Abstract

A method, system and apparatus for processing colloquialisms in message text. A method of processing colloquialisms in message text can include detecting a colloquialism in message text, locating a universal form for the detected colloquialism, and transmitting the message text with the universal form to a designated message recipient. The transmitting step can include replacing the colloquialism with the universal form, and transmitting the message text with the universal form to a designated message recipient. Alternatively, the transmitting step can include supplementing the colloquialism with the universal form, and transmitting the message text with the universal form to a designated message recipient.

Claims

1. A method of processing colloquialisms in message text, the method comprising the steps of:

detecting a colloquialism in message text;

locating a universal form for said detected colloquialism; and

,

transmitting said message text with said universal form to a designated message recipient.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein said transmitting step comprises the steps of:

replacing said colloquialism with said universal form; and

,

transmitting said message text with said universal form to a designated message recipient.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein said transmitting step comprises the steps of:

supplementing said colloquialism with said universal form; and

,

transmitting said message text with said universal form to a designated message recipient.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein said supplementing step comprises the steps of:

visually marking said colloquialism in said message; and

,

associating said marked colloquialism with said universal form so that said universal form is displayed when said marked colloquialism is selected by said designated message recipient.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein said transmitting step comprises the steps of:

formatting said message with said universal form using a common message formatting schema; and

,

transmitting said formatted message to a designated message recipient.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein said transmitting step comprises the steps of:

formatting said message with said universal form as an instant message; and

,

transmitting said instant message to a designated message recipient.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein said transmitting step comprises the steps of:

formatting said message with said universal form as an electronic mail message; and

,

transmitting said electronic mail to a designated message recipient.

8. A system for processing colloquialisms in message text, the system comprising:

a colloquialism database; and

,

a colloquialism processor configured for coupling to said colloquialism database and to a messaging client.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein said colloquialism processor comprises logic programmed to detect a colloquialism in message text and to locate a universal form for said detected colloquialism in said colloquialism database.

10. The system of claim 8, wherein said messaging client is an instant messenger client.

11. The system of claim 8, wherein said messaging client is an electronic mail client.

12. The system of claim 8, further comprising a common schema for formatting messages processed by said colloquialism processor.

13. A machine readable storage having stored thereon a computer program for processing colloquialisms in message text, the computer program comprising a routine set of instructions which when executed by a machine causes the machine to perform the steps of:

detecting a colloquialism in message text;

locating a universal form for said detected colloquialism; and

,

transmitting said message text with said universal form to a designated message recipient.

14. The machine readable storage of claim 13, wherein said transmitting step comprises the steps of:

replacing said colloquialism with said universal form; and

,

transmitting said message text with said universal form to a designated message recipient.

15. The machine readable storage of claim 13, wherein said transmitting step comprises the steps of:

supplementing said colloquialism with said universal form; and

,

transmitting said message text with said universal form to a designated message recipient.

16. The machine readable storage of claim 15, wherein said supplementing step comprises the steps of:

visually marking said colloquialism in said message; and

,

associating said marked colloquialism with said universal form so that said universal form is displayed when said marked colloquialism is selected by said designated message recipient.

17. The machine readable storage of claim 13, wherein said transmitting step comprises the steps of:

formatting said message with said universal form using a common message formatting schema; and

,

transmitting said formatted message to a designated message recipient.

18. The machine readable storage of claim 13, wherein said transmitting step comprises the steps of:

formatting said message with said universal form as an instant message; and

,

transmitting said instant message to a designated message recipient.

19. The machine readable storage of claim 13, wherein said transmitting step comprises the steps of:

formatting said message with said universal form as an electronic mail message; and

,

transmitting said electronic mail to a designated message recipient.
