Abstract

The method and system of the invention provide a variety of techniques for using a selected alias and a selected personal identification entry (PIE) in conjunction with use of a transaction card, such as a credit card, debit card or stored value card, for example. A suitable number or other identification parameter is selected by the account-holder as an alias. The account-holder is then required to choose a PIE for security purposes. The alias is linked to the account-holder'"'"'s credit card number via a database. When the account-holder enters into a transaction with a merchant, the physical card need not be present. The account-holder simply provides his or her alias and then the PIE. This can be done at any point of sale such as a store, catalog telephone order, or over the Internet. The alias and PIE are entered and authorization is returned from the credit card company.

44. A method for facilitating the request of financial services, said method including:

receiving transaction request information from a cardholder via a remote terminal, wherein said request includes a PIN associated with a financial service in addition to account authorization;

processing said transaction request information and PIN to determine a desired financial service.

45. The method of claim 44 further including activating said desired financial service.

46. The method of claim 44 further including:

receiving transaction request information from a cardholder via a remote terminal, wherein said request comprises a cardholder alias number and an account identification number; and

processing said alias number and said account identification number to determine which cardholder transaction account is associated therewith.

47. The method of claim 44 wherein said step of processing said transaction request information and PIN to determine a desired financial service includes a financial service which activates a limitation on an account.

48. The method of claim 44 wherein said step of processing said transaction request information and PIN to determine a desired financial service includes a financial service which activates a limitation on an account, wherein said limitation includes at least one of:

selecting a particular account for any portion of the transaction, dividing the payment among various accounts, PIN expiration, payment instructions, notification instructions, security notifications, specific merchant rules, merchant category rules, geographic rules, expenditure rules or limits, time or transaction limitations, authorized transactions, authorized goods or services, authorized vendors, stores, and service providers, transaction amount limitation, daily spending limit, authorized geographical area of usage, authorized time of usage, authorized transaction limit for an account, transaction card or automated teller machine account, authorized individual for transacting on an account, one or more banks or financial institutions authorized for the transaction, a limitation of a fee charge on an account, authorized transaction location, and authorized number of transactions.

49. The method of claim 44 wherein said step of processing said transaction request information and PIN to determine a desired financial service further includes supplementing pre-existing limitations on an account with the desired financial service.

50. The method of claim 44 wherein said step of receiving transaction request information from a cardholder via a remote terminal, wherein said request includes a PIN further includes said PIN including at least one of a cardholder identification, biometric, and merchant code.

51. A method for processing a request of financial services, said method including:

receiving transaction request information from a cardholder via a remote terminal, wherein said request includes a PIN associated with a financial service in addition to account authorization;

processing said transaction request information and PIN to determine a desired financial service.

52. The method of claim 51 further including activating said desired financial service.

53. The method of claim 51 further including:

receiving transaction request information from a cardholder via a remote terminal, wherein said request comprises a cardholder alias number and an account identification number; and

processing said alias number and said account identification number to determine which cardholder transaction account is associated therewith.

54. The method of claim 51 wherein said step of processing said transaction request information and PIN to determine a desired financial service includes a financial service which activates a limitation on an account.

55. The method of claim 51 wherein said step of processing said transaction request information and PIN to determine a desired financial service includes a financial service which activates a limitation on an account, wherein said limitation includes at least one of:

selecting a particular account for any portion of the transaction, dividing the payment among various accounts, PIN expiration, payment instructions, notification instructions, security notifications, specific merchant rules, specific situation rules, geographic rules, expenditure rules or limits, time or transaction limitations, authorized transactions, authorized goods or services, authorized vendors, stores, and service providers, transaction amount limitation, daily spending limit, authorized geographical area of usage, authorized time of usage, authorized transaction limit for an account, transaction card or automated teller machine account, authorized individual for transacting on an account, one or more banks or financial institutions authorized for the transaction, a limitation of a fee charge on an account, authorized transaction location, and authorized number of transactions.

56. The method of claim 51 wherein said step of processing said transaction request information and PIN to determine a desired financial service further includes supplementing pre-existing limitations on an account with the desired financial service.

57. The method of claim 51 wherein said step of receiving transaction request information from a cardholder via a remote terminal, wherein said request includes a PIN further includes said PIN including at least one of a cardholder identification, biometric, and merchant code.
