjustment mechanism includes drive means coupled to the upper plate and the lower plate and an actuator coupled to the drive means and to one of the upper and lower plates.

3. The adjustable tibial trial insert of claim 2, wherein the actuator includes a lever pivotably coupled to one of the upper plate and the lower plate.

4. The adjustable tibial trial insert of claim 2, wherein the actuator includes a knob and a link pivotably coupled to the drive means and coupled to the knob for rotation with the knob.

5. The adjustable tibial trial insert of claim 2, wherein the drive means includes a first linkage pivotably coupled to the upper plate and the lower plate and a second linkage pivotably coupled to the upper plate and the lower plate.

The adjustable tibial trial insert of claim 2, wherein the upper plate includes a lower angled surface, the lower plate includes an upper angled surface, and the drive means includes a wedge having a first angled surface slidingly engaged with the upper angled surface and a second angled surface slidingly engaged with the lower angled surface.

The adjustable tibial trial insert of claim 2, wherein the drive means includes a first crossbar coupled to the actuator, pivotably coupled to the upper plate, and pivotably coupled to the lower plate and a second crossbar pivotably coupled to the upper plate and pivotably coupled to the lower plate.

The adjustable tibial trial insert of claim 7, wherein the upper plate includes an upper channel and the lower plate includes a lower channel and the first crossbar is received within the upper channel for sliding movement within the upper channel and the second crossbar is received within the lower channel for sliding movement within the lower channel.

The adjustable tibial trial insert of claim 7, wherein the drive means further includes a third crossbar pivotably coupled to the upper plate, pivotably coupled to the lower plate, and spaced-apart from and generally parallel to the first crossbar such that the second crossbar is positioned between the first and third crossbars.

The adjustable tibial insert trial of claim 1, wherein the height-adjustment mechanism includes a height-adjustment lever pivotably coupled to one of the upper plate and the lower plate at a pivot point and a tie-rod coupled to the height-adjustment lever at a distance spaced-apart from the pivot point of the height-adjustment lever such that pivoting movement of the height-adjustment lever about the pivot point moves the tie-rod in a generally lateral direction.

The adjustable tibial insert trial of claim 10, wherein the height-adjustment mechanism further includes a first crossbar having a first end pivotably coupled to the upper plate and a second end coupled to the tie-rod and pivotably and slidably coupled to the lower plate and a second crossbar having a first end pivotably and slidably coupled to the upper plate and a second end pivotably coupled to the lower plate.

The adjustable tibial trial insert of claim 10, wherein the lower plate includes a cavity formed in an upper surface of the lower plate to receive a portion of the height-adjustment mechanism and a slot formed in a front surface of the lower plate in communication with the cavity, and wherein the height-adjustment lever is received through the slot.

13. The adjustable tibial trial insert of claim 12, wherein the slot is calibrated to indicate a height of the adjustable tibial trial insert.

14. The adjustable tibial trial insert of claim 12, wherein the slot includes a plurality of detents formed to receive the height-adjustment lever to lock the height-adjustment lever in a particular position.

15. The adjustable tibial trial insert of claim 1, wherein one of the upper and lower plates includes a calibrated scale to visually indicate a height of the adjustable tibial trial insert.

16. The adjustable tibial trial insert of claim 1, wherein at least one of the upper plate and the lower plate include a cavity and at least a portion of the height-adjustment mechanism is positioned within the cavity.

17. An adjustable tibial trial insert comprising:

an upper plate including an upper articular surface,

a lower plate,

a height-adjustment mechanism including (i) drive means coupled to the upper plate and the lower plate for moving the upper plate and the lower plate away from each other, (ii) a tie-rod pivotably coupled to the drive means, and (iii) an actuator pivotably coupled at a first pivot point to one of the upper plate and the lower plate and pivotably coupled to the tie-rod at a second pivot point spaced-apart from the first pivot point.

18. The adjustable tibial trial insert of claim 17, wherein the drive means of the height-adjustment mechanism includes a linkage pivotably coupled to the upper plate and the lower plate.

19. The adjustable tibial trial insert of claim 18, wherein the linkage includes a first link coupled to the upper plate and the tie rod and a second link coupled to the lower plate, the tie rod, and the upper link.

20. The adjustable tibial trial insert of claim 17, wherein the drive means of the height-adjustment mechanism includes a wedge having a first angled surface engaged with the upper plate and a second angled surface engaged with the lower plate.

21. The adjustable tibial trial insert of claim 20, wherein the upper plate includes an angled surface engaged with the first angled surface of the wedge and the lower plate includes an angled surface engaged with the second angled surface of the wedge.

22. The adjustable tibial trial insert of claim 17, wherein the drive means of the height-adjustment mechanism includes a crossbar coupled at a first end to the upper plate and at a second end to the lower plate and the tie-rod is coupled to one of the first end and the second end of the crossbar.

23. The adjustable tibial trial insert of claim 22, wherein one of the upper plate and the lower plate includes a channel and one of the first end and the second end of the crossbar is received within the channel for pivoting and sliding movement relative to the upper and lower plates.

24. The adjustable tibial trial insert of claim 22, wherein the drive means further includes a second crossbar coupled at a first end to the upper plate and at a second end to the lower plate.

25. An adjustable tibial trial insert comprising:

an upper plate including an upper articular surface,

a lower plate, and

a non-threaded height-adjustment mechanism including (i) drive means coupled to the upper plate and the lower plate and movable between a closed position and an opened position to adjust a height of the insert, and (ii) an actuator coupled the drive means and to one of the upper and lower plates to move the drive means between the closed and opened positions.

26. The adjustable tibial trial insert of claim 25, wherein the upper plate includes a first cavity formed in a lower surface of the upper plate, the lower plate includes a second cavity formed in an upper surface of the lower plate, and at least a portion of the non-threaded height-adjustment mechanism is received within the first and second cavities.

27. The adjustable tibial trial insert of claim 25, wherein one of the upper plate and the lower plate includes a calibrated slot to visually indicate the height of the insert and the actuator is received within with the calibrated slot.
