Abstract

This invention relates to an occlusion device for the closure of physical defects. The occlusion device is capable of self-centering itself in the defect. This allows the center of the occluder to remain properly positioned in the defect, while maintaining a low profile against the tissue.

Claims

1. An occlusion device for occluding a defect, the occlusion device comprising a frame for centering the device in the defect, the frame comprising:

first contact locations for contacting tissue on a first side of the defect;

second contact locations for contacting tissue on a second side of the defect; and

centering arcs extending from the first contact locations to the second contact locations.

2. The occlusion device of claim 1 and further comprising first and second center posts located on the frame.

3. The occlusion device of claim 1 wherein the frame comprises a plurality of arms, each arm having one of the first contact locations for contacting tissue on a first side of the defect, one of the second contact location for contacting tissue on a second side of the defect, and one of the centering arc extending from the first contact location to the second contact location.

4. The occlusion device of claim 3 wherein each arm further includes a first radially extending portion connected to the first contact location and a second radially extending portion connected to the second contact location.

5. The occlusion device of claim 1 wherein the frame is formed of stranded wire.

6. The occlusion device of claim 1 wherein the frame is formed of a single wire.

7. The occlusion device of claim 1 and further comprising a first sheet attached to the frame for occluding the first side of the defect;

and a second sheet attached to a second side of the frame for occluding the second side of the defect.

8. A self-centering occluding device for occluding an aperture, the self-centering occluding device comprising:

a wire frame comprising a plurality of wire arms, wherein each arm comprises;

a first contact location for contacting tissue on a first side of the aperture;

a second contact location for contacting tissue on a second side of the aperture; and

a centering arc extending between the first and second contact locations; and

sheets affixed to the wire frame.

The self-centering occlusion device of claim 8 wherein the wire frame further comprises an outer diameter, wherein the outer diameter is defined by a portion of the frame which contacts tissue around the defect, and an inner diameter, wherein the inner diameter is defined by a portion of the frame which centers the wire frame in the aperture.

10. The self-centering occlusion device of claim 9 wherein the inner diameter is further defined by the centering arcs which extend from the first contact locations to the second contact locations such that the arcs pass through the aperture.

11. The self-centering occlusion device of claim 8 and further comprising a grasping post located on the wire frame.

12. The self-centering occlusion device of claim 8 wherein each arm further includes a first radially extending portion connected to the first contact location and a second radially extending portion connected to the second contact location.

13. The self-centering occlusion device of claim 8 wherein the wire frame is formed of stranded wire.

14. The self-centering occlusion device of claim 8 wherein the wire frame is formed of a single wire.

15. The self-centering occlusion device of claim 8 wherein the sheets comprise polyvinyl alcohol foam.

16. An occlusion device for occluding an aperture in the body, the occlusion device comprising:

a first post;

a second post;

a plurality of arms connected to the first and second posts, wherein each arm comprises;

a first contact location for contacting tissue on a first side of the aperture;

a second contact location for contacting tissue on a second side of the aperture; and

an arc between the first and second contact locations.

17. The occlusion device of claim 16 wherein each arm further includes a first radial portion extending between the first post and the first contact location, and a second radial portion extending between the second post and the second contact location.

18. The occlusion device of claim 17 wherein the contact locations extend in a generally circumferential direction.

19. The occlusion device of claim 16 wherein the arc is positioned to extend from a first side of the aperture through the aperture to a second side of the aperture.

20. The occlusion device of claim 16 wherein the plurality of arms comprises six arms.

21. The occlusion device of claim 20 wherein the six arms are formed of three wires.

22. The occlusion device of claim 20 wherein the six arms are formed of a single wire.

23. The occlusion device of claim 16 wherein each arm comprises:

a first radial member connected to the first post;

a first contact length extending generally circumferentially from an outer end of the first radial member to the centering arc to define the first contact location;

a second radial member connected to the second post;

a second contact length extending generally circumferentially from an outer end of the second radial member to the centering arc to define the second contact location.

24. The occlusion device of claim 23 wherein the first radial member and the second radial member are shaped to urge the first and second contact lengths toward each other.

25. The occlusion device of claim 16 and further comprising a first sheet affixed to the first contact location of each arm.

26. The occlusion device of claim 25 and further comprising a second sheet affixed to the second contact location of each arm.

27. A frame for an occlusion device, the frame comprising:

a first side for placement on a first side of a defect;

a second side for placement on a second side of a defect; and

centering arcs connecting the first side of the frame to the second side of the frame, wherein the centering arcs are flexible and shaped to center the frame in the defect.

28. The frame of claim 27 wherein the centering arcs are shaped to span across the defect to be occluded.

29. The frame of claim 27 and further comprising a first post located on the first side of the frame.

30. The frame of claim 29 and further comprising a second post located on the second side of the frame.
