Abstract

A telemetry system enabling radio frequency (RF) communications between an implantable medical device and an external device, or programmer, in which the RF circuitry is normally maintained in a powered down state in order to conserve power. At synchronized wakeup intervals, one of the devices designated as a master device powers up its RF transmitter to request a communications session, and the other device designated as a slave device powers up its RF transmitter to listen for the request. Telemetry is conducted using a far field or near field communication link.

Claims

1. A telemetry system, comprising:

an implantable device and an external device, each having an RF transmitter and receiver and a wakeup timer;

wherein one of the implantable or external devices is configured to operate as a master device while the other device is configured to operate as a slave device;

wherein the master device is programmed to power up its RF transmitter and receiver for a specified master time window and to transmit a digital key to the slave device at wakeup intervals defined by the wakeup timer and listen for a response;

wherein slave device is programmed to power up its RF receiver for a specified slave time window to listen for a digital key transmitted by the master device at wakeup intervals defined by the wakeup timer and to power up its RF transmitter to transmit a response to the master device if the digital key is received; and

,

wherein the master and slave devices are programmed such that a communications session is established between the master and slave devices when a response is received by the master device.

The system of claim 1 wherein the programming of the external and implantable devices is such that the wakeup timers of the external and implantable devices are synchronized during a communications session by one device transmitting a timestamp to the other device and wherein the device receiving the timestamp adjusts its wakeup timer accordingly.

The system of claim 2 wherein the programming of the external and implantable devices is such that the device receiving the timestamp adjusts its wakeup timer to compensate for an amount of timer drift that occurred since a previous communications session by setting the wakeup timer ahead or behind the wakeup timer of the other device.

The system of claim 1 wherein the programming of the external and implantable devices is such that the wakeup timers of the external and implantable devices are synchronized during a communications session by one device adjusting its wakeup timer so that the wakeup interval is aligned with the start of a message.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein the programming of the external and implantable devices is such that the wakeup interval for each of the external and implantable devices is set to a specified value during a communications session.

6. The system of claim 1 further comprising an inductive link for transmission of a magnetic pulse to the implantable device and wherein the implantable device is programmed to set its wakeup timer to a predetermined value upon receipt of the magnetic pulse.

The system of claim 1 further comprising an inductively coupled telemetry system that includes a transmitter/receiver in each of the external device and implantable devices that is not duty cycled and wherein the wakeup timers of each device may be synchronized during a communications session established with the inductively coupled telemetry system.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein the programming of the external and implantable devices is such that the master time window begins before the slave time window starts.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein the programming of the external and implantable devices is such that the master time window ends after the slave time window.

10. The system of claim 1 wherein the programming of the external and implantable devices is such that the master time window is widened in accordance with the amount of time since the last communications session.

11. The system of claim 1 wherein the programming of the external and implantable devices is such that the slave time window is adjusted in accordance with an amount of timer drift that occurred since a previous communications session.

12. The system of claim 1 wherein the programming of the external and implantable devices is such that the wakeup time intervals for each device are shortened during a communications session if a low battery condition has been detected.

13. The system of claim 1 wherein the programming of the external and implantable devices is such that the digital key is uniquely specified for a particular implantable device.

14. The system of claim 1 wherein the programming of the external and implantable devices is such that the implantable device transmits a response to a digital key after a pseudo-random time delay.

15. The system of claim 1 wherein, if the master device has not successfully established a communications session with a particular slave device after a specified maximum time, the master device is programmed to begin a non-synchronized receiver search by continuously transmitting its digital key and listening for a response until either a communications session is established or a programmable maximum non-synchronized search interval has passed.

16. A telemetry system, comprising:

an implantable device and an external device, each having an RF transmitter and receiver

a wakeup timer incorporated into the implantable device

wherein the external device is programmed to power up its transmitter and receiver for a specified master time window and to transmit a digital key to the implantable device and listen for a response;

wherein implantable device is programmed to power up its receiver for a specified slave time window to listen for a digital key transmitted by the external device at wakeup intervals defined by the wakeup timer and to power up its transmitter to transmit a response to the external device if the digital key is received; and

,

wherein the external and implantable devices are programmed such that a communications session is established between the devices when a response is received by the external device and further wherein the implantable device is programmed to power down its transmitter and receiver after the communications session is finished.

17. The system of claim 16 further comprising an inductive link for transmission of a magnetic pulse to the implantable device and wherein the implantable device is programmed to set its wakeup timer to a predetermined value upon receipt of the magnetic pulse.

The system of claim 16 wherein the programming of the implantable device is such that the wakeup timer is synchronized during a communications session by the external device transmitting a timestamp to the implantable device and wherein the implantable device adjusts its wakeup timer accordingly.

19. The system of claim 16 wherein the programming of the implantable device is such that the implantable device transmits a response to a digital key after a pseudo-random time delay.

20. The system of claim 16 wherein the programming of the external and implantable devices is such that the digital key is uniquely specified for a particular implantable device.
